TF2 The Veiled Threat Plot Summary

Del Rey has updated its website to provide a summary and first chapter of Transformers: The Veiled Threat, a tie-in novel to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Life on earth has changed forever as humans and their courageous robotic allies, the Autobots, must work together to protect the planet from the destructive forces of the evil Decepticons. At the headquarters of NEST (Networked Elements: Supporters and Transformers), tech sergeant Epps and captain Lennox both guard and assist cyberneticist Yoki Ishihara and the brooding Russian AI genius Petr Ivanov as they explore the differences between organics and bots. In the meantime, all around them, alliances fray, distrust grows, suspicions mount, and traitors come out of the shadows.

Optimus Prime, the powerful leader of the Autobots who is also part of NEST, is on the defense as battles flare up from Australia to Zimbabwe. But escalating Decepticon attacks will culminate in a final confrontation from which no one–man or machine–will emerge unscathed.
Based on the description, it appears to covers some of the adventures that the Autobots, Epps and Lennox have as part of the newly formed United Nations related unit called NEST (Networked Elements: Supporters and Transformers) as seen on the Ironhide toy and some vehicles during filming. While not mentioned, it is probably safe to assume this novel takes place somewhere in that two year time frame between the movies. Not so hyper about what NEST stands for but at least now we know. As for whether the story is canon, my perspective is all tie-in stories are canon until a movie, TV series or a better story comes along to contradict it.

You can pre-order the book here and read the first chapter here. Thanks to Katie for the link.

  5. That first chapter was pretty funny. Don't know if I'd actually buy that but sounds like a good one. And I'm hoping there won't be any 'left cheek' stuff in RotF. It's funny but lets not play it out. Yet.

  6. "traitors come out of the shadows."

What does that mean? Some people were joking about Ratchet being a traitor, but damn if this is true, it's going to blow my mind.

  7. that was some horrible writing.

  8. YES! Ironhide is a natural pirate! :D

I think this book looks to be better than the first series of adapted Transformer novels from reading the excerpt. More Autobot involvement now that they've firmly established themselves in the story line, and I've keenly interested in two of the newer characters we haven't heard anything about yet: Yoki Ishihara and Petr Ivanov. Maybe they'll make it to the big screen.

  10. (sorry about the deleted post - it's actually this post following but the paragraphs got mixed around somehow)

Yeah, that writing was definitely a bit on the cornball cliche side, although I'm sure the book itself would be better than the synopsis.

I seriously doubt Ratchet would be a traitor. Sure it's possible but that wouldn't fit with his personality at all. They must be talking about Wheelie or some other bot that hasn't been introduced for the movie(s) yet

Here's what is weird to me - and I'm not trying to pick an argument with anyone: has there ever been any bit of storyline from the cartoon, comics, books, or otherwise (but NOT including the movies) that's contradicted something that was already established? If not, then wouldn't it all be "canon"? If the only mention of the Fallen was from that comic storyline, then that must be the story of the Fallen, right?

It hasn't happened in this particular thread yet, but there was a lot of arguing about the origin of the Fallen and how that would be tied into the movie, but as far as I know, there's only one explanation of him.

I guess my main question is: Why WOULDN'T this book be canon?

  11. The movie universe is one universe, the cartoon universe is a completely separate, unrelated universe, and same goes for all the various comic series' and other cartoon series.

There is NO POINT in trying to figure out a way to tie the movie's Fallen in with the comics, because they are two SEPARATE universes, that have nothing to do with each other.

I hate it when people can't understand that.

  12. I am not much of a book reader. I will read that though. So that is a "do want"

  13. The Veiled Threat... sounds an awful lot like the author took a thesaurus to The Phantom Menace.

  14. The "Ghosts of yesterday"-prequal was pretty neat, so this is definatly a must-have. Ironhide is one tough dude. :)

  15. comment to the Chief,
the g1 cartoon contradicted itself many times alone, the thing was written by numerous writers. in general though some people did try to create continuity, i think it was pretty relaxed due to it being for kids.

each new series is a reboot.

as for the this book, this is hired hand writing, to cash in on the Transformers brand.

  16. -this is kinda boring information, i have a qestion, has the fallen toy bio been revealed yet??????????????-

Afraid it hasnt been revealed yet. Also is this book part of the prequel to the new film or the whole prequel? Also when will we hear news about whether there will be any hint of Unicron or Primus?

    ReplyDelete
  17. i just thought of something what if they was using the pyramide to get the power from the sun to power unicron like awaking him using the sun energy witch basicly kill every body if the sun dies

    ReplyDelete
  18. i hope they will show unicron at the end, moving towards cybertron. that wold be awesome

    ReplyDelete
  19. actually The Veiled Threat was considered for the title of star wars before they settled on phantom menace.

  20. There has been no mention of primus, unicron or superion. Orci said there will be close to 40 bots in the movie but I can only come up with about half of that number. We probably won't see unicron until the 3rd movie.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My guess would be that there is going to be a very strong, unequivocal lead in to a third movie at the end of this one, most likely to do with the Fallen trying to summon or bring back Unicron. In which case Primus will most certainly be involved.

  22. These are the ones we know of as of right now. Must be many more to come unless Orci and Bay are lying about how many bots are in the movie.
    Autobots
Optimus Prime - blue, dark red Peterbilt 379EX
Bumblebee - yellow 2010 Chevy Camaro
    Ratchet - lime yellow 2009 Hummer H3
    Ironhide - black 2007 GMC Topkick C4500
Arcee - pink, purple, or blue custom bike from RetroSBK (which unverified)
Chromia - pink, purple, or blue custom bike from RetroSBK (which unverified)
Sideswipe - 2011 Chevy Corvette Centennial
Jetfire - black SR-71 Blackbird, ex-Decepticon that can combine with Optimus
Skids - green 2010 Chevy Spark (twin to Mudflap)
Mudflap - red 2010 Chevy Trax (twin to Skids)
Jolt - blue 2010 Chevy Volt
Wheelie - blue Toy Size RC Truck
    Springer - V-22 Osprey (rumor)
Breakaway - F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (rumor)

    Decepticons
    The Fallen - Cybertronian jet
    Megatron - Cybertronian tank
    Starscream - gray F-22 Raptor
    Scorponok - metallic scorpion
Barricade - black 2008 Saleen S281 Extreme Mustang
Sideways - dark gray Audi R8
Soundwave - a satellite and Cybertronian jet
    Ravage - raw beast mode
Devastator - merge of below 6 Constructicons

Demolishor - red O&K/Terex RH400 Hydrolic Mining Excavator (torso)
Rampage - yellow Caterpillar 992G Front Loader (right arm)
Long Haul - green Caterpillar 773B Dump Truck (right leg)
Mix Master - silver Mack Cement Mixer (head)
High Tower - yellow Kobelco CK2500 Truss Crane (left arm)
Scrapper - yellow Caterpillar D9L Bulldozer (left leg)

I think that's 28 bots so we're missing some of them. And those aren't even all confirmed. There must be some bots that are in it for a short stint and don't really mean much to the story.

  23. there is also alice the pretender bot, and the robot breaking a cars windscreen (set photo)

  24. Responding to Mcat:
Here`s a few unconfirmed robots which could be in the film:
Elita-1: Black bike (Forms Arcee with 2 others)
Firestar: Red bike (Forms Arcee with 2 others)
    Insecticon: Bug (Seen in trailer)
The Seekers: Jets (Rumored as Starscream`s army)

Then again the amount of robots was revealed in 2008 so Bay might not have been able to include that many because of costs or the writers strike!

  25. -there is also alice the pretender bot, and the robot breaking a cars windscreen (set photo)-

I think that robot on the car windscreen may be alice in her robot form. Either that or another Frenzy like drone!

  26. robot breaking a cars windscreen? what is this photo from? I don't remember seeing it.

  27. Replying to Mcat

    Its okay :)
There`s also a video somewhere but i cant find that. I wonder whether this is Alice`s robot form or is it those army of Frenzy drones we heard of!

    Only 91 days left :)

  30. Don't forget Ravage, and there are 3 bikes.

  31. .. and if you go over the game site:

    http://www.transformersgame.com/

The pic that is apparently of Starscream has an awful lot of blue on it. Maybe it's Thundercracker. They're both similar jets so they would have similar looking bot modes.

  32. dont click on the above. its a dud

  33. Thanks for the warning Counterpunch
    Replying to TheChief at 8:48PM:
Does look similar to Thundercracker although i hope that if Thundercracker is in this film he has a different face to Starscream otherwise they will be hard to recognize except for the color difference.
