Writers Talk Transformers 2 Action and Comedy

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman dicussed tone and balancing the action and humor of the sequel with SciFi Wire. Thanks to DeceptiFreak for the link.
...the sequel remains tonally consistent with their first giant-robot movie. Early teasers suggest a darker or more somber tone, but the writers said that is only one element of the new story.

"Actually, I think you'll find that it has all the same tone of the first movie," Kurtzman said in an exclusive interview on Thursday night in Hollywood, where he sat on a panel at the Paley Festival on his Fox series Fringe. "The story's a little smoother, and it's a little bit darker, so it does dip in there a little bit, but it has all the same humor, if not more than the first movie."

If the first Transformers shifted between action and comedy with some darker undertones, Orci thought the duo did an even better job balancing those elements the second time around. "I think it's a little smoother, actually," Orci said. "We had the first movie for practice. So we were able to hone in on the tone a little bit more sharply in focus on the second movie."

One of the spectacles visible in the teaser is a scene in which a transforming robot brings down an entire factory. The writers hinted at the consequences of that event. "It could be a trap, that scene," Orci teased.

  2. Ummm...I'm not seeing this 'transforming robot that brings down an entire factory'. Is he referring to the series of shots where 'Demolishor' is destroying helicopters and bridges? Or am I just completely unobservant?

I would have preferred MORE darkness in the tone of ROTF, rather than 'dipping into it a little bit'.

I'm fine with some humour, as long as it has it's place in the story, doesn't stop the plot, or is over-the-top (ex. Sam being interrogated by the drug-cop, Bumblebee lubricating', etc.) Hopefully, the truly do BALANCE the humour.

What do you think he means by "It could be a trap"?

  4. The trap refers to a spoiler to indicate that giant Autobot plane that accidentally transform inside of the factory.

  5. I'm not sure what he's talking about when he says "it could be a trap, that scene" but it sounds interesting.

    @TylerMirage

The humor is going to be there just like the first movie. We have already seen it with the Bumblebee scene so we're just going to have to deal with it. No biggie to me.

  7. To Mcat:

Yes, I realize that the Bumblebee scene was for humour, but it could also be relevant too. (My theory) Bumblebee could genuinely feel sad about not being able to go with Sam, and feel that his 'guardian' duties are over with, and this MAY cause a rift in their relationship. But, Bumblebee will eventually get to go with Sam, and their relationship will be strengthened throughout the film, etc.

As I said before, humour is great (if it is not to ridiculous, and if it serves a purpose later)and if it doesn't take away from the film, but actually adds to it, making it more enjoyable.

Maybe the 'trap' Orci is referring to IS the Demolishor thing. Maybe Demolishor is on a rampage to draw the Autobots out? YOur thoughts?

  8. It could be that as time passes, the decepticons grow wise to the Autobots hunting them, and they lead them to the constructicon(s). the essentially set a trap. Sideways could very well have been the bait. That is assuming that chase is part of the same thing.

  9. agree with the demolishor thing, the preview chapter was kind of leading up to the fact something bigger than normal was there.

but f course, that could just be demolishor himself.
