Spielberg To Direct Transformers 4?

The short answer is probably not. The long answer is it is way too soon to know. However, that has not stopped MovieWeb from posting their "exclusive" that Hollywood great Steven Spielberg "may" direct Transformers 4. Spielberg is the Executive Producer of the three Transformers films so he has at least the basic knowledge to easily take up were Michael Bay leaves off. Don't get excited though, this "information" comes from Tyrese Gibson who was suggesting this hypothetical scenario.
If Michael Bay decides to come back for Transformers 4, I'll be there. We'll make it happen. (Right now), I think we are all exhausted with the process. If this movie does what we are all assuming it's going to do, then, I think it’s time to revisit this conversation. When it's time. There are no concepts, no direction, no nothing for Transformers 4, because everyone has been so focused on Transformers: Dark of the Moon. But here is the safety net. Are you ready for this? Michael Bay decides to not come back for Transformers 4. There is always Steven Spielberg! I am not saying that Steven Spielberg is for a fact going to direct Transformers 4. But it is a beautiful safety net to know that one of the biggest, most respected directors in the world happens to be an executive producer on Transformers. He is someone who knows this world. And he could easily step in and direct Transformers 4 if he decided to. The thing is, there are a lot of directors who deal with producers who happen to not be Steven Spielberg. So if the director decides to bow out of their film, they are sent scrambling. "Who can we get to direct this?" What a hell of a safety net this is if Michael Bay decides not to come back. Steven Spielberg could easily step in and make it happen."
While I like the idea, I just don't see it happening. While Spielberg isn't opposed to directing sequels, it is always sequels to his own movies not someone else's. Nor do I see him wanting to wade in the waters of the comparisons between how he does Transformers vs. Michael Bay which has no chance of going well for one of them. From a money perspective he doesn't really stand to gain. While Bay might clear $75 million plus from this film, that is probably smaller than what Spielberg and DreamWorks will get. A quote from an EW interview on Super 8 comes to mind, "When I started out as a TV director, my pie-in-the-sky dream was to make a little movie that would get some notoriety, and then [the late Bond series producer] Cubby Broccoli would call me and ask me to direct the next James Bond picture. But I could never get Cubby Broccoli to hire me—and now, sadly, they can’t afford me." If Spielberg isn't willing to lower his cost to direct a dream job, he is sure isn't going to bother with Transformers. Any case, until the first week or two of box office numbers come in, Transformers 4 is not even on the table.

Back to Tyrese, he also spoke about the infamous Twins from the Revenge of the Fallen.
"I never liked those characters, and I am glad they're not back. I think that every nationality in the world deserves to walk out of a movie and still feel good about themselves. I think it's a responsibility to the fans. I just didn't like some of the things they were saying, and the way they were going about whatever it was they were doing in that film. To be honest, I didn't think that they added to the movie at all. I guess (Michael Bay) was just feeling something out. Moving on, we're here now. Let's go ahead and close it out. We'll close it out with Trans3: Dark of the Moon!"

  1. I don't take anything Tyrese says seriously. He's proposed all sorts of ideas and hyped things up way too much, some as definite fact. Like when he told everyone to watch out for something awesome during the MTV Movie Awards this year and no new clip ended up being shown.

  2. I'm done with TF when bay leaves...so is a huge chunk of the GA, and paramount knows it.

  3. I think listening to Tyrese talk is like listening to a basketball player being interviewed after a game. He just babbles about whatever random thought stomps through his head. Not a fan.

  4. I love the Transformer movies but I don't think I can take a 4th film. Michael Bay is a one of a kind director, espcially for these movies! Nothing against Speilberg I just don't think he can fill Bay's shoes when it comes to Transformers
P.S. I didn't read any of the artical above just throwing out my ideas...

  5. SS Will be a fine new director. I am also wishing that Ehren Kruger will b back to write the 'reboots' cuz of his knowledge of the Transformers myth!

  6. I dont want a Transformers 4. I want this to end as a solid trilogy. I think that if they want to make more Transformer films then they should just reboot the series.

  7. On an unrelated subject.....STAY AWAY FROM DOTM VIDEO GAME, I KNOW IT'S THE SAME PEOPLE THAT DID WFC BUT THEY DROPPED THE BALL BIG TIME..SAVE YOUR $64 BUCKS OTHERWISE YOU'LL BE PISSED LIKE ME!!!

  8. Let's hope so. Spielberg should erase Transformers3 using time-travel paradoxes like on some Transformers episodes, get back Megan Fox and cancel the pathetic Transformers3 movie.

  9. @Anonymous 6/16/2011 2:20 AM: Transformers3 production is really bad and cheap. Lower quality CGI due to 3D gimmick. Broken continuity from first two movies, many boring useless cheap scenes, bad acting. It's not a trilogy anymore. Bad novels, they fired Alan Dean Foster writer too and his replacement Peter David is low quality writer(read:cheaper). Soundtrack and score are a disappointment as well this time.
And so Transformers3 videogame is bad too. As I suspected and it seemed obvious.
This Transformers3 movie just deserves to flop.

    Are you on crack?

  12. I wonder if Spielberg, if he ever directed TF4, would get John Williams to compose the score. And if he does, how the music will compare to Steve Jablonsky's work (which I enjoy)? Just thinking out loud. :)

You can tell ALL that from a couple film clips and the tv spots?

  15. With all due respect, while I have alot of respect for Spielberg, I didn't (and still don't) completely agree with his choice of Michael Bay for directing this.

At this point, IMHO, they should do this:
    a)reboot the franchise;
    b)get a director who actually is ENTHUSED, RESPECTFUL, a TRANSFORMERS GEEK, instead of one who thinks of Transformers as, "some stupid kid's toy", as Bay stated when offered the job back in 2006;
    c)get a different writer - Ehren Kruger is one of the reasons why some of the writing sucks; can't completely blame Orci & Kurtzman; Bay also had a HUGE part in the writing, too;
d)Redesign the robots so that their designs are closer to the Binaltech and Alternators lines: in my opinion, those are the two TF toylines with the best, most realistic designs.

Also, everything I've read in the novelization, I'm seeing verbatim in all these clips and reports of clips that are coming out, and I'm only seeing DOTM to confirm whether my suspicions are confirmed - so far, they are. We'll see.

  17. If their is going to be a TF4, i guarantee it would be the last. Megatron, Starscream, all the deceptacons are dead! The only plot that they have left to do if they wanted to would have to involve Unicron (for those who even know who this is). He's one of the biggest enemies in the Transformers series back in the day and I wouldn't be able to imagine how a movie about him would be like... it would be amazing!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Galvatron and Omega Supreme. There is PLENTY of story yet to be told. The problem with this series being a true trilogy, is the bad guys haven't won yet. There hasn't been any hardshipto overcome, and every movie could stand alone.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Let's hope we have a TF 4,but they put it to where they go its historical, meaning how the autobots and decepticons got into a war,

    ReplyDelete
  20. just bring in Unicron..that offers plenty of storyline. hell I probably know more about transformers than bay does and I'm just a 15 year old girl. It'd be nice if they could have some one more enthusiastic about the series directing it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'd actually like a reboot. The first and third movies were pretty good, but I still feel somewhat like they ruined my childhood a bit. I think transformers needs a fresh start.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Watched DOTM this past weekend liked it but definitely didn't love it. Love the first two but this one fell below expectations. If they make another please change out the girl Megan Fox is a way better actress than that model was. Sorry but that is my opinion and seriously enough with the sequels shulda done something way different for this one imo.

  23. Transformers 4: War On Cybertron
    Just thinking out loud people

    ReplyDelete
  24. just got back from watching DOTM for the 4th time in 2 days and i tried finding something to work off of for the forth but the only thing i was thinking was war on cybertron and or put in unicorn. i think both those movies would be pretty good.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I hope they dont make transformers 4. It should end as a good trilogy. If they ruin the series with a 4th i hate them all. Plus they dont have any of the original people. It sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  26. i don't think that if there will be a part 4 it was going to be a hit. Because all i gone the cybertron, megatron, sentinel prime, and everything. if there will be a part 4, wow thats just surprisingly not good.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would like to extend my salute to michael bay and Spielberg for creating such awesome movie, like transformer I know some to your fans still waiting for transformer 4, and hope that will happen soon, for me I really really like the movie God Speed to both of you.

    ReplyDelete
  28. transformers was awesome.. especially optimus prime what a gangster the voice the way he looks and moves and everything is almost dead on for the opitmus prime in the old series.. if there is a TF4 unicron comes in and galvatron comes to life with starscream and some other remaining decepticons left.. lets hope bc that would be freakin awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hope there will be a transformers 4.. My family and my cousins really love transformers.. We hope so...

    ReplyDelete
  30. With all due respect I think and my opinion they did a great movie.. If there will be a transformer 4 will it will be nicer.. I'm looking forward of seeing the transformers 4 be shown all over the world. We are the supporters of transformers 4 in philippines.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love all the transformer movies and personally think that a fourth should be made to explain the war on cybertron.
For the fith you could introduce unicron and galvatron.
Also it seems to me that no-one has mentioned the dinobots?
why couldn't they make a movie that included them as enemies or allies.
    Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dinobots, rodimus prime, unicron, galvatron, and not to mention they just put like 200 decepticons on earth. A 3rd movie that will make over a billion dollars world wide. There will be a sequel and if Spielberg doesn't make it hasbro will sell the rights to someone who will. The only reason there was even a original series was to have a show that was all so a commercial for selling toys.

    ReplyDelete
  33. make the forth movie about unicron. have it where he is awaken from the energy pruduced from where centinel prime was trying to bring cybertron to earth. and unicron has followers that come to earth and prepare earth to be eatin and the autobots fight off the followers and the us army has made cybertronien battle suits to fight off unicron. when he arrives to earth. sam and the auto bots with the other main characters go into space and fight off unicron. and towards the end of the movie have it where sam is devoured by unicron. and leave it at that, that way ppl will want to kno more about wat will happen to sam. and if this story line is used in the 4th movie i want credit due to me. and i want %3 profit of the movie

  34. im a girl but i still love all the movies i would be very dissapointed if there wasn't a transformers 4! love u Bumblebee!<3

    ReplyDelete
  36. well ithink every last one of you is wrong i am a huge fan of transformers and i would love to see a transformers4 love it love it love it love it so micheal bay dont quit shila belouf dont quit megan fox dont quit i would love to see another one of transformers(p.s. my favorite car is and will always be bumble bee)so make another one, one more.

    ReplyDelete
  37. first of all the twins were awesome and beat the crap out of devastator while it beat the crap out of them two and they were funny.
second of all tf4 should be split into two parts. the firstpart includes the war for cybertron and how it started also how unicron came to be one of the greatest villains. the second should include the war against unicron and his minions and optimus revives megatron one last time to defeat unicron but later after beating unicron megatron takes controll and leads unicrons minions and turns into galvatron and optimus and some new autobots as well as old ones come to fight a new war and the last against galvatron (megatron)

  38. I definatly think they should make a fourth movie. i mean come on there are millions of fans out there and if they're anything like me i know they will be extremely disappointed if the movies do not continue. so lets hope they do. oh and im extremely sad about my favorite character dying RIP IRONHIDE

    ReplyDelete
  39. .I hope that there going to make a number 4. Make unicron in it and bring back some decepticons as in megatron, starscream, soundwave and shochwave. Then I think that they sould make both decepticons and autobots team up on unicron and then just kill off every transformer. P.S. decepticons should of won in the end of number 3 I.R.L because #1.The decepicons outnubered the autobots by 300 to 9 #2.The decepticons had all there best transfomers on earth.

  48. Who cares about a well rounded trilogy. Blah. Make more transformers, there's still so much to tell. If Shia doesn't want to be apart of the mega success find someone else. I like all three movies and feel a "reboot" would simply be a disaster. Why follow tradition. These are not super heros that only had limited rivals. This is the Transformers with years of storyline still to tell and plenty of opposition for the Autobots. Bring in only the best no sublime actors or actresses, directors or special effects teams. Keep it going like it's been and make it amazing. Can't wait until there's a Transformers 4, and there will be!

  49. TRANSFORMERS IS RUBBISH NOW,THEY DESTROYED THE STORY WHEN THEY REPLACED MEGAN,Now your going to replace Shia ur insane youve ruined what WAS A BRILLIANT STORY,

Personally I think it would be sad to think of DOTM as the last of the Transformers films, I had been itching for no 3 to come out ever since Megatron flew off in ROTF.
Although I agree with the majority of people on here, although Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is fit, her acting is appalling and there was chemistry missing from Megan Fox, not only is she absolutely stunning but she can act as well. Shia is the perfect actor to be the main character and his on-screen relationship with Megan Fox made the first two films.
I really hope there is a fourth film as all three have been brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Really?

Wow you guys like to troll alot.

Firstly try reading EVERYTHING TF4 related.

You will see that the original concept of the movies was 2 trilogies. Also, how can it be a 'War on Cybertron' when we are led to believe that Cybertron was destroyed by the space bridge at the end of DOTM.

Rumours are abound that IT WILL NOT be a reboot, but will follow on story wise from DOTM. However, that said if they decide to go with Unicron story (which is 90% they will) then chances are it will be set many years later, as Sam Witwicky doesnt appear in any of the G1 series, or even in the animated movie itself, so he will either be a grandad/dad to Spike and Daniel Witwicky, or maybe a relative.

I heard from a trusted source that the trilogy will probably be based on the Episodes of Unicron and the Death of Optimus/birth of Rodimus, and will finalise the trilogy with the Return of Optimus Prime, as like the animated, as hte film guys think Optimus is too massive a character to kill off forever!

Of course, it could all be hearsay and might be something completely different, i guess we'll just have to wait and see!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you Steven Speilberg for not giving up on doing a fourth film

    ReplyDelete
  56. as long as shia and megan are rehired and brought back for a 4th film if there is one then I just think that the person who got them to leave in the first place either spielburg or bay should not direct or produce the 4th film and either a new director or producer should be looked into consideration. you just don't take out the 2 most popular actor and actress out of a very good movie that has now been some what ruined over stupidness cause by the director or producer in movies the producer works for the director mr bay is mr speilburg's boss !

    ReplyDelete
  57. fourth movie would be great if they get megan fox back. &if steven speilberg directs
