Transformers 3 Returning to "Core Mythology"?

Last week MTV spoke with Michael Bay about Transformers 3 and this week its Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner who revealed what sounds like a back to basics for the Transformers franchise. From the article:
"You’re going to see that great core mythology brought to the fore, and Michael is hard at work at making this a reality and we’re very excited about it," the series executive producer and Hasbro head Brian Goldner told MTV News. "I mean, I think it’s a great time to put it out in 2011 and we’re very excited about the movie."

"What we’re really doing is getting back to some of the core character development and storytelling. And I think there’s some elements of the core story that the filmmakers, Michael in particular wanted to tell," Goldner explained. "He’s really well-versed in the Transformers lore. So I think you’ll see, you know, less bedlam, more characters."
So far "characterization" seems to be the key word here, how that goal translates into a script and then a movie should be interesting to see.

  2. Everyone has been saying they want character development and it seems Bay has maybe listened to those people. Although, while I do welcome it, I don't want scenes like the forest battle from ROTF sacrificed. I want the Transformers to have A LOT more screen time, involving character development, the history of the Transformers and fight scenes. I don't want the 3rd movie just be 2 hours of Optimus sitting round a campfire telling us all about the history of Cybertron and everyone's personality.

  3. @3/01/2010 6:55 PM-I agreed. I definitely want fight scenes like the forest battle in TF3. What I read in the article sounds good, but I hope that translate well when the movie comes out.

  4. I feel I must repeat this point, because it does not seem to be sinking in: FIRE IS NOT A CHARECTER!

  6. I wonder if it's possible that the 3rd movie will be a sequel that becomes a prequel, similar to that reflected in the supposed leaked TF3 script a few months back, with the whole rip in the space time continuum thing?

I wouldn't be too excited about the idea though of seeing the characters in their earlier G1 looking forms on earth, as was described in the leaked script, but it would be potentially interesting to go back in time and see Cybertron before it fell and the struggle to save it from the Decepticons.

It would also be a good way to bring in some really great characters that haven't been seen in the movie franchise yet, such as Shockwave, Omega Supreme, and Wheeljack.

I would also really like to see Megatron reformatted into Galvatron. After all his body took a pretty good beating on Earth in the last battle. It's time for Megatron to be reborn stronger and more sinister.

  7. Mmmmh.. what if the leaked treatment script for Transformers3 that was immediately marked as a fake actually done by no one really knows who... was actually not a fake but just a first draft version of the actual script that will be that of the movie? What if by returning to "core mythology" statement they are actually hinting to the time travel part of that leaked marked as fake script? What if that would mean that going back in time in the '80s would simply mean that viewers and general public will see Transformers turning into bulkier, more blocky versions of themselves like the G1 anime and that is the "core mythology" ?
It might all be a clever viral marketing thing... think about it.. I wouldn't surprised at all.
The time travel back in time idea is pretty cool and it could work perfectly if done right. That leaked script had some issues to be sorted out and it lacked a major element that I hope to see in the movie that could complete it and give something new and darker to the general public like: maybe Chicago being a giant Decepticon full of Pretenders where experiments on Humans being tortued were happening.. people disappeared... and so on...

  8. haha I hear ya, if all I see is a buncha talkin' robots just standing around preaching about Cybertron and the eons of peace and prosperity, I guarantee everyone's gonna walk out. It'll be BORING!

So you have to blend in a healthy dose of action and adventure (obviously) and some humor here and there.

But putting in more of this core mythology probably means to me some visually stunning landscapes and characters (through battles) that really tell the story of how the Transformers came to be and how it might end.

  9. What went wrong with transformers 2 is that it become a mindless action movie, no character development and all that. If you look at the approach of Avatar, it is methodical and deliberate storytelling with action elements that is really into the story like in Transformers 1. The action picked up really well at the last 40 mins. They need to eliminate the soldiers, it doesnt make sense to me that they can kick robots ass with conventional weapons.

  10. @"Anonymous 3/02/2010 12:29 AM"---Avatar is a silly pathetic nonsense childish fairy tale with useless void characters and cartoonish cheap CGI. No soldiers on Transformers movies ? You must be kidding. Anyway the electromagnetic gun you see on Transformers2 is a real weapon that US Navy developed and it's going to use in the next few years...

  11. What kind of character development are we talking about? More Mudflap and Skids...... no thanks!

  12. the only development for a robot character i can think of is: let bumblebee speak, not just make some noises! at the end of part 1, he was able to talk. in the second one, back to the roots..... give him a voice!

Back to roots is the key !!

  14. Hmph. Maybe you're all taken by this ... but I'm not.
"Bay is well versed in the mythology"? My ass. Remember all that so-called mythology he said ROTF was going to have, and how all we got was a couple new characters, an iconic device (which was less about leadership and more about blowing up suns) and a robot that was dead for half the movie.
Yeah. Totally not taking any of this to heard.

  16. For all that is holy, DO NOT PUT TIME TRAVEL CRAP IN THE MOVIE. Thank you.

  17. Well, I do vote for NOT having Skids and Mudflap in the movie. But I did enjoy Wheelie! He was hilarious.

    I'm totally with you.

And what 1 anon above said, for crying out loud, let BUMBLEBEE speak!!!! Everytime I watch TF1, it gives me the chills when BB speaks: Permission to speak sir.....I wish to stay with the boy.
And while they're at it, bring Jazz back.

Definitly more character development, we hardly saw Sideswipe and Soundwave.

  20. People keep requesting MORE character development. That implies that RotF actually had SOME character development. I hate to bash anything TF, but RotF was bad, and TF1 was weak. Slick action movies, yes. But I just couldn't get into the characters. I really hoped they'd find a new director. Bay is good at blowing stuff up, but explosions do not a movie, make.

  21. i think this character development cant happened without playing a robot with a real actor.you cant direct a CGI character as well as a human.i think an actor who play a robot could be a good possibility.a real hick robot

  22. Well heres how i figure it, Unicron will be introduced but not as a major character, megatron will get upgraded to galvatron by unicron. and most of the story will revolve around that. this would allow a lot of story a character development but also good action sequences with a new and improved megatron/galvatron, leaving unicron mostly in the background

    Lets bring in the giganticons!
