Transformers: Age of Extinction Shut Out of the Oscars

For the first time a Transformers film was shut out of getting a nomination in the Oscar technical categories. After this morning's announcement of the Oscar nominations, Transformers: Age of Extinction received zero nominations in its greatest strengths of Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing. For the previous films Transformers 1 received three nominations, ROTF received one and DOTM received three. None of the films have won an Oscar. Below are the nominations this year for the categories the previous TF films has been nominated in. I would swap out Interstellar for Age of Extinction in all the categories and the Sound Mixing noms are baffling. The full list of nominations can be found here. The winners will be announced on Sunday, February 22 starting at 8pm ET in show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris whose previous hosting gigs have usually been very entertaining.

Visual Effects
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Interstellar
X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Guardians Of The Galaxy

Sound Editing
“American Sniper” Alan Robert Murray and Bub Asman
“Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” Martín Hernández and Aaron Glascock
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” Brent Burge and Jason Canovas
“Interstellar” Richard King
“Unbroken” Becky Sullivan and Andrew DeCristofaro

Sound Mixing
“American Sniper” John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff and Walt Martin
“Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño and Thomas Varga
“Interstellar” Gary A. Rizzo, Gregg Landaker and Mark Weingarten
“Unbroken” Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño and David Lee
“Whiplash” Craig Mann, Ben Wilkins and Thomas Curley

On a related note nice to see JK Simmons get some Oscar love in Best Supporting Actor category as fan of the actor for years as well as Steve Carell for Best Actor who once again proves the better the comedian the better the actor. An actor that can do comedy can usually do drama but its pretty rare that one that only does drama can do comedy. Other thoughts including finding the Best Actress category a bit nonsensical. As for as Best Movie my vote would be for The Imitation Game and hoping How To Train Your Dragon 2 wins Best Animated Film. Other then those two people and two movies, don't care how the rest shake out. Add your thoughts in the comments.

  1. The winners of the Oscars are voted by the academy members. More than half the academy members are actors. That's why every winner in any category is always a film that the average actor considers "good" (which is normally a good drama). So instead of the category being called "Best Visual Effects" it should be called "Best movie WITH Visual Effects"

Other perspective that some people have about this topic is the following: "The best VFX is the one that best serve the history", not necessarely the most groundbreaking, magic, complex, cool, etc. Since TF has no history, its VFX automatically become "crap" which I don't think is fair.

Background: I am an independent animator and I have worked in VFX for commercials.

  4. Many people are torqued about the Oscar nominations this year anyway. AoE getting shut out wasn't that much of a surprise. Sucks, though. Could've nominated it instead of "Interstellar." The movie was good, but the sound sucked, and the effects weren't that ground-breaking.

  5. To be fair Transformers didn't really do anything new that the other 3 movies haven't already done in the pass.
