Harry Potter 6 Fails to Beat Transformers 2 in States

Despite a huge advertising blitz, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince failed to catch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in first five nor first weekend of release in the US based on early estimates. HP6 weekend is first weekend is looking to be around $79 million bringing its five day total to $159 million. Transformers 2 first weekend was $108.9 million, five day was near record breaking $200.1 million.

Having said that, the numbers are not in for the international gross which is important as the film is likely to do very well overseas. Where TF2's totals are split evenly between US and international sales, the Harry Potter series traditionally does 3 times as well overseas. That proportion resulted in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to earn a worldwide gross of $938.2 million, 68.9% of that total from overseas sales. If that pattern holds then the five day international totals could be as high as $230 bringing the worldwide gross to $389.7 million, easily surpassing Transformers 2's $366.2 million.

The net result of all this estimated number crunching (assuming they closely match Monday's actuals) is it is pretty much a lock that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will remain the top movie of the year in the States but Harry Potter 6 will be the top movie in worldwide totals and could possibly become only the fifth movie in the world to pass the billion dollar mark (not adjusting for inflation). Just something to keep in mind if planning on any "I told you so" fun with friends.

  1. Having seen both (as I am a fan of both) I can honestly say that HP6 will not in the long run beat ROTF for one main reason. HP fans will probably not go to see it multiple times as it yet again doesn't fully follow the book yet again. Which made it disappointing. ROTF is a fun movie to go see over and over.

  2. Had I not been a reader of the books, I might have enjoyed the movie more. This book happened to be my favorite of all the series and I anticipated the movie to live up to the book, and was disappointed. In addition, I was disappointed in the fact that they didn't spend enough time on why the movie is called THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE. They didn't show how obsessed Harry became with the book, nor did they show how Snape became suspicious of him having the book, or the true identity behind the book. Snape may have been the Half-Blood Prince but the movie didn't reveal why or how, or the fact that the book belonged to his mother 50 years prior, and the fact that Snape is "half-blood" and no one expected that. The movie just very flatly announced at the end that Snape was the Half-Blood Prince, period - the end. My favorite still remains HP3: Prisoner of Azkaban.
Being a great fan I have collected a list of good sites and articles (may be around 200) related to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (movie information, movie schedule, movie reviews, books, games, news, wallpapers and many more). If you are interested take a look at the below link

  3. Harry Potter has gone down hill for me. I don't even care to see this new movie. I didn't care to see the 5th one even though I did and I kept hearing Transformers all loud in the theater beside us, being jealous I hadn't gone to see it a 3rd time instead.

I didn't read the 1st or 2nd books but I loved the movies. Then I read the 3rd book and I loved it and the movie was horrible. Worse even compared to the first two and then they just went downhill from there.

However because RotF was so... ADD I expect people to want to see it twice to catch it all. A long movie that moves too fast, you just end up missing a lot or forgetting certain things by the time it is over.

  4. whomever runs this blog, maybe you can shoot this idea in their direction? not even sure if it can be done?, but why is he unable to have two different edited versions...a pg and pg-13 movie? the money this movie lost from smaller kids not being taken to see it and the things i still hear from parents wishing that some scenes not been in there. just curious...if only though...the monetary increases would be nice

  6. HP6 is rubbish the plot is very silly. Here is the things you might not have seen (Please excuse the adult terms)

Ron has a Boner after eating the love chocolates

Ginny goes to give Harry a blowjob when she does his shoe

A guy can be seen rubbing a girls breasts when Draco heads to the vanishing cabinet after he was hospitalised

Dumbledore is checking out a girl on a billboard

Harry flirts and tries to have sex with a girl.
