Transformers: The Movie Upper Deck Sets Announced, Future Hasbro Sets Planned (Updated)

If you are into card collecting, keep an eye out in September for a new Upper Deck set featuring the 40th Anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie. The set is part of a merchandising agreement that Upper Deck signed with Hasbro to bring their various properties to trading cards and games. Future plans will including Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K. and more. 

Upper Deck has been a long time producer of sports related trading cards for decades as I know I have their cards from long ago sitting in storage somewhere but they frequently spread out to other areas like comic related cards. I think this is the first heard of toy franchise related sets. I am interpreting the press release as two Transformers related sets are coming out. One with Upper Deck branding and another with Fleer (owned by Upper Deck). Details like price and release date were not revealed.

Through this collaboration, Upper Deck will bring memorable moments and characters from Transformers, Power Rangers, G.I. The debut product through this new collaboration will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, with a special trading card set honoring the lasting impact of the beloved franchise.

Alongside the 40th Anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie in August, and the nationally celebrated “Transformers Day” on September 17, Upper Deck is releasing a Transformers 40th Anniversary Special Edition trading card set in September, which will be available exclusively at Target. The set brings the legendary Autobots and Decepticons to life through cinematic poster-inspired trading cards. Every box will include the complete base set, alongside a “Stellar System” insert series featuring fan-favorite characters against a galaxy backdrop. Fans and collectors can also chase a range of eye-catching parallels and autographed cards from Peter Cullen, the iconic voice of Optimus Prime.

Expanding the collaboration further, later this year fans can also look forward to the The Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary trading card set under Upper Deck’s iconic Fleer brand, known for its timeless trading card designs and nostalgic appeal among collectors. The 100-card base set highlights memorable characters and scenes from the film across Fleer-inspired base and parallel designs. Inserts include “From Screen to Page” themed around artwork from the 20th anniversary IDW comic series, “More Than Meets the Eye” flip lenticular cards that showcase characters in both robot mode and vehicle mode, and “Instruments of Destruction” 3D lenticular cards that highlight the Decepticons and other villains from the film. The set also features autograph cards from select voice actors.

The upcoming The Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary trading card lineup marks only the beginning of this collaboration between Hasbro and Upper Deck, with future collections inspired by Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., Jem and the Holograms, and more on the horizon.

Update: More details on the Upper Deck set is now out. Its exclusive to Target with a MSRP of $19.99 for a box or pack that contains "complete 10-card base set plus 2 additional insert cards!". A box of the cards (which probably isn't the same as the one pictured) is described as 6 cards per pack, 6 packs per box (so 36 cards per box). I cannot tell if this info means you get 6 or 12 cards for your $20 as the phrasing being used to describe these sets is as clear as mud. Release is set for sometime in September. They will probably just randomly appear on Target shelves one day. 

Checking out Upper Deck's Inspirations: The World of DC, that is a 90 card base set with a pack of 4 cards costing around $14 and a box of 12 packs is $140 (so 48 cards total). I don't think Upper Deck's Transformers box or pack of six cards will be quite that expensive but this should give you a ballpark of possible investment required to attempt to complete their 100 card base set much less trying to get all the chase cards.

No info yet on the Fleer cards but I assume that one will not be a Target exclusive which is why the press release indicated two separate sets.
