Transformers: Age of Extinction Tracking for $100 Million Opening

Paramount and Hasbro must be grinning ear to ear as it seems the slow rollout followed by a deluge of TV spots has paid off. The Hollywood Reporter indicates the movie is on track for one of the biggest openings of the year (so far) at around $100 million for its opening weekend in the United States. It is expected to also do extremely well overseas but no specific numbers were provided. The other three movies also opened well but their opening skey heavy due to all of them enjoying essentially a five day launch due to early premieres. So far all indications are that Transformers 4 will stick with the Thursday 8pm opening that most other movies have been doing this year. The goal is to surpass Transformers: Dark of the Moon's worldwide gross of $1.123 billion by the time it leaves theaters. Also slipped into the article is an indication that the film cost $200 million-plus, much higher than a previous report of $165 million.

  3. Dudemus: I hate to be the bearer of bad news on the marketing front, however. If I were anymore correct and precise at what I had expected of this A.O.E storyline, I would be a prophet...as I had expected and stated 8n previous months that this line will suffer on the retail market has come to pass. Sadly it had lower first month sale projection than the DOTM line. So with that it's worst than I had expect yet I'm not surprised. I'll have to continue this later. But stay tuned to this sight. It really interesting. And I base my opinion on my expert knowledge of the marketing process.

  4. I know this is off topic and all and very old... but how come Jazz died by being ripped into tow pieces, yet Frenzy is left with only a head and is able to still live and transform?

    1. i think frenzy was so scrawny all hit "vitals" were in his head. But more than likely just your standard indifference by directors and writers to making sense. That or we are supposed to assume Megatron "extinguished" Jazz's spark off-screen with an extra stab or something.

  5. Dudemus: here's the latest. Hasbro has been reported as saying, the reason why the sales has wanged is due too over saturation. In reference to producing different array of classes for one character:ex. How many different classes did they produce for Drift? Battlers-one step changers-deluxe-and a voyager class from an old mold from DOTM,etc. There are just too many versions and when this happens it is called "Action Figure Fatigue" when perhaps more than likely the average collector will choose one. Do I believe this is the case?...well, it does have credence, yet. It only amount to a small percentage of sales. Overall the basic classes out sale the other subclasses. I had previously stated that this toyline will have moderate sales, and again I was correct. What I didn't expect was this line would have meager sales than the DOTM line. My take on the reasons why?...it's simple. Hasbro does not want to admit that marketing target and the way of the new design by way of the targeting is at fault. I still have very good constituencies in their marketing department. Now with that being said let me make some points on where they went wrong. 1: putting product on the shelves in Canada before it's scheduled release in the U.S. what happened here was social media, these figures were put on display for the world to see and even worst, decide to not purchase the product. Bad online reviews,in hand figures had killed the anticipation before it had a chance. Possible buyers were turned off at the look of the vehicles. 2: targeting the younger market specifically: in doing this they lost their hard core base fans and collectors of this toyline. Now for all its worth, the what for the most part Hasbro will dispute...this simpler transformation approach. It was by far the worst mistake they've made in this line. Not only does this approach become boring to children as I had learned, it also came at a disappointment to true collectors so you lose out on both fronts. For Hasbro has again forgotten basic principles when it comes to marketing transformers. This isn't transformers from cartoons this is transformers for the big screen. They are two different marketing brackets. For one the movie is to attract about and children alike....so what should that tell you?...you should use the same basic marketing approach to an extent. You have to conclude that the transformers are 30yrs in the making and is a part of American cartoon history, and many of the fans today are the fans from 30yrs ago who have children and they count. Why? Simple. If they do not feel that the product they want to spend money on isn't worth it or is to some point up to their standards they will be hard pressed to purchase this product for their child. Sorry, that's just the way you have to think in this business. You have to take account of all spectrums of sales. The simpler approach did not work and the slow start at retail is the absolute indicator. As for the future waves?....do not be surprised if it has the same turn out as the DOTM. Discontinuations. If the sea does not pick up during the next upcoming wave get your overseas orders prepped up, because it will be the only place you will be able to get your hands on them...again,sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
