Di Bonaventura Talks Not Rebooting Transformers

While promoting the new movie Jack Ryan, Transformers: Age of Extinction producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura commented again on how the series isn't rebooting but simply going in a new direction. Really, what Transformers is doing is the same as what comic books do with new #1 issues that re-launch the same series with new costumes, new team and direction. The X-Men books practically do it once a year. Soap operas do it too. Continuity and canon remain but the writers may not really touch on it beyond a vague reference as needed for the current story. It is a decades long writing tool that really has never been done for movies before. If Transformers can pull it off, it might allow for other franchises to gain the confidence to stop thinking a reboot is always a solution.
It’s definitely not a reboot. It’s an interesting question about what you should call it. On a certain level it’s a continuation of the previous stories, in the fact that it acknowledges what has transpired before it. It acknowledges in the last movie, the destruction of Chicago, it’s actually something that carries through the sort of emotional repercussions of that, not unlike 9/11 has emotional repercussions in the real world. In a fantasy world there are repercussions to what occurred.

That plays into the movie, moving forwards with a totally different human cast, who doesn’t know anything about the other humans, it’s not a reboot, but a continuation, yet you’re continuing with a new cast and group of characters. It was a big decision to do that.

We miss our friends that we did the first three with, and they were great, and they probably could’ve done more. But the advantage of doing it this way is that it feels almost like a first movie. It’s a very different dynamic than I’ve seen in a movie, I’m very curious. I guess Star Wars did that a little bit, but not so close together, the way we’re doing it.’

  1. We know that all already. Why keep telling that to us this whole time?

  2. Must be a lot of people who aren't understanding that yet

  3. I think it's pretty cool what they are attempting to do. Keeps it fresh and less reboots and remakes is awesome

    3. But not yet that the name is Lockdown. However, due to model of the car and the toy listings it couldn't be imagined as someone else. Agree?

  5. Have to agree. Lockdown would make sense but who really knows with Bayformers

    1. Grimlock, a Pteranodon (later named as Strafe), Hound, Drift, Lockdown and Galvatron were rumored to appear in AoE. Even though we don't know if some these names are actually production names, we now that know all of them will appear, but Galvatron is the only one whose alternate mode remains unknown. Some believe that either he or Cyclonus could be either the Freightliner truck or a Cybertronian jet. Or some think that they're same character with one of those names being only a production name.

  7. Something tells me the movie is going back in time and possibly to the present. Why else explain Sam or the remaining characters not in it? Transformers are supposed to be in disguise and we all know how that happened after the 1st- 2nd & 3rd movie. Mark my words- that's why the change in Optimus and the rest of the gang.

I still have the feeling, Tyrese can come back in TF5, that the new cast come across him somewhere and that he can help, just like in DOTM, bc he has experience in dealing with TF.
Tyrese is a popular actor and could work very well together on screen with Wahlberg, so they could want him back. Some actors are cast bc of their popularity, just like Wahlberg is now.

  10. I'm really ready to see how they are going to explain this. You just can't act like it never happened or touch on it briefly. These things need to be explained.

  11. Asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was Unicron's "planet" form. Asteroid the size of Rhode Island this time, instead of planet sized. He's "dead", Primus killed him 65 million years ago.

Dinobots: The "transformers" that Unicron's body was populated with, similar to Primus' cybertronians. Some of them followed their God to Earth millions of years ago, reformatted to anything they could still find alive here when they found where he landed, but went offline since their source of life was gone.

Death of Primus in Earth's atmosphere as well as the dissemination of All Spark Energy from the first movie let loose tons of energy.

Some of this energy is captured in relics, the "Matrixes" of the Dinobots and where their life source comes from. The relics were empty since the Dinobots had been dormant so long. They're essentially Unicron's version of the Matrix, able to revive dead unicronians.

This is what Wahlberg's character finds, one of those relics, and it's active now.

Meanwhile, the Autobots have been forced into hiding by a rogue human organization, which is being supplied and aided by Lockdown.

Other relics have been found by the evil human character and funneled to China, where they were used to re-animate/imbue sparks to Chinese created transformers, which are pieced together from what remained of the Decepticons. Lockdown has been key in aiding the human to do this as well as locating the relics. These Chinese Decepticons are tainted with Unicron's energy and extra powerful - as well as having the ability to combine. Each is armed with a relic, and the relics combine to form Menasor's weapon as well. The program to revive these Decepticons is portrayed as being the responsibility of the evil rogue American businessman (since China would sensor the film if the actual Chinese government were portrayed as responsible.)

Wahlberg's final relic is lost to Lockdown, and it is used to re-animate what is left of Megatron's body. It is Megatron's personal weapon, but he's Galvatron now.

Prime and the Autobots have been on a hunt as well, locating the original recipients of Unicron's energy, long lifeless, aboard Lockdown's ship. Lockdown had located them but not revived them as they were not Decepticons and obviously extremely powerful. Prime uses the Matrix to re-animate them and because of this they are feral but not evil. The plant/warehouse where the Decepticons were being re-animated is revealed to be Lockdown's ship, cloaked, which Prime disables when he boards it, keeping it from transforming and taking off.

Big battle ensues. Galvatron leads the Stunticons against Prime, the Autobots and the Dinobots.

Movie ends with the Decepticons defeated but not destroyed, and Prime decides to leave the planet, as he realizes that the presense of the Matrix and the release of Allspark energy revived more than the Dinobots - Primus' old enemy is stirring deep in the ocean where he's been buried for millions of years, not completely dead, and Prime leaves on Lockdown's ship to locate what is left of Cybertron to see if he can use the matrix to revive Primus. The End

    1. Perhaps almost believable story except for the Stunticons. I know some of the vehicles seen during filming gave that idea, but I don't believe we'll see them.

  19. I grew up on G1. I don't get the big fuss on needing all G1 characters in it. As good as it was there are a lot of other good characters in other generations
