Bay: Transformers 4 will Have "No Goofiness", Set Visit Tease

In an interview with Yahoo Movies that seems to have been done when Transformers: Age of Extinction was filming at the Detroit Hong Kong set, Michael Bay discussed how he changed his approach compared to the previous three films. Also Entertainment Tonight Canada teases their own set report from the set that will air sometime next week.
“I wanted the first Transformers to be very suburban and less cool,” Bay told us from the Detroit set of this fourth chapter. “This is a much more cinematic one. I focused on keeping this one slick. There won’t be any goofiness in this one. We went a bit too goofy [on the last one].”

But despite Optimus’s updated design, Bay is quick to point out that this really is the fourth in an ongoing series – “reboot” is a dirty word here. “It feels like a new chapter, this movie,” he says. “But it’s not a reboot. This movie lives in the history of the 'Transformers' movies, and this one starts three years after the last. It feels fresh.”

“I do big setups,” he says, with some understatement. “I like to do ‘runners’, where [the cameras are] with the characters in the war. We’re in the thick of it with Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci, and we’ve got all these things going off.”

[From a 15 minute reel]: Wahlberg plays a wacky inventor – think Doc Brown, but with firmer abs – and overprotective father to Nicola Peltz’s Tessa. We watch as he discovers a Transformer and gets drawn into a conflict that has taken its toll on Earth – a sign saying 'Remember Chicago' hints at the destruction at the end of the last film. And then we see Wahlberg get distracted by the arrival of his daughter’s race driver boyfriend, played by Jack Reynor.

As for the action: what’s most remarkable about what we see is that we can see anything at all. Bay’s special effects guru, John Frazier, has worked on movies like 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Spider-Man', and he says the Transformers films, despite being full of CG, are at least 50% practical. “Yeah baby,” he says. “It’s kind of a dying art in Hollywood – nobody does anything for real. John’s one of the grand masters of physical effects.

“When car makers heard we were making this fourth one, they’d literally drive cars to my office,” Bay laughs as he leads us to meet this movie’s cast of vehicles. “I’ve driven the Veyron – it’s pretty cool,” says Bay. “They all want to be Autobots, too – no one wants to be a Decepticon.”

  1. Don't believe Bay don't trust him, he said something like this before and look at the last movie is he really true to his word. and we all know that his new girl is going to hog the camera.

  2. Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. Each and every Bay movie is full of goofy shit...the man cannot help himself.

    1. Actually, now that I think about it The Rock had the least goofy shit of any Bay movie which is probably why its generally considered his best movie.

  3. Bots farting, bots humping, balls hanging, simmons hairy ass appearing, thumper dumper, deepwang deepwang and that's a few of Bays prized moments. I don't know if he's capable of changing his approach and then he just makes new names up of transformers, just pisses everyone off. Had some dumbass goofy bots in these movies too, what was up with Q, just so dumb and the twins cant get no dumber. Let us prey

    1. Yeah, those will be on his memorial reel at his funeral. Why is that reading the first sentence of your post made me laugh uncontrollably yet I didn't laugh at any of these gags during the movies?
Perhaps I still can't believe the shit Hasbro and Paramount let Bay get away with.
At least no transformer has been beaten with a giant dildo like poor Tony Schalub in Pain & Gain.

  5. I liked the twins. They were awesome! I also like a bit of goofiness. It breaks up some of the seriousness. Personally I hope he has a bit of goofiness in there..but not overboard.

Bay doesn't write the movie. He takes all the blame but he's only the director. He just gets to give an artistic display of what's given to him. Blame the writers..not Bay. He's a bad ass director.

  6. as the old cliche goes 'Just have to wait and see' DOTM was a grandslam film, i do hope for less humor but for as long as it is well-timed/placed and all the personalities are pretty much dead-on this movie has no limits as to what it could do.

  7. I also love the twins they are awesome and the reason they didn't appear in the third film is because no one liked them but they were made so kids can also enjoy the movie. I also loved Que it sucked that they died though and wheelie and brains their of course replacements of the twins, witch I think their great characters.I hope wheelie and brains stay in the film. Their still should be some humour in the fourth film and I think the mini-cons should show that humour.

    1. I could do without Brains, but Wheelie kicks ass...he has to be in Age of Extinction.

  8. At least Michael Bay himself recognizes that Transformers3 was a boring mess, unfortunately a good plot with a bad execution... He said: "There won’t be any goofiness in this one. We went a bit too goofy [on the last one].” .. and the last one is Transformers3. Not the 2nd one it's so fashionable hating on forums on the 'net.

      You are projecting.

    2. I didn't think DOTM was boring

    3. During the production of DOTM Bay criticized ROTF. Now, during the production of AOE he's criticizing DOTM. A director blasting his previous movie while saying his next movie will be better is the oldest promotional trick in the book.

As far as goofiness in the movies goes I think its ROTF by a landslide. Bay would have to work pretty hard to top the twins, Simmons harry ass, thumper-dumped, jetfire farting, wheeling humping a human's leg and devastator's balls.

  9. he really loathes losing at the oscars that's why he's attempting to change the films direction

  10. I highly doubt that has anything to do with it. He is probably trying to listen to fans again.

Thanks to all the complainers for ROTF. It wasn't horrible but between the writers strike and listening to fans it wasn't as good as it could have been.

Just like Ray said, ROTF has the most goofiness, not DOTM. I really like Brains in DOTM, he's just awesome with his grunty voice. I could do without Wheelie.
