Linkfest - Merry Christmas

Finally got around to playing catch-up on the latest in Transformers toy news. Upcoming toys include Capbots (transforming plastic ball caps), tease of the Beast Hunters line, look at Kre-O combiners, discount info on TF Prime toys, new 3rd party toy, and TF video game info. Also have video reviews Fall of Cybertron Grimlock & Starscream, MP Sideswipe & Red Alert, and more. This will be the last link fest of 2012 but next year is looking great with lots of great Hasbro toys in the pipeline including Transformers Prime Beast Hunters, more Fall of Cybertron and Generations toys. Third party makers have hinted at around 3 separate combiners (not Aerielbots, Dinobot combiner, and Throttlebot combiner) along with a bunch of more G1 homages. Takara has MP Soundwave coming and who knows what other creative twists they have in store of us. Over all next year is looking very good for Transformers and that is not even counting Transformer 4 that should start filming in late Spring.

Capbots Gallery
Yep plastic baseball caps that turn into Captimus Prime and Capticon. Still annoyed missed out the the Nike Shoeformers (plastic shoes that transformed) so went ahead and ordered without waiting on review like normally do. They are available now for around $26.

Linkfest - TF Legends

This linkfest brings you a little bit of info on two new video games (one mobile, one for Wii U), Digital Domain bankruptcy, TFs on your street, transforming furniture, real life transforming car, new take on Unicron, a mobile card game and an amusing repaint. For videos we have an amusing new Kre-O commercial, a not Devastator stop motion video, reviews of MP Thundercracker, Bruticus, Dreadwing and more.

Transformers Prime The Video Game for Wii U Dated
Nintendo has officially announced the release date of the Wii U for North America as November 18, 2012 with a price of $350 (there is a $299 model but no point in getting that one). One of the official launch games will be Transformers Prime The Video Game (also be Wii, DS, and 3DS versions). Oddly the listed release date is November 13, 2012 with retail price of $49.99. The game lets you play as various TF Prime characters in 3rd person action in a new single player storyline or multiplayer action.

Digital Domain Files for Bankruptcy
The company that James Cameron (Avatar) created and Michael Bay once owned a stake in (but sold off more than three years ago) has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company created visual special effects for the three Transformers films, Apollo 13, Titanic, The Fifth Element, Star Trek: Nemesis, Tron: Legacy, Avatar, X-Men: First Class and host of others. Upcoming films they are set to work on (for now anyway) are Ender's Game, Jack the Giant Killer and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The cause for the financial problems does not seem to be known except that the bankruptcy was initiated because it was in default on its loans. A public auction to sell the company is set for September 21st with Searchlight Capitol indicating it will bid $15 for it. The speed to deal with the bankruptcy is due to studios threatening to pull their films to give other studio effects companies’ time to complete any visual effects.

SDCC 2012 Day 1: Hasbro Brand, IDW Panels, FoC Preview

The official Day 1 of the 2012 San Diego Comic Con has drawn to a close (Day 0 | TF Schedule). This is probably the busiest day for Transformers fans as Hasbro and IDW held their panels to talk about their latest products while High Moon Studios was busy showing off multi-player mode for War for Cybertron. As a result, this post is very long. For me the main highlights was the FoC Grimlock toy and learning that Masterpiece Thundercracker is based on the new (better) Starscream mold. Pretty much a link = gallery of images about that particular subject. Let us know what you think of all the new stuff revealed.

Hasbro: Transformers Brand Panel
Fall of Cybertron
- Relaunching Generations in 2013 with at least 40 news toys
- Ruination: Repaint of Bruticus with Impactor, Twin Twist, Top Spin, Roadbuster
- Legends Cassettes: Eject, Rewind, Ramhorn, Laserbeak
- Voyager: Grimlock, Blaster with Steeljaw (Soundwave repaint)

Linkfest - TF Exclusives

Below are more links and info on upcoming Transformers toys and news from the last week or so. This editoin has info Takara's Masterpiece line, Maketoys shows off completed not Devastator, Masterpiece seekers are coming stateside, Beast Wars on Netflix, new galleries and video reviews of Perfect Effect's not Arcee and Transformers: The Ride Evac.

Masterpiece Sideswipe Prototype
To the right is the prototype to the next new addition to Takara's Masterpiece line. MP-12 Lambor (Sideswipe) will have the alt mode of a Lamborghini just as he was in the G1 days. Even better it seems Volkswagen has signed off on the alt mode which means the details will hopefully represent a real world vehicle. Something that is oddly rare outside of the movie toys. Indications are the figure will be in scale to Masterpiece Prime 2.0 to about Prime's chest. This move to create a scaled line for the first time is pretty awesome. Now if only the new MP toys came out at a faster pace. The figure is around $90 and will be released in late October. I assume it will eventually make its way stateside as an exclusive but no telling how long that will take. Red Alert (white repaint) will likely follow a few months later. The next Masterpiece figure (MP-13) will be Soundwave and MP-14 will be announced at the International Tokyo Toy Show next weekend.

Maketoys Yellow Giant Gallery
The not Devastator combiner from Maketoys will finally be completed once the final C set is released later this summer. At the link is a gallery of the final product. The yellow edition is a nod to the Generation 2 re-release of the Constructions with a green repaint box set coming up by the fall.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron E3 Teaser, Pre-Order Bonuses

E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, starts on June 5th. The three day Expo is used by the video game industry to launch their next years’ worth of products. Expected reveals includes lots of games, useful details on Nintendo Wii U, and possibly next gen announcements from Sony and Microsoft (but those just rumors). Spike TV and GameTrailers have posted the below Transformers: Fall of Cybertron teaser trailer of their E3 coverage that begins on Monday June 4th. I am sure High Moon Studios will be there so will likely see lot more game footage of the game starting next week.

Linkfest - Generations

Time for another linkfest summarizing the latest in new regarding Transformers. This edition has a look at the concept art for Ironhide, video and galleries of next wave of toys including Transformers: Generations, another Fall of Cybertron Bruticus box set, Cobra Commander crossed with Soundwave, four TF: Prime toy reviews, a stunt award of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, a real life transformers, and more.

Transformers: Prime Ironhide Concept Art
TF Prime artist Ken Christiansen has posted his concept art for Ironhide. At the post he writes about his approach to the character. The result is a pretty "bad ass Ironhide" that seems to combine the classic G1 touches with the physical impressive look of the movie version. While the character has yet to be confirmed as appearing in the TV series, Hasbro has made a Commander class figure that will be coming out soon. A deluxe version is in the works but Kup gets first crack at the mold in release order. (via Seibertron)

Botcon 2012 Display Videos
Hit the link for 10 videos that show off all the products that Hasbro had on display at Botcon a few weeks ago. Most are scheduled for release this year with Generations coming out next Spring.

Linkfest - Botcon Regeneration

Another week, another linkfest. This week's edition is a mixed bag with pics on Maketoys Green Giant, a look back at the origins of Transformers, gallery of TF Prime Starscream, comic stuff, Botcon news, WST Sixshot, DVD releases, and more.

MakeToys not Devastator in Green
Hit the link for Set "B" of Giant which is their 3rd party version of Devastator. Up to now the company has been releasing yellow homages to Generation 2 repaints but later this year they plan on releasing a gift set of all six figures in the more classic green paint scheme. The price is around $350 and expected to be released in June.

History of Transformers Translation
Hit the link for TFW2005's translation with two of the architects of Transformers. Hideaki Yoke and Koujin Oono talk about the origins of Transformers from more than 25 years ago as they discuss the various design and story aspects that helped create the Transformers franchise we all love today.

Transformers Linkfest - Speaking Of

The holidays are near and that makes me think of fun holiday things like Transformers toy. Hasbro may have bigger plans in the works for the Transformers: Prime line at least judging by a single picture. Also making plans is various 3rd party transformer makers with more images of previously known figures like not Devastator, not Shockwave, and not The Fallen. There are links to an Autobot Ukulele, articles on re-issues, and a look at not Sixshot. In the video department, we have a Kre-O commercial, TF book commercial and two reviews of two more not Constructicons. On the not so merry side there is also a potential PR nightmare for Hasbro if the mainstream media gets bored and looks into a report on one of their Chinese Transformer factories but in the meantime they are suing Asus.

Transformers: Prime - Robots in Disguise Bumblebee
Based on the image above, it seems the successor to the Transformers: Prime First Edition mini-line is ready to go called "Robots in Disguise" line with red colored package (personally I like the First Edition blue more). The deluxe Bumblebee seems to be a new mold. At this point I am a bit confused about the whole Prime line as far as what is being released when with what type of package (blue or RID red) but I assume the goal is to have a strong prescense on the toy aisles in time for the second season launch in Feburary. A leaked list of potential RID figures include deluxe Skywarp and Ratchet.

Transformers: Universe Teaser Trailer, New Info

As part of its participation at the 2011 New York Comic-Con, Jagex, and the makers of Transformers: Universe released a new teaser trailer (below), provided artwork and participated in a panel. They also have a chance for fans to vote (or suggest) a class name for the Autobots and Decepticons. Voting closes at 6pm EST today. Site to vote is here.

On the information front, a few details were revealed during the panel about the multiplayer online game. The game will be browser based (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc), using Java programming language and be available for free. No indication of how money will be made but sure ads and micro-transactions (paying for some equipment, upgrades, etc) will play a part. Since Java based, this could mean that tablets (iPad, etc) and smartphones will be able run the game but that could depend on how character and menu controls are handled in game. Not entirely sure but I think that consoles (PS3, Wii, 360) and handheld games (PSP, Gameboy) could also run the game if Jagex chooses to go in that direction.

Transformers: War for Cybertron Sequel Announced

Thanks to GameInformer Magazine, the sequel to Transformers: War for Cybertron has officially been revealed. Called Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, the story continues to follow the Cybertronian civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons moving along later in the time line to events that lead to the trek that eventually brings the battle to Earth. The website has currently only offered teaser images of the two covers of the issue that is hitting newsstands on October 14th, 2011. The game is currently penciled in for a Fall 2012 release but that is subject to change. GameInformer has a Fall for Cybertron page to reveal information over the next month here.

Transformers Linkfest

Time for another linkfest of Transformers news. It remains heavy on third party Transformers with a mix of G1 past and a new teaser for the Transformers Universe MMORPG coming next year.

Fansproject Heavylabor Teaser
The next vehicle in the Hercules (Devastator) set has been teased. The dump truck Heavylabor (aka Long Haul) will be the torso and hips once all the figures are out later in 2012. The estimated release date for the $100 figure is September 2011.

Transformers Video Games Stuff

A few Transformers video games stuff has popped up today. Activision has released a press release for yesterday's release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon The Game while the voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, did his part to promote the game to USA Today. In addition Jagex, makers of the Transformers Universe MMO, released their Botcon teaser video, screensaver and concept art. From the Cullen interview:
"Doing the movie or the animated series, there's a plot and character development and a sense of continuous feeling of one kind or another," Cullen explains. "But in the game, you're one-on-one with an individual, and the lines are quick one-liners oftentimes, and maybe some advice now and then. Basically, it's a one-on-one mental intimacy with the player. That is much different than being involved as a spectator watching a film or a show."

Botcon 2011 Day 3 Linkfest

Day 3 of Botcon 2011 has concluded in Pasadena, California and it seems to have been a good day with panels from Hasbro and Activision among others. The Hall of Fame ceremony was held with Beast War's Waspinator revealed to be the fan choice for inductee. Also lots more Transformers toy pictures from all eras and upcoming exclusives. As was with Day 1 & 2 post, if you see a link, probably worth clicking.

Hall of Fame Goodie Bag
A look at the freebies given to those that attended the Hall of Fame ceremony. Nothing major, just advertisements and the like but worth a moment to click through.

Hasbro Panel
Lots of info on the next six months or so of toy releases that Hasbro has in the pipeline. Hit the link for specifics but a few highlights include Ironhide getting a G1 inspired red repaint, a Cyberverse Battle Pack with Bumblebee and Barricade that was inspired by the D.C. police accident with Bumblebee, and Generations line will continue. As for as Kre-0, will be 28 "Kreons" at launch which is sometime this Summer. Transformers: Prime will be released on 12/1/11 with Deluxe Cliffjumper, Voyager Optimus Prime, Voyager Bulkhead, and others.

Botcon 2011 Day 1 & 2 Linkfest

The official Transformers Convention, called Botcon, is going on this weekend at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California from June 2nd to June 5th. The convention is similar to a comic book one only it is about all things Transformers with dealer rooms, panels and more. Expected panels include most of the voice cast from Transformers: Prime, Hasbro introducing their TF: Prime toys and upcoming plans and Michael Bay accepting his entry into the Transformers Hall of Fame. I wouldn't even be surprised if he shows up with exclusive clips that sadly the rest of may not get to see.

Sadly I could not afford to go but luckily other Transformers sites could and they have posted lots of pictures and videos from the first two days. Below are those that grabbed my attention especially Kre-O which is bigger and better than expected. In addition get a first look at the Transformers: Prime toys, info on the upcoming TF MMORPG, lots of galleries, look at the Hall of Fame displays, and lot more. If you see a link, probably worth clicking it.

Kre-O Transformers Gallery
Hasbro's new answer to Lego. If the large gallery at the link is any indication, the result could be pretty awesome. My favorite aspect is the TF version of the Lego mini-figs, especially the Botcon exclusive Optimus Prime. Taking a page from Lego, human size creations have also been built for display purposes. Based on the images the release date for the line is July-August 2011 and will not just be based on DOTM but also Generation One.

Worldwide Transformers MMO Planned

A while back a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on Transformers was announced by China's NetDragon that was planned only for the Asian market (Japan, China, etc). According to Joystiq, the rest of the world will get a Transformers MMORPG to play thanks to the United Kingdom's Jagex. The only real bit of information is that Hasbro has signed an agreement to create the game for North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand for launch in 2012. According to Kotaku, they learned via Jagex's PR department that the game will be "partly on Transformers Prime ...though is said the feature characters from Generation One and other Transformers universes. Past that no information was provided so questions like how it will be implemented, story, and so forth will have to remain unanswered for now. I get a sneaking suspicion that the recent DC Universe Online game will help provide the template on how the game details will be worked out. (via TFW2005, thanks to Sahara for link)

Hasbro Details Video Game Plans

Hasbro held its "Investors Day" conference call that highlighted some of their upcoming Transformers related projects for the next year or so. TFormers provided the highlights of the call. Many of them we already could guess with a toy line for Dark of the Moon and the "Ultimate Transformers Experience" theme ride that is being built for Universal Parks with Singapore debut of 2011 and Hollywood in 2012. The conference call also verified that three video games are planned around Transformers.

One of them is Transformers Online, an MMORPG that is currently limited to China and other countries in that region for a 2011 release but may be ported for other countries (which ones not detailed). Activision is also working on Transformers: Dark of the Moon game for release around the time of the movie. For those that found the movie related games lacking will be pleased to know that War for Cybertron 2 is scheduled for 2012 release. Thanks to NHLfan for the link.

TF: G1 Awkening Review

Kotaku.com has posted a quick review of the iPhone game Transformers: G1 Awakening that was released a few weeks ago. Main reason for bringing this back up though is Glu has released a free demo version of the game to give you a chance to decide if its worth your $5. Click here to learn more about the free version.
Loved
Fan Service – Anyone who holds the original Transformers as the pinnacle of the franchise is in for a treat here. The game looks and sounds like it fell right out of 1985, with the transforming sound, original character designs, even the bios you used to find on the back of the toy boxes. Best of all? The battle animations, which render the opposing characters in full 3D, and for an iPhone game, look great.

Autobot Strategist – This insistence on being a true Transformers experience carries over into the game design, and actually works in the title's favour. You're only ever in control of a handful of units at any given time, and each unit is normally a specialist, so it really pushes your tactical thinking. Ratchet is the game's only medic, for example, so you need to think carefully where you're going to send him, as you can't just build another one to complement him. And if you do need to call in reinforcements to swell your ranks a little? Well, Autobot city Metroplex is always on-hand to serve as a mobile base, able to call in reinforcements like Ironhide, Sideswipe, Prowl and Grimlock.

Hated
It's A Mobile Game – Awakening is a port of a 2008 mobile phone game, and it shows. Glorious battle sequences aside, the game's presentation is poor, especially the animation of units on the main battle screen, where in robot mode the characters don't even move. They just shuffle around, legs immobile. For a license like this on a more powerful platform like the iPhone, it could have done with a little extra work.
