Frank Welker Will Be Megatron?

IESB.net is reporting that multiple studio sources are reporting that Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron, man of crapload of voices, could be days away from signing the contract that will have him reprise his role as the voice of Megatron. Frank would join fellow Transformers G1 alumni Peter Cullen creating the voice matchup that fans and the movie producers have been pushing for.

But before you get your hopes up, other sources also where indicating that Hugo Weaving, from Lord of the Rings and Matrix films, was also being considered to voice the iconic villain. Considering the $150 million dollar budget of the film and a cast of unknowns, Hugo could add a little star wattage to the film to help in its promotion to those who don't know what Transformers are.

No date on when final casting will be announced but here is hoping it will be soon to put the speculation out of its misery.

  1. Hugo did a great job in V as well....but I don't think that he's Megatron material....that's just my opinion anyway.

  2. The matrix guy would be kinda cool, not quite frank welker cool, but why not cast him as other voices??? He's got a good bad guy voice.

  3. It's hard for me to picture G1 Megatron's voice to be coming out of the images we have seen of the Live Action Megatron. Maybe a new voice would better suite him? But as a fan, I really want Frank Welker but it won't be the same cause Megatron won't have the Transformer Mullet.

  4. From what I've read, Megs is only in the last few minutes of the film so I don't think it'll matter who gets cast. There's not a lot of voice time for this guy.

  6. According to IMDB.com, Frank Welker is no longer 'rumoured' to to be cast as a voice-talent... he is now 'stated' as being already cast as the voice of Megatron... in the same way Cullen is cast as Prime.

Don't know reliable this is but for the past few months Welker was listed as 'rumoured' and now all of a sudden he's just listed as cast... seems like he may have follwed suit and fancied re-igniting his battles with Cullen, who knows.

I agree though, I can't see Welker's voice being suitable for Megatron's new... body (can't think of anything else suitable to describe it), yet I don't see Weaving as suitable replacement either... I just don't think his voice talents are sinister enough.

We'll just have to wait and see.

  8. Personally, I think it's more important that Jazz and Ratchet's voice talents from G1 are brought back. Seeing as Bumblebee's voice has been made redundent, we need some nostalgia! And as for Ironhide, wasn't it Cullen who voiced him anyway? I'm sure it wouldn't be too much trouble for him to record the few (if any) lines IH has (from reading the script... I can't see where Ironhide even plays a part in the movie!). We need to see some sort of design/robot-form for him... just to assure us that he actually does play a part in the movie!

  9. Ironhide is Prime's muscle. Muscle doesn't need to be characterized in this movie, and if you've read the script most of the Robots are just that, Robots. The writters were more worried about making the human's human than the autobots. Check out what they say in this month's Toyfare magazine. Here's a quote:

"TOYFARE: What's the challenge of updating these characters for the 21st century?
Alex Kurtzman: It was less a matter of updating the characters...that we grew up with. The challenge for us was more in figuring out what the human storyline was gonna be, b/c you know in the cartoons and in the comics, the human characters were the least of what the stories were about."

Q: Do you want to know why the human characters were the least of what the stories were about Alex Kurtzman, destroyer of Transformers?

A: Because the f-ing Autobots and Decepticons are a better story than any human storyline. That's why transformers have been around for over 20 years.

These 2 jackasses are credited for writting what I consider to be the 2 worst movies in recent memory: The Island(Bay), and MI: 3. Both Sucked!! Transformers will need a miracle to make it more than a popcorn flick.
