James Clyne (concept artist) and Tim Flattery (illustrator) have posted some of their concept art that they created in developing Transformers (the first movie). The detail and imagination is pretty amazing. James Clyne's work includes early head designs of various Transformers (Megatron, Bumblebee, Optimus), set designs and moments familiar from the movie. Tim Flattery's work is 15 images that seem to focus on various Decepticon attacks that look really amazing. Thanks to Chris for the finding them.

really nice stuff. At least we will have a better idea on what CG stuff to expect for TF2
ReplyDeleteDefinitely interesting, but they clearly weren't sure what to do with the faces back then. Thank Primus that Optimus, Bumblebee and Megatron didn't look like this in the movie.
ReplyDeleteTim Flattery was looking to make the Transformers look like mechanical Predator.... Thank goodness that didn't happen.
ReplyDeletebut you can also see that bay actually wanted them to draw an air craft carrier transformer. he had the one guy even draw one up
ReplyDeleteWhile the environment drawings look pretty cool, I have to seriously dissent on the character drawings. That Optimus drawing (by James Clyne) had me thinking he was gonna bust out saying, "A bleep_, A bleep_, A bleep_, That's All Folks!", LOL!!! The Bumblebee head had an abstract disneyish quality to it as well as the other head.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the irony is that James Clyne was also a conceptual artist on one of Disney's groundbreaking 80s films, TRON, which is one of my all-time favorites, and I hope the sequel coming out in 2010 will rock!!
they are amazing drawings, for adapting a cartoon into a real world i say is pretty hard, but they nailed it, even tho the early faces were off, they soon got it right
ReplyDeleteAmazing talents, But thank god the design got better
ReplyDeleteBut why is the "Prime 2" head made up of a Kawasaki ZX-10R? Prime as a bike would have been cool!
