Harry Potter Squashes Transformers at Box Office (Updated)

To no surprise Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 stomped Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the box office. Harry Potter took in a record breaking $168.55 million (including $1435M from midnight screenings) passing The Dark Knight ($158.4M) as the highest grossing weekend ever in North America. The result is DOTM suffered a 59% hit from the previous weekend taking in $39 million and passing Transformers I domestic total.

Overseas Harry Potter also squashed the competition taking in $307 million over the weekend easily passing the previous record holder of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger tides ($252M). The result it has made $475 million worldwide in just three days. By comparison, Dark of the Moon remains strong with an international total of $460M bringing the movies worldwide total to $762.8M after three weeks of release. At this point I will be really surprised if Transformers 3 doesn't cross the $1 billion threshold, the only question is will it do it before or after Harry Potter 8.

On a related note, here is a quick mini-review of Harry Potter. It is basically the opposite of Dark of the Moon to a degree. DOTM focused purely on the visuals and special effects to the detriment of character and story. Harry Potter focuses on the characters and the story to the detriment of visual resulting in the Battle of Hogwarts and the supporting characters taking more of a backseat then was necessary for a story broken into two parts. Having said that, the film is very entertaining and worth seeing for any fan of Harry Potter. 4/5 stars.

A word of warning - do not see Potter in 3D. For one thing it is fake 3D using post production conversion. Even if the conversion is perfect, the film has a dark palette in color choices. The result is dark colors plus the 3D sunglasses effect results in a poor visual experience. The reason Avatar worked is James Cameron made sure to make a palette choice of blue skies, bright lights and bright colors so it mitigated the sunglasses effect. Just something to pay attention to when deciding to pay that extra money on 3D or not for upcoming movies.

Update: Only one blog post and people turn on you huh? Seems doesn't take ...well anything considering box office numbers are good for about a day or two of bragging at most. Especially when this was predicted weeks ago, with only the amount being the question. Figure it’s the vocal minority considering the volume of anonymous posts. Any case, like it or not, how well Harry Potter 7 does is relevant to how well Transformers 3 does. Make no mistake, these two movies are directly competing against each for box office champ and to become the next movie to cross the billion dollar threshold. When Harry Potter 8 comes out swing with nearly half a billion worldwide total in just three days, not only does that deserve a hat tip for simply being rare and remarkable, but it also means DOTM takes a corresponding hit in ticket sales that could affect its chances of crossing a billion. In short, how well HP7 does reflects on whether or not DOTM continues to do well.

Tying into that is perception of the movies, thus the mini review as I found them to be a study in contrast. Those contracts could also impact sales as how people think about a film increases or decreases word of mouth and the repeat business critical to making a billion dollars. While I think DOTM missed the boat in character and story, I also think Harry Potter 8 missed a chance with spectacle by essentially glossing over much of the Battle of Hogwarts to focus on character and story. Add this to the mistake of post-production fake 3D (compared to DOTM's Real 3D) and I could see this resulting in a decrease in repeat business (which could go in TF3 favor). The net results all this combines into an unpredictable mess to determine who the box office champ will be.

I guess I could have spelled this out in the initial post but I thought the previous weeks had already set up that these movies would be competing against each other. I also thought it was known that Harry Potter 8 would come out strong but be too early to know if it had legs for the coming weeks. The net result is all this is just speculation that is too early to back up with anything substantial. So despite these last few paragraphs what we know remains the same - HP8's first weekend was outstanding, TF3 lost ground and both are on track to pass a billion we just don't know which will do it first. Only now it took a page to write that instead of a few paragraphs.

  1. WTF? Moderator this title of this thread is just dumb man..Transformers has been out for over two weeks of course Harry Potter would do better because its just coming out but Harry potter isn't being consistent 90 mill the first day over 40 mill the next day and over 30 mill the 3rd day and the weekdays will be even slower...TFDOTM is well over 700 mill right now will be over 850 mill by the time Japan and China gets it and thatwill push DOTM over the Billion dollar mark..

  2. Even at the height of its MOST hard-core action, Harry Potter films will always be a bunch of British kids running around, flicking wands at each other. Weak. Hopefully Dark Knight Rises can kick them of the record.

  5. Please don't criticize Harry Potter fans, (Anonymous 7/17/2011 11:06 PM) if you are not one. The books are well written pieces of children's literature and the movies have received mostly positive reviews (can't say the same for Transformers). It just makes you look like an ignorant fool.

  9. Comparing Transformers 3 vs Harry Potter 8 is comparing apples to oranges. Harry Potter is in it's 8th movie...of course it's going to do good. It took 7 movies to build up their fan base. Transformers 3 is currently way above $700 Million and i have complete confidence it will cross the $1 Billion mark...as well as Harry Potter 8.

  12. The way tlamb made it sound is like dotm is a failure just because hp made so much money over the weekend, well if i'm not mistaken hp has been at this 8 times and barely ever made it to 300 million except afew times and once at 317 million, transformers beat hp evey single time domestically, so i'd say its about time!!! after 8 times and the massive fan base and this was supposed to be the last one, but hp has always been known to have massive up front turnouts, and then it free falls, but having said that, it will most likely pass dotm, but dotm is doing incredible and certainly is a massive blockbuster, all these types of movies go up and down at the box office, just look at the pirates, and dotm will still earn 350 - 360 million domestically and solid chance of a billion world wide, what the hell is rong with that!!!, what blows my mind is that this is supposed to be a transformers site, not a hp site, sometimes i wonder?, when i was younger i tried to get into hp but i dispised it, a few years later i looked at it again and it made me sick, its just not my cup of tea, just too whimpy for me, i will always be a solid, hardcore transformers fan until the end and i dont care if hp makes 10 trillion, TRANSFORMERS RULES!!!

  13. Who the hell are these people on here starting this rottem tomators crap again , everybody knows that these so called critics have always been in total love with the little harry potter boy, thats nothing new, and they dispise michael bay and they always will, but for anyone to say that these so called critics are the be all end all of any movie is obviosly dead rong, why would you let anyone decide what movie is good and what movie isn't for you, thats just something i will never ever understand and obviosly the people liked dotm, it had a cinama score of an A, so the hell with rottem tomators!!, i come hear to talk about TRANSFORMERS not fagboy harry potter or RT.

  15. Harry potter had a 3 day condensed opening and it was a hell of a lot less consistent than DOTM. Yes Potter knocked TF off the top spot but after 2 weeks, I mean what's point of bringing it up in such a way?

TF has brilliant action, it's not a story piece it's like a comedy with awesome Action. Just like Bad Boys, and anyone that says that a buddy cop film suffers with character work is missing the point entirely . Potter is a literary adaptation that has had 8 years to tell it's story. When there aren't dragons involved it's just kids waving wands around. How much would air bender have benefited from having 8 films to tell it's story instead of 90mins? And how does the action in potter compare to the stuff in air bender conceptually. Potter is great but let's not loose context here.

TF got a audience score of 90% and is making just about as much money as the insane last installment, even after a sequel everyone supposedly hated. So what if critics insist on reviewing an action comedy like a character drama. It does what it does because the audience is hungry for it.

    For the record,
TF didn't have as wide an opening as Potter has.

  16. I'm a Transformers fan, not a Harry Potter fan. I don't care how well HP does in the box office. It's completely irrelevant to me.

The comparison doesn't take anything away from me and my love of the TF movies. They're two completely different fandoms. You know, like watching football vs. Glee.

  18. I've been following this site for years, and even if sometimes I didn't agreed with the what the Moderator wrote, I never really had much problems with his oppinions, he always kept some respect... but I'm kind of dissapointed with the way he wrote this post... It's too biased, too much like: "See! HP was a good movie, that's why DOTM failed!"

Now look how the same report written in Seibertron.com is more focused in Transformers, without adding any unnecesary comment or comparison:

"It was bound to happen, but Transformers Dark of the Moon was usurped as king of the box office by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. If nothing else our beloved Transformers were taken down by a worthy adversary, considering the latest and final installment in the Potter franchise earned $168.55 million and smashed several box office records including highest-grossing opening weekend ever.

But enough about the wizard, we've got our own impressive numbers to talk about! Transformers Dark of the Moon raked in another $21.5 million over the weekend, and became the first film of 2011 to cross the $300 million mark. After only 19 days Transformers Dark of the Moon has earned $302.8 million domestically and $460 million in foreign markets for a total of $762.8 million.

    Domestic: $302,800,000 39.7%
    + Foreign: $460,000,000 60.3%
    = Worldwide: $762,800,000"

  21. I saw HP a couple days ago, just to close out the series. Still liked Transformers a lot better. I can't put my finger on the reason why, but the last HP movie seemed really weak. I guess I was hoping the general audience would agree and HP wouldn't have such a strong opening. I know, wishful thinking. I knew Transformers would get knocked off, but I still hope it'll make a billion before that crappy HP movie. For the record I agree with the blog owner: don't see it in 3D. It's crap. Save your money and see it in 2D if you have to see it.

Most Harry Potter fans very much dislike Twilight and Twilight fans are the same way. You obviously know nothing of either fandom so that comment must have been a joke.

That being said, I am a Harry Potter fan and a fan of Transformers. But honestly, it is not surprising that Harry Potter has been on fire the last few days. It has 7 novels, 3 other books, 8 movies, and a star studded cast with the likes of Alan Rickman, David Thewlis, and tons of other rather famous British actors. It has been growing strong since the first novel was published. The Transformers only have an old 80s children’s television series and a few movies. There really is no comparison and people shouldn’t be trying to make one. Transformers are entertaining as hell and I loved them, but I believe that Harry Potter is much more than that and the stories are much, much deeper and have more of a lasting impact of its audience.

I just watched Transformers 3 and the effects were most excellent and so were the ones used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; just in there own way.

  40. ya know, i think alot of people are very upset with the way tflamb described his post, i've always respected this site and enjoy the freedom that tflamb gives us to express are feelings about tranformers movies and related topics, but i just dont understand why the post was described that way, dont you think it could have been anounced that transformers just went over 300 million and its kicking ass over seas as the front headline or something to that effect and ya know, mention harry potter last, i mean my god who hasn't heard about how great the hp box numbers are, it kinda rubs tran's fans the rong way, if you want to hear about hp, then go to a hp site, to me its ok to mention hp but if its a transformers site then transformers should always come first no matter what, but thats just my opinion and obviously tflamb will make their own decisions and like i said i've always enjoyed this site and obviously tflamb does a great job and has strong opinions as well, so its up to the individual to decide on weather or not they want to continue to visit this site or not, nuff said...Oh, I almost forgot TRANSFORMERS RULES!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow, settle down people. If you don't like the blog don't visit it, quit throwing lil tantys complaining what a crap blog it is. YOU HAVE A CHOICE.

While fans of both franchises, HP clearly shows much more substance and plot development. Hell, TF obviously holds entertainment value with massive amounts of CGI and hot girls for the boys.

We get it, in the words of Michael Bay, "screw those critics". Yes, they're fun to watch but you cannot deny that the movies are completely brainless. You do not have to sacrifice character and story substance for entertainment.

Then again I'm sure TFLAMB still appreciates the flames for the advertising revenue that is brought in.

  44. This blog owner posted about the earthquake in Japan and people complained about its irrelevance to Transformers. His blog, his words....plain & simple. It doesn't obligate him to give DOTM great reviews if he felt it could've been better. As a TF fan with no interest in HP, I know I can come to this site with honest and passionate insight on the TF franchise. If they make a Go-Bots movie and he reformats this site for that, I may still check it out :-P

    ReplyDelete
  45. Okay, seriously. This is TFLAMB, with Transformers fans. Why would we, TF fans, care whether HP downs TF or not? We are here becasue we love TF, and have nothing to do with HP. See? This post ends with people bashing HP. Why? YOU started it. Maybe you should modify the post asap.

And even if you want to compare HP and Tf..
Look, HP has been in box office since many years ago compared to TF. Then of course it has more fans / ppl are more curious to see the last movie. If it beats TF, then it's not a great thing to say. And what has it to do with us, TF fans? Nothing. Especially for most of us, TF fans who don't give a shit about HP.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anon 7/18/2011 9:17 PM

Exactly, that's why I put the same report as posted in Seibertron.com, you can compare how it's written in a more informative way and as soon as the point is made that HP broke records, they go on on just T3 numbers "...But enough about the wizard, we've got our own impressive numbers to talk about!..."

    ReplyDelete
  47. thats not what this is about, we dont give rats ass how much potter made, your a disgrace, this is not about harry potter period, and this is not about m.bay, this is supposed to be a tran's site, where transformers should always be front and center, not harry potter but i see where this is going, i dont give a crap weather some one likes the movie or hates it, the post was terrible and alot more of us enjoyed the movie, but regardless its an insult for the movie fans who come here to support transformers, not harry potter, now thats a real disgrace, its fine if you love harry potter, i dont have any problem with that at all, but it just kills me that you would put harry potter before transformers, WTF?, i'm sorry i just dont understand that at all, if this was a harry potter site i would understand, but this all about transformers period, do you understand what i mean?, i know most of you trans fans do.

Ofcourse Harry would be going to gross more then Transformers:

    a) It was the last Harry movie in a long run.
    b) the critics are very good on Harry (for the viewer still doubting often a good reason)
    c) Transformers 2 was such a crap the non-TF fans did not believe TF3 could be good.
    d) Critics were up and down on TF3.

I am not going to harry (waiting for dvd or so).

    I loved TF3.

I have no issues with the blogowner ranking Harry higher then TF3.
I mean, I put a WHOLE LOT of movies above TF2.

  55. some of you are missing the point, we definately should not call people names and say nasty things, but this post should be critisized big time, again we all know potters numbers, its been jamed down are throat weather we like it or not and thats not even what this is about or weather or not you liked the movie, this is a transformers site not box office mo jo, so i think alot of people dont understand why harry potter was mentioned first before transformers in a kind of disrespectful way, tlamb has kind of explained himself in that what ever happens with potter impacts dotm, i agree and i think most of us understand that, but what alot of us are saying is that if this is a trans site then we should be disgussing whats going on with transformers way before any mention of harry potter and some of you are critisizing us for feeling that way, calling some of us 14 years old or younger, and people are free to say those things but i see nothing rong with putting transformers front and center at all times and get this, on a transformers site, any one can go to a regular movie site and here posts like this one all day everyday, but we come hear to specifically talk transformers on all levels and whats going on in the transworld not the hog warts and wizards world.

  69. why do trans fans take it so seriously? well the first thing we should not do is call people names and say nasty stuff. having said that, when some of us are pissed off about this post its because we love transfomers and some of us believe that transformers on any level should always take precidence over any other movie, if in fact this is a tranformers site and obviuosly that did not happen hear, harry potter took the spotlight period, and i believe people have every right to be pissed, if you take a look at the siebertron website after the weekend the very first thing they said was how well tranformers was doing, it was the front headlines, ya know to get all the fans pumped up and excited, this post was horrible, it was depressing, dam sure didn't pump me up, and then you have people come on here and say if you enjoyed the movie your brainless or you must be 14 years old or younger, they sound like the ebert crowd or the so called critics crowd , and then you have the nerve to ask us why do we take it so personally,WTF!!, like we should just sit down and shut up, sorry thats not going to happen, i love the transformer universe, not the boy wizard world, and tflamb does an excellent job in my opinion, ive always liked this site and i hope this site stays around for a long time and this site has always been very fair for everyone and this is not a personal attack, some of us just think the post was disrespectful to alot of harcore transformer fans, and their is no need for any one to bash someone because they enjoyed the movie or like m.bay, its a transformers site, we can critisize or praise the movie but it should always stick to a discussion not personal attacks...i'll probably be attacked now, come on troops bring it on!!!

  72. Response to Update: Man you should be fucking happy you even get fucking comments! Now you're making me curse! You're up there bashing Transformers! When the movie has been out for two weeks of course HP will make more! And you is fucking turning on you. Stop taking everything so seriously! It's just a blog, do even have a life outside of it? Because it seems you have nothing to do to the point where you have to award HP and trash talk Transformers. You are so unthankful, according to your Transformers Dark of the Moon review. Saying how you didn't think it was all there. Michael Bay put his fucking back into this. Are you even a fan of Transformers. You make a blog about the live action movies, but you fucking trash talk it and make it sound like shit. I hate this blog! Everyone if you want transformers news i know three much better sources! www.transformers-mtmte.blogspot.com www.transformersdotmnews.blogspot.com and tfw2005.com. They are very loyal to the films and don't go on about how they can't afford such and such, or how they are unthankful for what MB has given us, or bash on Transformers! This blog stinks, man! Even though Harry Potter did do better than Transformers did it's opening weekend, Transformers will do better in the end, because HP movies always start off strong then end weak. Transformers stay strong the whole time through, believe it or not.
What kind of Transformers blog is this shit! I like harry potter and transformers equally, but when i want to hear about harry potter, i go check out sites about it, when i want to hear Transformers, i go to sites about it. What is this, Trash Talk the Transformers? Bring Harry to King?
    What kind of Transformers fan..........
    im done, fuck this blog!

  73. WTF is this? Transformers transformed into Hogwarts? I love TF and HP equally, but when i come to talk about Transformers news, i go to Transformers sites. When I want to talk about Harry Potter news I go to Harry Potter sites. I'm officialy done with this blog, because it has no respect for Transformers at all. And in the newer post about Box Officw results, it's obvious he's trying to save himself from losing so many people. Well, they didn't work. See ya bitches! :P
