Transformers 2 Runtime Locked

Transformers 2 director Michael Bay has informed MTV the runtime of the sequel. “It’s four minutes longer than the last one,” explained Bay, saying that the runtime was locked. The 143 minute time of the first movie + 4 = 147 minutes long movie. “I don’t ever talk (to executives) about run times,” [Bay] grinned. “Studios always ask, ‘What’s the run time?’ And I’m like ‘If you enjoy the movie, do you care?’”

The reason runtime matter to studios is it reflects the number of showings per screening. So a 90 minutes movie might have 7 showings a day to five for a 150 long movie. Over 3000 or so screens that can be a lot of money the studios think they may not get. However, I think its nonsense. A sell out does more for a movie's word of mouth (an excited, full audience raises any viewing) then a half empty theatre will any day of the week. Besides, if someone wants to see the movie, less show times during the day isn't going to stop them, especially with all the screens the movie will likely appear on (my guess, 3.5k). Thanks to Mcat for the link.

  6. This should be pretty crazy considering they don't even have to go through all of the exposition like the first film. I'm excited...

  7. Two important notes:

    1) longer run-time equals more robot battles, trust me, not dumb dialogue. he won't waste time on that this time. there will be a little but deal with it. it's not that bad.

    2) bay saying he doesn't listen to executives! he does it his way or doesn't do it at all for better or for worse. for transfans it's better!

  10. Should have been atleast 2 Hours and 45 Minutes.

Gives an extra lot of minutes as the real time of 2 Hours and 27 Minutes could just have the extra four minutes made up of credits or a recap of the first film or the introduction.

Seriously although a longer runtime is better the slowmo scenes with Demolisher/Scavenger crashing through the bridge will wast most of that. I had really been hoping for a 3 hour film :( Hopefully we will get the third film as an 3 Hour film :)

  11. This is epic awesome!! Scorpio,I don't think there will be an introduction of the first film. The slowmo scene with Demolisher/Scavenger doesn't take 4 minutes.
We don't have the intro of Sam,buying Bumblebee at Bobby D's nor his grandpa discovering Megs. That's some runtime right there.
Anyway,I think Bay used runtime wisely.

  12. The run time serves us well

  13. Anon 7:05 MP is right. This time we get to jump right into the middle of the TF Universe. Look how long it took having to get introduced to Sam and others at the begining of the first one.

Sure there will be the "who is the Fallen", but that shouldn't be as long as "Who is Sam", "Who is the Transformers", "Who is Section 7", What is the All Spark", "Who is Bernie Mac" (RIP), that all happened in the first film.

As long as they jump right into the middle of the action, all is good.

  14. -Scorpio,I don't think there will be an introduction of the first film-

They will have to introduce the concept of the Fallen about 5 minutes of a flashback sequence where we see the fallen then we skip to modern day and find out that there are more decepticons. They will also need to explain why Arcee is a female as Bay said one of the reasons they couldnt introduce her first time was because they hadnt enough time to introduce a female robot and explain why she is female. Also either in this film or the next they need to explain who made the Allspark. Also there will be a scene showing Megatron coming out of the ocean which means that they may need to explain it via a flashback.

Scorpio, are you seriously itemizing everying? And about the 4 minutes in credits ... that will still be related to the first film. If they counted credits as part of runtime, then they will count it here also. Matters none because the credits are most likely the same. So EVEN if you factor the credits for BOTH movies, it is still 4 minutes of extra movie time no matter how you cut it because credit times will be the same.

Scorpio, also, are you saying the extra 4 minutes are moot because they are going to include a slowmo, flashbacks, or backstory?? EVERY movie includes this ... it is called character development. The extra 4 minutes is enough time for an extra battle scene or a couple of flashbacks that they would not have been able to do if it wasn't an extra 4 minutes. It is a good thing .. you whine like a baby too much.

  19. New Theory for 3rd film.

After Primus had imprisoned his and Unicron's astral forms in asteroids, he reshaped his new body into the planet Cybertron. From the material of this world was born the first Transformer, Prima. 12 others quickly followed, but Prima specifically was granted a font of Primus' lifeforce and power, the Creation Matrix.(Allspark)

Since Optimus was supposed to be given his title by Sentinal Prime, Maybe we can have optimus learn that Sentinal Prime was not just a famous Cybertronian scientist but also one of the First 13. He thens learns that the First 13 were basically nerds except for Vector Prime and The Fallen. Except when The Fallen got too big for his britches Vector Prime asked the council to help put him away, wich they did.
This can be retooled and reworked.

  20. A popcorn flick for 3 hours do you guys know nothing about films. When you make a pop corn flick you generally aim to stop at 2hours runtime. Transformers is already to long but lucky for it its so fast paced you don't notice it. But a 3 hour film will just piss of your studio limit the amount of showtimes turn off a lot of people with shorter attention spans than you. 2:27 is fine I was hoping it'd be shorted than the first but hey this isn't bad.

  21. That's what I'd LIKE to see happen, but the info coming out from the comic indicates that the Fallen was trapped by "his brothers" (the 13?) when they all put themselves in the sarcophogi. They're already starting to stray pretty far from the story we know in order to bring the Allspark into it. It almost comes off as the Allspark being an evil device - used to create metallic worlds full of life and then having to essentially destroy a sun (and thus all the planets surrounding it) to recharge itself.

Also, I have a feeling that there's going to be a BIG flashback sequence to introduce the Fallen, the civil war, and even Megatron's "fall to evil", etc. Maybe even bringing in the concept of Primus and Unicron. I'd say between 5 and 10 minutes - maybe not in the beginning, and maybe not even all at once.

  23. Good idea Essex heres another version to link it with the Fallens version in this film. However i must warn you that it does not fit in with original transformers History as it is a new film plot.

Before time began there was the cube. It is not known who built it or when but after its creation the god who created it hid the Allspark on an unihabited world. Over the years the Allsparks energys reacted with that world to transform into the first robot planet. Because the original god believed the universe needed both a strong god aswell as a wise god he split the planet into two creating Unicron and his twin Primus. For a while the two lived in harmony. They even created life on one of the planets they found. Prima the original transformer was granted life by the energies of the Allspark. Unicron needed life force of planets to feed so Primus created more robots using the Allspark to find uninhabited or derelict planets to devour.

The Fallen was one of these robots. However he had a better idea. He joined forces with Unicron. Unicron quietly stole the Allspark and the Fallen used it to strip life from planets in order to make them acceptable for Unicron to eat.

Primus knew of this evilness. He managed to trick Unicron and seal him in his planet form and forced him into a parralell dimension. The Fallen escaped to earth and using the energies he had absorbed from the Allspark used its powers to create a portal to hide in so the rest of the thirteen didnt find him.

He enslaved a planet (Earth) and forced his new minions to build this portal and a refueling station for the Allsparks energies so he could one day rise up take revenge and allow his master to return.

Afterwards the rest of the twelve scattered searching for the Fallen. Vector Prime was one of those sent to search for the Fallen. Knowing that Unicron would eventually return Primus created life on the planet known there after as Cybertron and left Prima to rule over the new life forms. However once again not all of them were Autobots.

In the years of the early Decepticon wars a rogue Decepticon kills Prima and as he dies he passes on the Matrix to Sentinel prime. Sentinel vows to take revenge on the Decepticons for killing Prima and makes a group that search out for new leaders who can be Matrix bearers. Thus the name Prime is made as a remberance to the original bearer Prima.

Primus put Prima`s life force into the centre of Cybertron creating Vector Sigma. The Matrix was passed down for generations and is said to contain the essence of Primus as it was made by Primus using the Allspark. Optimus got the Matrix when he helped a dying Autobot in the great wars.

Only the Allspark or the Matrix can be used to bring Unicron back to this dimension.

P.s. This is my fan Plot!

  24. -It is a good thing .. you whine like a baby too much.-

No point bieng rude i am simply stating that most of this will be charecter development and probably a longer flashback scene on Megatron (To Explain his involvement with the Fallen) and Optimus prime (To Explain how he got the Matrix) I am thrilled that this film is longer its just i dont think four minutes will make that much difference.

  29. Forgot to mention earlier about that never ending backyard scene in TF1, that was a waste of time... Just ran on for too long...

And why do you need to explain about Female Transformers? Did you need to explain about Males?

All that needs to be done is Megan Fox saying "I didn't know they make female transformers?" and Arcee replying "I get that alot"... Done..., I just saved 10 minutes time for the movie.

  30. I like the way you think Kasumi except I liked the backyard scene it got good reception from most of the theaters I saw the movie in. What was pointless was the sector 7 stuff it wasn't pointless actually just ran on too long.

  35. Hyper excited here.

I, for one, appreciate Scorp's comments and info and I thought that was a pretty good bit of potential plot.

Half the fun in anticipating a movie like this is the speculation of what might happen. And I think a good amount of the regulars on here agree. So if you're not into it, then don't read the comments. Simple as that.
