USA Today Transformers Question

In a USA Today article, Summer Preview Q&A, Michael Bay comments on fans and why Bumblebee is a Camaro rather then a Beetle.

10: Will Transformers fans be won over July 4 by the movie's changes to the 1980s toys?
The shape-shifting alien robots disguise themselves as Earth vehicles, but certain characters have a different appearance in director Michael Bay's movie.

Die-hard fans have griped that the Bumblebee character is now a Chevy Camaro instead of a Volkswagen Beetle, while others are incensed at things as subtle as painted flames added to robot leader Optimus Prime.

"They're gonna (complain) about everything, you know what I'm saying? Then you'll see them accept it," Bay says. "The things that really matter are there." Internet chat that Volkswagen didn't want the Beetle involved in an action movie are false, Bay says: "I just liked the other car better. I didn't want anything to do with the Bug because it reminded me of Herbie the Love Bug ." —A.B.
You want to attack him for that opinion, but its a true statement. Its what happens when have die-hard fans who are passionate about Transformers and then start to change things. The key is to hear the constructive critisism over the noise. Which occured in some cases such as casting of Peter Cullen and use of Frank Welker.

As for the Volkswagon rumor is a result of the Alternators toyline where supposedly Hasbro approached Volkswagon to release Bumblebee as a current version of the Beetle and they refused on grounds of not wanting to be associated with war toys. Considering the nature of the film, its not a reach to assume the same.

However, we have since learned that at least part of the reason for the change is because of the agreement between Ford GM and the film studio. More then likely to save costs on the probable dozens of cars needed for production, GM provided them for free or at discount in return for the advertising push. By dozens, I mean they don't use just one car but many copies of the same car. Maybe a few for stunts, few to damage, few to drive in, couple to blow up, some to strap to trucks for road filming, and so on. Depending on what is needed, each car has to be rigged a certain way to meet the need and that usually means one car per. Considering the number of cars as central to the movie, that can get quite expensive.

To be honest though, the Camaro looks good, both the '76 and '08 versions. Its almost a car I might purchase. Can't really complain about the choice and its makes sense in this day and age for a male to want to buy such a car. Call it sexist, but in general the modern Beetle just isn't a male car of choice so Sam Witwicky doing that would seen odd to say the least, even odder when it updates to an '08 per the script.

  1. To be honest I think Bay is dead on. I love the G1 Transformers, but this is a chance for the franchise to reach levels it never would have had it not been picked up for this movie. The whole franchise is getting rebooted, new toys, new cartoon, most likely 3 movies. It doesn't make sense NOT to change the Transformers to make them modern.

I bet there would be flocks of people that would see a transforming minivan and go "Man that is SOOO much cooler than a hummer or a topkick" How come the "die hards" never complain that Ironhide isn't an Aerostar in the new movie?

  2. Or that Ratchet isn't a classic van? I agree with you (and Bay) on this. Good analogy on the series getting 'rebooted'.

This is NOT the G1 that we grew up on, but it is BASED on G1 (which you could say that all the series that came out after were....tho, what the Japanese first came out with were pretty detached from them). At least Prime is still a diesel freight truck and not a firetruck.

  3. I agree with most of this here really. I prefer the Camaro, especially since they used an older one at first. X3

Hey, so ya know about S7, check this out:

Ya know the chalk sign that has XXX days without an accident? Well, if ya change the date on yer comp, it changes with it. Neat, huh? Tho I set mah date to July and nuttin happened, but oh well.

  4. I agree with your comment about the film needed an update from the 80's look.
I think you were wrong though, Ford was not the sponser. GM is the sponsor for transformers. Ford refused to sponser so Saleen is the one who provided the Saleen Mustangs. Camaro=Chevy=GM (BB) H2=Hummer=GM. Solstice=Pontiac=GM (Jazz) ect...ect

    GM Sponsored Transformers

  5. Yeah it's GM, not Ford.

perhaps they just got mixed up because they're one of two major American car companies. Just how people will go into a K-mart, and don't know if they're at a K-mart, Wal-mart, or Target... Yes, there are people who do that. You know how many checked K-mart gets that have been made out to Wal-mart?

Well...it's been a while since I worked for K-mart...haha...Target here.

I think Bay is pretty much right here, and that's why I've been pretty much positive about the upcoming movie.

  6. I don't get one thing though. Japanese have made a few series of Transformers these past few years and they made a Optimus really good, close to G1, WITHOUT FLAMES!Yes I can't let that go! I'm not saying that I won't watch the movie or anything but why, was there a good reason for doing that? To look cooler? More Badass? You could watch a few episodes from the transformers Bay...
I wonder whom he will pass the Autobot Matrix ( read: the sequel)next? Or will he keep it?
To tell you the truith I'm used to new models and the fact that toys look a lot better then the movie designs.

  7. I love Transformers as much as the next guy, but the fact of the matter is that when I watch G1 episodes and the original Transformers: Movie, I pretty much end up sitting around nitpicking the continuity errors and massive physics bending that occurs in every scene. Why couldn't they keep the scale correct? Where did all the excess matter go when Megatron and Soundwave transformed? Where did Optimus Prime's trailer go when he transformed, and how did it keep popping out of nowhere?

These kind of inaccuracies just won't work in live action. Things HAVE to be changed and updated. The cartoons we watched as children were great concepts but usually they were just poorly executed 30minute long commercials. To keep things the same would result in a bomb at the box office.

  8. I agree with Tweezy, except that I still love the movie...

(I'll probably get flamed for this)If you've seen Doctor Who, you should know that the T.A.R.D.I.S.'s inside is in another dimension which is why the outside is so small yet the inside is so big... Personally, I love Doctor Who, so I can accept that they 'shift' parts in and out of another dimension for the mass shifting.

As for Prime's trailer? Well, it was a 'base-like' thing...so, it could have a computer that is linked to Prime and when he gets ready to transform, the trailer knows and gets into place....but that could just be over thinking things a bit.
