TF3 Not in Native IMAX

Over at the MB.com forums, admin Nelson reminded everyone that while Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be in real 3D, it will not be in real IMAX, "There will be a 3D reel but it's not in IMAX format (70mm). IIRC, they did not use Imax cameras this time around."

Now this doesn't mean the movie will not be released to IMAX theatres, it just means that there are no scenes specifically shot for IMAX's 70mm format (I believe standard movies are 35mm) like was done with Revenge of the Fallen were scenes such as the forest fight and Devastator had been filmed in 70mm for IMAX release. The experience was somewhat duplicated for Wal-Mart's "Big Screen Edition" Blu-ray edition of the film. So news, but not really news as I think Revenge was the last film to do anything IMAX specific as it pre-dated the current 3D craze.

  2. Low quality 3D gimmick to please Paramount managers with no brain thinking that they could sell Transformers movies like 20th Fox did with Avatar. That is not going to happen. 1) Paramount doesn't have the marketing machine nor force that 20th Fox has; 2) there is no James Cameron name to sell; 3) there can't be pseudo pro-environmental lies and nonsense '68s style to promote the movie unless they wanted to turn Autobots and Decepticons into blu alien cats looking low quality cartoonish CGI that would be telling nonsense about trees of life and nature and so on and on.

  3. UGH i fuckin HATE 3D, please still put this movie in imax cause i was really looking forward to TF3 in IMAX

  4. transformers imax is really clear picture and more parts on the robots and bigger scenes but more time is needed for imax transformers to be on the bigger screens and who knows more money to use imax. just the same when using new enjoyment of your favorite movie or franchise when using imax or 3d cameras it needs upmost potential use of those equipment. so transformers 3 needs to be really good.

  6. sad news, i really liked the imax scenes of the big screen edition ... same with the dark knight blu ray, it just looks effing awesome when the screen pops up and the picture gets crystal clear!

  7. Yea, i would prefer if the whole movie was shot in Imax format instead of this damn 3D shit, i heard they will shoot the whole new batman movie in imax format, that would be awesome. But nothing is ever set in stone, i wish michael bay would have done this too tough :(

  8. IMAX and 3D have nothing to do with each other. As far as Revenge being the last film to do anything with IMAX, that's completely incorrect. Inception had IMAX filmed scenes, Tron which will be coming out shortly does as well. There was also a press release a few months back announcing that WB signed an agreement with IMAX to film the next Batman completely in IMAX.

  9. It is highly possible that the removal of the IMAX feature would greatly speed up the CGI Production process. IMAX requires massive loads of more polygon and textured rendering time than the normal 35mm format. With regards to TF3's action scenes, probably best to chuck it and forgo anything that might cause delays.

Honestly, that's what I would do to stay under budget and still put the film out on time.

  10. @LionBoogy: so having a CGI more cartoonish rendered faster at lower precision with less polygons is going to be a good thing to you? That is going to spell death to this movie instead.

  11. ^ lol, so Transformers 1 looks cartoonish too you? and the last battle in Transformers 3 and a few others are and crap aswell? those are in the 35mm format, only forest fight and devestator is 70mm (imax format) so uhh, its not gonna be death to the movie. Stop posting fucking stupid comments.

Yeah LionBoogy, it's a shame IMAX has to make place for the worst thing in movie history......3D.
It would be much better to see IMAX scenes than the stupid gimmick of 3D.
I still don't get it, that the studio bosses don't get it, that the general public don't want to see movies in 3D.

  14. i like IMAX just as much as the next guy but... at least give it a whirl, like Michael and the crew. They're expirimenting on a MOVIE i know not a good idea. But lt's just see, maybe a trailer is around the corner who knows :)

  15. @Martinus Prime: exactly, 3D is a gimmick studio managers want to sell at any cost. They are going to cause their own multinational groups to go bankrupt on it. Manufacturers spent billions on hardware trusting fake statistics and surveys that told them and their investors that everyone wanted to buy 3D after Avatar got huge numbers. BUT that is not the case, at all. The 3D gimmick bubble deflated pretty quickly faster than the Avatar one that surely never deserved and there is hope Avatar2 and Avatar3 won't get those huge numbers when they will get released. Avatar has been the worst most disappointing marketing hype only thing that James Cameron created, long gone the times of Terminator1&2 and Aliens.. and even True Lies was a masterpiece compared to the void that Avatar is.
So having to get Transformers3 movie with a lower quality cartoonish CGI to avoid IMAX but just to go plain 3D it's not a good thing at all.
Also IMAX 3D exists BUT studio managers don't want to spend money on it. So they want to deliver crappy 3D just to sell a 3D ticket. They don't care about quality at all, they think that those watching Transformers movies are easily fooled and no one won't notice a drop in CGI quality.. but that is not the case.
If the CGI is not going to be at the very least exactly the same quality of Transformers3 rendering then it will fail to deliver.

  16. I agree, 3D is a gimmick that still isn't selling for me. It's just too distracting. I like it, but I don't love it.

I'm not saying I hate IMAX either. I'd rather watch TF3 in 2D IMAX than in 35mm 3D and at this point they can't go back in time and reshoot everything the way I'd prefer it to be.

We're stuck with 3D, but honestly you have a choice to just watch it in normal 2D, too. That's what I'm doing. Just sayin'... ^_^

And really, if you find a good theater with GREAT BOOMING sound, that more than makes up for the lack of a beautiful 70mm. Wouldn't you agree? :)

  17. And just to be clear, I do intend to watch TF3 in the theaters more than 10 times. I watched TF1 in the theaters 15 times and TF2 in the theaters 10 times. I don't even remember how many times on DVD/Blu-Ray. haha

I don't need IMAX or 3D to make me happy. That would be just icing on the cake. And as a big Transformers fan, it's a very happy cake. :)

I'll hopefully see you all at Bot-con 2011 in my Bumblebee costume again? haha

  18. @Anonymous 11/23/2010 5:04 PM: you meant the same quality of Transformers2 rendering maybe?

  19. Since Transformes 3 is using the same 3d cameras as avatar will in have the same aspect ratio as avatar? I' am talking about it not having the black bars above and below the picture. I think its looks better that way

    ReplyDelete
  20. ^ I would hope so, i love the no black bars scenes in the imax version of TF2.

  21. If thats the case then who cares about IMAX it will look just the same on bluray as TF2 and TDK and avatar

Holy crap LionBoogy, 15 times for the first and 10 times for the second! I only went 3 times each.
Don't get me wrong, I also can't get enough of the movies and watched the blu-rays also many, many times, but isn't 10-15 times a lot for the short period of time that the movie is in the theatre?

Sorry I can't meet you at Comic-Con, cause I'm from The Netherlands and its a bit expensive for me to come to the U.S. only for the Comic-Con. I 'll have to make it long holiday trip one of these days, man I wish I lived in the U.S., even better if I migrate :)

  23. @Anonymous 11/24/2010 11:07 AM: Avatar looks cartoonish. The CGI is just awful, not photorealistic at all.
