Transformers 3 Filming in Cambodia

It seems that sometime in early February, Transformers: Dark of the Moon filmed in Cambodia at the Angkor Wat Temple. The news had first been posted at the MichaelBay.com forums but nothing after that appeared to verify the story until a TFW2005 commenter posted a video of some of the filming that apparently occurred all day. No details on what was involved but probably second unit and none of the principle actors. According to the press release (below), they also filmed at the Bokor Hill Station. Thanks to Sahara for the link.

Press release:
“Transformers 3” To Be Shot in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, January 21, 2011 AKP –
“Transformers 3 – Dark Side of the Moon” will be shot in Cambodia in February 2011 at the Angkor Temple Complex and Bokor Hill Station, according to Mr. Nicholas Simon, producer of Indochina Productions.

“Transformers 3” is the third part of the well-known science-fiction movie about TRANFORMER robots defending the earth.

“We want to shoot in Cambodia as it is one of the most beautiful countries around. With both Angkor Wat and Cambodia’s natural wonders, we will be able to maintain the large production scale of TRANFORMERS while giving the impression that the story is traveling all around the planet earth,” said Mr. Nicholas Simon in his letter addressed to Cambodian Minister of Information H.E. Khieu Kanharith.

This production will highlight the beauty the Angkor Temple Complex to a worldwide audience, he said, adding that it is estimated that over 500 million people have seen the previous two Transformers and with TRANFORMERS 3, millions more will discover the beautiful landscapes and cultural heritage of Cambodia.

Mr. Simon also recalled his good experiences in film production working in Cambodia on projects such as ORACLE, Matt Dillon’s CITY OF GHOSTS and Legendary Pictures’ I AM THAT MAN. –AKP

  1. That's the Bayon complex inside greater Angkor Thom, just north of Angkor Wat.

  2. I wonder if this scene will have something to do with the rumour of megatron hiding out in a jungle at the start of the film?

it does seem to make sense, jungle-ey setting, creepy, almost evil structures, and notice how fast the camera was moving side-to-side, my speculations are
1: someone's being scolded, or possibly even a small brawl, between decipticons, possibly Megs and starscream, or even shockwave and Megs
    2. Megs has turned into gollum

  5. VERY BEAUTIFUL PLACE...but its funny how he says that he wants to showcase the beauty of the country when he will DESTROY it via CGI later.

  6. The reason why they go back and forth is multiple takes of the same shot. You always need at least 3 takes because 1 is never enough.

It's possible that it's an establishing shot to show a new Decepticon holdout. Dunno! We shall see!

  7. I think this is the scene in the beginning when the Megatron is hiding in the jungles of Africa. There was a topic somewhere...
