Peter Cullen Wants Bay for Transformers 5

In a brief interview with CinemaBlend, Peter Cullen (voice of Optimus Prime) said he is hoping that Michael Bay will return to direct Transformers 5.

"I have a great deal of respect for him. He generates a great deal of excitement and energy. He's really a hands-on director. My son is a stunt man and worked in Chicago doing a lot of the driving sequences...he said he's a very, very diligent, hands-on guy. He creates a great deal of energy and puts everybody on their toes. I would certainly miss him. I think he's brilliant, his mind is unbelievable. Michael if you're [reading] this, I certainly hope you are coming back."

"It would be very difficult me to express any of the future on Transformers, but certainly the excitement that it's generated of where it could possibly go is up to anybody to figure out. I don't have access to any of that information."

Bay has indicated he is considering not directly Transformers 5 but so far there has been no official announcement one way or the other. Hasbro and Paramount want the next film in theaters by 2016 so it seems that all involved will have to make a decision by the end of the year as pre-production on the films have to start a good six months before principle photography begins and often even with a good lead time finishing all the effects before the release date has been a rush to the finish line so the more time Bay and Paramount take to make a decision the less likely they can hit make that target.

On a somewhat related note since interview was to promote next week's release of Age of Extinction on Blu-ray, here is a video with a brief appearance by Cullen as press get to drive the expensive sports cars from the movie.

  1. Oh God I hope Bay doesn't come back for the 5th one. First, he needs to drop flip flopping. He needs to just let it go. Secondly, he may be a hands on director with a lot of energy, but his vision for Transformers is terrible. Not just him of course, they need new writers, too. Preferably people who actually used to watch Transformers when they were young.

  2. A big middle finger to all you G1 kids who can't move on from the 80's.

  3. Bay's vision of Transformers is fantastic and amazing and thank god Cullen sees that as well. If Optimus himself wants Bay to come back for TF5, then whiny geewunners need to grow up, get their asses out of the 80's and accept that not everyone wants G1 non-stop.

  4. Agreed. Personally, I grew up with G1 and love the era but Bayformer's has been spectacular. I will admit the writer's do need to step it up a bit though. Bay himself though, has been amazing though along with ILM,stuntmen and seasoned voice actors like Peter Cullen.

  5. I think Michael Bay is fine for Transformers. The problem here is the writer. Sometimes, a change is needed and it's correcto to continue making changes but, they need some story teller with fresh ideas. Last TF film could've been 100% perfect if the story wouldn't have been so poor and lazzy.

  6. Why don't they just hire Alan Dean Foster as the only screenwriter ? His novels for Transformers movies were way better than the scripts for the movies. He surely is the best writer the franchise got for a while. Unfortunately Hasbro/Paramount paid him for writing the official novels only.
But he should be paid to write the movie scripts instead.
