Transformers 2 Trailer Reviewed

The Los Angeles Time's "The Big Picture" blog has posted a rather odd review from "Summer Movie Posse" which is apparently a small group of 15-17 year olds of the new Transformers 2 trailer. Apparently their group was unimpressed and found the trailer confusing. The few Transformers movie fans I have spoken to (but otherwise not Transfans) didn't convey such a problem. Anyway, figure you all would find it interesting.
But one action film got the bum's rush: Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." It bombed with the kids, who gave it one of the lowest scores of all 14 movie trailers they watched -- a 29 out of a possible 60. Even these teens, who grew up in a visually oriented world, were starved for a little more information from the trailer, which was crammed with explosions, but offered only two short lines of dialogue, one of them being the immortal "We're all going together!"

Even worse, the kids viewed the film as being something only of interest to their little brothers, which as any studio marketer will tell you, is the worst insult of all, since once the little brother hears that a movie plays too young for his big brother or sister, he won't want to see it either.

Some excerpts from their critique:
Ben Sassoon, 17: "I can't say this got my hopes up. It's just a lot of explosions."

Molly Philbin, 15: "And they only said five words in the whole trailer. I'm sure all those special effects were hard to do, but if you haven't seen the first movie, I'm not sure you'd even understand what was going on. And most of what was going on sure didn't look that good."

Jasmine Jafari, 15: "I wasn't sure I even knew what the movie was about until halfway through the trailer, and I probably know more than most people, since I have a little brother who's into Transformers. I think he'd be a lot more interested in the movie than me. It just felt pretty senseless."

Ben: "This reminds me of why I'm not a big fan of Michael Bay. He keeps making the same movie, over and over again, as if he hopes someday he'll get it right."

  6. BIG MISTAKE:

they don't talk about the new one.. why they would talk about "We're all going together!" .. it was in the Teaser.. and the Teaser hasn't any story clues...
and on the Source site, there's also the Teaser..

  7. I was really excited to see the first one, but I was disapointed. Just so much focus on humans and very hard to enjoy the robots because the camera zoomed in too close or too far away. Financially, I could understand, but as a movie alone, there was just so much wrong with it. However, even with all of its flaws, it's still acceptable. By the way the trailer looks, it looks like another acceptable movie.

  8. Seems like these are the type of kids who just want to act as old as possible. I bet they also think an R rating automatically makes a movie better.

Although i loved the trailer i do see there point. Half the trailer told the entire plot of the film and showed us the most important scenes. The other half was explosions and money shots.

Although the movie will be ultra awesome the trailer doesnt seem to do it gratitude.

I also agree a tiny bit about Bay all his movies have explosions it would be nice if he stretched out into other genres such as a comedy, horror or romance film without explosions every few minutes.

  12. This is just my honest opinion, but I believe they are raised up on Harry Potter and mostly movies based on literary fantasy which delivers more dialogue than visual effects. This is a far cry from BOOM BOOM BOOBIES stuff that is the hallmark of Summer Blockbuster. Clearly the wrong group to receive any balanced interview from.

  13. It's quite obvious that Los Angeles Times got paid by competitors to bash the Transformers franchise. And those kids got some money as well to come up with those silly sentences of theirs that someone older than them told them to say.
Teenagers claiming that there are too many explosions and such... it's the most silly and pathetic statement ever, not only it doesn't make sense, not only it's far from being true because Bay movies and Transformers2 are not just action and you need to stay focused to grasp all the little details scattered thru, not only 90-95% teenagers love explosions and well done CGI and actions BUT such a silly serie of statements it's exactly the same that competitors studio plants use to bash any Bay movies and the Transformers franchise.
Competitors fear the fact that Transformers2:ROTF it's highly likely to break the $1billion barrier and so they want to cause it flop if not bomb thru bashing and bribing

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, logic would dicate that every single one of these kids is on drugs, and not in their right mind.

"...a lot of explosions" (and hot girls, and great action, and awesome visual effects, and sweet cars, and...)

"...little information..." (It's a two minute trailer ADVERTISING the film, it's not going to give you the whole plot synopsis!)

"...five words of dialogue..." (That's not true! There's at least 25!)

Yet, with these 'horrible' reviews, the film will still make $800,000,000! Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  15. And yes I do agree, this is a Michael Bay film. I mean, what did you expect? Explosions, car chases, hot chicks. This is what he DOES.

ALL of Bay's movies have this formula and that's exactly what I want. I don't want anything LESS than that. So screw the kids, and bring on the explosions and chicks!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I loved the trailer except for the Bumbleebee scene. That scene could ruin this film along with the comedy from the kids. The problem is though that Transformers is a complex franchise and has to have a secret hard plot which cant be known till the episode or film has been aired which enevatably leads to fights and explosions which bay is great at but the build up for non TF fans will have no effect.

In all i predict that the film will be made or broken by the comedy scenes such as the Bumbleebee scene and the twins comedy act. Here is an example When Mudflap is sucked towards Devastator he says "I`m Flying" The good comedy acts of the film will be Jetfire and maybe Alice depending on how they play her reveal.

  18. @Pickleforthepeople: nonsense. So Cristopher Nolan became a myth thru and only thanks to the viral marketing campaign done by Warner Bros and the drug addict actor that committed suicide that a Batman movie can have explosions and action scenes and people claim that it has a such a deep poethic feeling and so on... while for Bay movies people just say that it's all action and there is nothing else while it's far from true?
So The Rock,Armageddon,The Island were just action and nothing else, uh?
Transformers it's a fast movie and this own might be even faster overall, which is not a bad thing at all, but it's not that there is no plot and characters development like many bashers claim. It's all there, you have to stay focused while watching to grasp everything, there are so many tiny details both visual and audio that you got to stay focused or you won't be able to follow. Bay style it's that of having the movie flowing at a fast pace and viewers must stay focused or they will simply lose a lot of details and overall picture.
Obviously there people for which an overflow of visual and audio data in their brain seems to cause a short circuit and so then they claim that there was no plot, no characters development and so on.. but the fact is that it's all there, you just need to train your brain if you can't follow properly, it's your fault.

  19. the kids are ignorant. they were dissapointed because the teaser didnt show info on the story. thats why its called a teaser. these little ideots dont know anything about movies.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know this may be a little bit off the topic, but it is relevant. When I cosplayed as Bumblebee at SDCC and Wondercon, there were so many people of ALL AGES who loved BB. I have never seen that many people enjoy TFs as much as Harry Potter costumers. MANY MANY MANY are looking forward to the movie and if the turnout of the 20 theater replay isn't proof of how excited people are then I don't know what is.

How many would turn out to see Harry Potter replayed on the big screen? Not many.

    ReplyDelete
  21. that one line they mention is really damaging, no one wants that (the OK for younger brother one.)

one thing posters need to realize is the small base of hardcore fans, its nothing compared to the rest of the world, and if you want your $300 million film to make money, thats who you need to get in the seats.

similarly Indiana Jones had the same issues, an entire generation with no point of reference to who the characters are. except of course dad saying Indy is cool.

No i mean there is no actual romance between Sam and Mikela. Sam liked her in the first film because she looked nice. She only liked him after he met the Transformers and cleared her name.

In this film it looks worse as there tiny romance has been replaced by comedy such as the Webcam chat or the Bumbleebee scene.

Though i must repeat what i said "Although i loved the trailer i do see there point. Half the trailer told the entire plot of the film and showed us the most important scenes. The other half was explosions and money shots" I am a TF fan and followed the plot on this blog but i didnt think they would so that much action and stuff before the films release.

Armageddon and The island were awesome loved the soundtracks. Can you provide an online link for the rock so i can watch it all online. (No downloads, for free please)

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Pickleforthepeople: What the heck are you talking about? No Sam and Mikaela romance? They will chat on webcam for the whole runtime?? What?? Are you serious? Did you watch the teaser, showest2009 sneak peak footage and trailer#2 ?

    1) The world is under attack and the movie is going to be more apocalyptic than Armageddon
    2) Sam and Mikaela romance and love is far from tiny, it's quite obvious that Mikaela will be in danger and will be worried by Sam that Decepticons want to capture, enslave, torture, use and abuse for their goal--which will cause Sam to be worried for Mikaela

You don't need to be a genius to get those feelings about plot and characters just by watching teaser/showest2009/trailer#2.

  25. I'm not entirely worried about what teenagers think of the film. When I was a teenager, something like that would've had my attention. Then again... I'm familiar with Transformers too. Even so... comic book movies and movies based on old toy lines always did grab my attention. Infact, the only film coming out this year in the comic book/toy line catagorys that doesn't really have my attention much anymore is G.I. Joe. And even that I might eventually get on DVD.

  30. People just have it out for action movie these days and micheal bay. To me I just dont see the point of watching a movie that tries to teach me a lesson or is about real life (unless its a comedy), I have parents and college to teach me life lessons and I live life. I thought movies were about escapism, enjoying yourself. Ive seen the final battle of transformers hundreds of times but ive only seen the Dark Knight twice, the second to see if it was as boring as I thought and it was. People loved that movie but the plot was really shit and I didnt actually care. Basically transformers, good guys vs bad guys good guys win. Dark Knight good guy uses a wired voice and doesnt have any powers but dodges bullets like magic, the bad guy doesnt get punished the bad guy that was a good guy dies. Big fuckin woop, that sad shit happens in real life. I pay to watch a movie because I want to enjoy my self.

  33. all I can say is WOW, those kids are psychotic. can't they wait for the movie before giving out nonsense words?.

    ReplyDelete
  34. They are talking about the old teaser trailer im pretty sure.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You can even check the link to the trailer they have there.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Eh. Who cares about a bunch of high school brats? Transformers predates them by a decade, and they probably aren't fans anyway. These are the kind of kids who've been weaned on a steady diet of reality TV and modern Top 40 music. They wouldn't know a well-designed movie trailer if it bit 'em in the ass. The trailer does an admirable job of providing just enough action and hints at the plot to build up excitement for the movie. RotF will probably be my movie of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  37. To Scott C / Anonymous at 8:02pm: Yeah, now that you mention it, I'm kind of confused. The link is for the most recent theatrical trailer, yet the way that the kids are describing it makes it seem like the Superbowl TVSpot or the first theatrical trailer.

It's such a darn shame that "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" won't make that extra $29.95 from those kids, huh? I guess it'll only make $799,999,970.05! NOOOO!!!!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  38. And these are the same kids voting on the mtv movie awards of course. Did anyone see that High School Musical was nominated 8x, compared to THE Dark Knight at 4 nominations from MTV...Ya, whats that say about teenagers these days... leave these teenies to the Musical, I'll take me some TRANSFORMERS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK OK, I actually READ the article.

The kids are referring to the FIRST trailer released on Valentine's day? It's shown at the bottom of the article. Clearly, they are WRONG about "5 words only", there's actually more dialogue than that from both Sam and Mikaela.

If they had seen the final trailer, who knows if their opinion would have changed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This kids are bunch of homo kids period! who wouldnt want to watch a movie with HOT CHICKS, GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING, SWEET RIDES, ALOT OF EXPLOSIONS and VERY VERY COOL CGI? Cmmon kids, stop pretending that the TWILIGHT movie is awesome, thats total bull shit . You gotta love a Bay movie especially a Transformer Bay made movie if your a normal teenager....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Come on guys,15 year old kids know nothing about films or filmmaking! Just like what was said earlier, teenagers claiming to much explosions, come on!
And 15 year old Jasmine Jafari knows more than most people cause her little brother's into TF? "And most what was going on,sure didnt look that good"? "This reminds me of why I'm not a big fan of Michael Bay"? Do they even know the directors of the movies they see? Come on!!! They were obviously forced to say that. TF2 is the most anticipated movie of the year!!

@ Pickelforthepeople: You are an idiot, there is a romance between Sam and Mickaela and the hole trailer told only half the plot and didn't show the most important scenes by longshot.

  45. C'mon, guys! We gotta jump on the little kid bandwagon! If the children aren't enthused about it, then it must not be very good! /sarcasm

No, you wanna know who the REAL fuckers are here? It's the jackass idiots at the LA Times who think that it's some great original idea to pull in the kids to do reviews and opinion pieces.

"Let's let kids do the reviews so we'll know for sure what the kids are going to like!"

That's idiotic! It puts these kids in a position where they think that they need to act "adult" and "sophisticated", and thus have to act like they can't enjoy a fantasy/sci-fi movie just for its entertainment value - which is really all that's intended.

Shit like this gets me so aggravated.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ha! These kids make Paris Hilton look intelligent. Those kids are probably a bunch of High School Musical loving, Hannah Montana admiring, Myspace-ing, skateboard riding, Starbucks addicted teenyboppers who live in a wonderful little fantasy world and think that they're soooooo grownup and smart. Puh-lease! Go back to texting and checking out your Facebook and downloading your iTunes and Twittering! XD

  47. dumbest shit i ever heard. especially coming from teenagers. if they don't like sfx like transformers then they were paid for the article, like most are, a small fee. cgi in Transformers is some of the best out there.

  51. Looking at the comments made by those teens, I wonder what's happening to teens nowadays. I want to pinpoint some things here..

    a. "...a lot of explosions", "...little information...", "...five words of dialogue..." & bla bla bla bla..

Its Michael Bay movie u can’t expect silly lovey dovey scenes, broke back mountain scenes or two people talking for 2 hours for the rest of the movie. You can’t get the whole script of the movie in 2 minutes...

Maybe we can please those douche bags by making a movie where a stalker runs around killing teens...guys & girls have sex on their parents bedroom...killer running around killing...teens having sex....

    b. I'm from Malaysia & huge fan of the G1 & some TF series made by the Japs. Back those days when I was 7 or 8 TF was shown in Malaysian channel. Now, I'm over 20 & when I saw the first Transformers (2007) movie, I enjoyed to the maximum. I felt like my childhood memories were revived. Although the movie had some flaws, it's still the hottest movie of 2007. By the way even the G1 series also had many explosions.

I’m very sure in revenge of the fallen, Bay made huge differences compared to the first movie.

    Anyway greetings from Malaysia

  52. Probably everyone else has said this but....WHO THE HELL ARE THESE PEOPLE?!?!

Worst review ever. I'll never trust these people to ever review something for me. And I hope this review is as old as the teaser tralier because that is what they are reviewing. If the review this last week or something then these nutjobs are way behind.

i like transformers, but i can see where these people are coming from. i can accept that the first movie was awful, but for the robot scenes.

if a person who didn't have the nostalgia or back story of the TF world, i imagine that first movie was a mess.

  67. I wouldnt worry. For a start, they viewed the teaser.

Second, they were probably some stuck up little brats who are salivating over the fact Harry Potter comes out the months after (can anybody else say they are looking forward to that... And be honest!!!)

Third, they are kids. You think they are going to change the minds of people who are going to watch this? A kids word is nothing. Hasn't changed my mind one bit

  68. Being that these kids have no idea about the movie industries i dont care ..if the assholes cant tell teaser from trailer they must be fucking in the stone age...jesus christ why was this even put on the blod

  69. Get this. This blog reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend online. I asked her if she had seen the 2007 Transformers yet. She responded "No and I won't". I tried over and over to convince her to go see it. I even asked "The trailers did do enough to concivce you to go see it?"

But then she said something that was completely idiotic. "I just never gave a crap about Transofers....but now if it were BEAST WARS..I'm all ears".

How the CRAP can you like beast wars and not give a crap about the original transformers? The second and third season of beast wars has strong references to the originals and the "Great War".

    ReplyDelete
  70. What the heck? How can u not think the trailer was awesome? Over on videogum.com, they had a post a short while ago. They criticized the first movie and said it sucked. But they did say that the trailer put together was good. But despite the trailer, they say that the second one is still going to be bad. Maybe most sequels are bad, but TF2 is supposed to be so much better.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Adding to my above, what does everyone think of the videogum posst?

  74. For gods sake they're talking about a trailer making no sense and they are right , if you guys didn't know about the story through sites like this , you would be clueless too

that's not to say (judging by the first movie) that the storyline for this movie is going to make any sense either .

We love the bots , we love the explosions , the plot, actors , dialogues are just plain nonsense

    ReplyDelete
  75. Ok first of all, Harry Potter needs to die.

Second, I am 14, and I don't like how people have been saying mean things about teenagers around here. THESE teenagers are either dead or close to dead from drugs, but not ALL teenagers are this retarded or elitist. I know a ton of people who say Transformers are gay because they are based off of toys, but so what? G.I. Joe, Barbie, and a bunch of other famous toylines with fan bases are not all 5-11 year olds. These kids want to sound "cool" and too old to be bothered. If they think that they are cool acting "grown up" then explain how the majority of people who went to see Transformers 1 were 17 to 26 year olds?

I do see the fact that in the teaser that you wouldnt know what the trailer is for until halfway through unless if you saw the first movie, or you were following the updates. Fiery meteors crashing through buildings and aircraft carriers aren't all that specific, but who cares? It's pretty frickin cool to look at. But it is a teaser, and not knowing what the movie is for until a ways into it is actually a good thing because people will pay attention to the trailer out of curiosity of what the movie is.

  76. Harry potter lives. He kills Voldermort by deflecting his killing spell. Snape kills Dumbledore. Nagini kills Snape. Snape is actually good. Nevil kills Nigini.

  78. These kids need to die. If they don't like Michael Bay's movies, why the hell should they watch them?! Like someone else on this forum said, Bay's movies do have a similar formula but it's what he DOES! Explosions, car chases, hot chicks, helicopters, and more explosions...THAT'S what I like to see and I don't care what anyone else says! This movie will be the best thing that I have ever seen on the big screen, end of story.

No actual romance between Sam and Mikaela? Did you watch the same movie as the rest of us?

Sure Sam was attracted to her because she is hot, that happens 95% in high school so he tried to get closer to her by giving her the ride home. Sure, she ended up in the Transformers fight by accident (kind of), because she thought something was wrong with Sam so she went to see what was up. Even when they saw Frenzy/Barricade for the first time she still thought that Sam was weird. Over time, while she was helping Sam they began to become closer, and closer. He tried clearing her name because he liked her, wouldn't you? Basically, Sam wasn't a popular guy in high school and he got with the hottest girl because of this. It looks like they like eachother for who they are. The fight brought them together. Also, being together for 2 years isn't a tiny romance in my books.

  81. Utterly RIDICULOUS. Bottom line is THIS. The estimated budget for “Transformers” was 150 million. The movie opened on the 1st weekend of July. The movie has since grossed $706,471,251 (Worldwide). Now let me ask you all, does it matter WHO supplied this 706.4 million? I think NOT. If I’m financially connected to this movie, I don’t care if it’s 90 year old WOMEN going to see it. 706.4 million is 706.4 million. Whatever demographic supplied that statistic is going to be catered to for the ENTIRE future franchise. I personally don’t give a DAMN what a few pimply faced, teenaged chronic masturbators said about the trailer. The sequel is going to make MAJOR DUCKETS, BOTTOM LINE. No 15 yr. old is going to convince me any differently.

"I was really excited to see the first one, but I was disapointed. Just so much focus on humans and very hard to enjoy the robots because the camera zoomed in too close or too far away"

OK SERIOUSLY, GOTTA SAY THIS, I DONT GIVE ABOUT THE HUMANS, THE MILITARY WAS LIEK THE ONLY GOOD SHIPMENT OF CHARACTERS BESIDES TRANSFORMERS WE CARED ABOUT, TOO MUCH FOCUS ON LITTLE PPL

that being said, the new movie definately is gonna have more focus on tfs and alot more tfs

  86. It is sad that even destroying the Transformers as Bay did that there is still such a strong following because of the 80's cartoon.

Is it nice to be handed success Bay? Quit accepting achievement awards as if you earned it.

  87. When I heard about the first Transformers I wasn't at all excited, but went to the movies to see it anyway & now I watch it on HBO or Skinemax & it's like I'm watching for the first time everytime....so judging from the previews I don't want to jump to conclusions, Michael Bay says it's going to be more story lines for the robots, so I'm looking forward to that!!!! I just hope the story line is more solid then it seems

I agree with the Anonymous person at 1:42 AM Bay didnt really do that much. All he did was directing which to be honest was one of the worst things about the first film. Even if the main plot of this film turned out to be a load of BS we would still see it because of the robots and possibly mikela which were are the only good things.

If a kid managed to get his hands on the Transformers 3D models he could make an award winning film easily. Why should all the credit go to Bay? Sure his films do portray good aspects but the only reason i am seeing this film is for the robots . . .

    Not explosions just the robots.

  89. Take it look @imdb and you we see that the group of under 18 years just gave 5k votes. And Transformers has nearly 170k votes, more than 160k votes came from people over 18.
