Quite frankly, the general public NEEDS a movie to GET AWAY from reality and this movie hits the mark in all ways. Not too smart, not too dumb, just right. You have to please so many different age groups from kiddies who want their bots NOW NOW NOW to fanboys who want to hear the classic sounds and transformation logics to no-nothings who just want a generally entertaining movie PERIOD.
ReplyDeleteIt helps that the movie has a new soundtrack with rock themes and electronic anthems along with the bold Bay orchestras so often used in his movies. It's an orgy of American-sized awesomeness that fills your eyes with so much visual ecstasy and mind-boggling special effects that people (for better or worse) feel the need to talk about. No one talks much about the other movies. Everyone's talking about Transformers, again for better or worse and THAT yanks the curiousity bone and engages a ticket sell right there.
The icing on the cake is that the movie is really not dumb at all. There's certianly a lot of techincal wizardry in this movie that the writers definitely covered, the military used actual equipment and vehicles in a way that was fairly realistic (again with the military recruitment theme). It panders wholeheartedly to the gutterball instinct of a BOY and his CAR and gettin' down and dirty with crazy insanity to do whatever it takes to GET THE GIRL and SAVE THE DAY. Honestly, you couldn't ask for a better film to do just that.
There are plenty of intelligent films, classy films, poignant colorful films and certianly very thought-provoking films, but this is not the time or place for them. Clearly and resoundedly this is OUR TIME. We Transformers fans waited a LONG TIME for this. We waited years and decades for our buddies to catch up. we wanted it done right and carefully and with someone who was going to make sure it would be done right and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Move over Harry Potter, Spiderman, and Disney peeps. THIS IS OUR TIME.
According to boxofficemojo.com Transformers made $29,073,898 on July 4th, not $27.9 million
