Transformers: Dark of the Moon Joins $1 Billionaire Club

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has officially crossed the $1 billion threshold. The movie is the 10th movie ever to cross the threshold and the first movie in Paramount Picture's 99 year existence. The movie crossed the mark Tuesday after international numbers came in. The total breaks down to $338 million from US, $663 million from international sales.

DOTM helped add a few other feathers to Paramount's cap. Its $180.7M opening weekend aiding in the studio beating other studios to $1 billion in ticket sales for the year. In addition the studio is also the first to reach $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, obviously thanks to DOTM providing literally half of that total. At this pace 2011 will be the studio's most successful year ever.
Brad Grey, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Paramount Pictures [said,] “We are grateful for the extraordinary work of Michael Bay and his film-making team, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and everyone at Paramount around the globe who played a part in helping make this latest TRANSFORMERS one of the 10 highest grossing films worldwide of all time."
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Transformers: Dark of the Moon for achieving this significant entertainment milestone.

  3. What's wrong with you people? I personally am a huge fan of the Transformers franchise but i really don't think this film should have been in that top 10. Did it ever occur to your minds that you can't compare a 3D ticket to a normal ticket?
    Double price rings any bell?

This film belongs in the top 10 because a number of those movies on the list were shown in 3D. If we take DOTM off, than we have to take HP 7.2 off, as well. And that's not going to happen.

Personally, I'm thrilled that this movie has gotten the recognition for this acheviement as it is well deserved. Out of the 3 movies this is by far the BEST. Sure, the first one will always be the most important as it introduced us to the Transformers (I can still watch that over and over even today), but DOTM was the most well balanced. Best story, best balance between human's and robots, we saw and heard a lot more from the new robots, and it had some great nods back to the G1 series.

And with how much this movie made, there is no doubt that the studios will continue. However, it will HAVE TO BE A REBOOT. Most of the major characters (especially on the Decepticon side) are dead, so there really isn't anywhere else to go with it.

  6. Sensational! Optimus Prime deserves his place in history. And to the guy hissing about ticket prices, realize that your argument only applied to Avatar. In fact 3D is a deterrent to film goers beause of the negative experiences they have had in the past. Bay has brought 3d-sexy back! And, at the end of the day, it's all about the studio budget and profit margin. This is marvellous! To celebrate, I'm going to watch it again tonight.

  7. well they certainly earned it because this movie rocked! as for the complaints about the 3D, well just look at it this way: at least the 3D was good unlike the bulk of movies this year.

The amount of revenue generated by DOTM's ticket sales is surpassed by only 9 other films.
    That's what this list is.
It's not a ranking of ticket sales or movie quality, it's about how much money various movies earned during their theatrical run.
Without a doubt the BO earnings of DOTM have been helped by its 3D ticket sales but to what extent? In its first 5 days of release about 60% of DOTM tickets sold were 3D. I have no doubt that percentage has dropped as that is typically been the case with 3D releases except for Avatar. which ended up, I beleive with about 70% of its ticket sales being 3D.
All things being equal if 70% of a movie's ticket sales are 3D the bump will be about 20% according to a recent study by the Wall Street Journal. The worldwilde increase per 3D ticket is about 25%...more in some places, less in others. People have this idea that 3D ticket prices are the only reason movies like DOTM are making huge money but their wrong.
Without the 3D bump it's likely that DOTM would have grossed something like 250-300 mil domestically and 400-450 mil internationally. Less than it will with 3D but still a lot of money.

  10. Good 3d helps any movie just look at avatar and dotm, but dotm did excellent over seas, shattered records in china beat avatar by 72% thats nothing to sneeze at, the bottom line is that it succeeded and did pretty dam well for a third movie, all movies like this go up and down in attendance, just look at spidy, pirates, lotr, batman, the jurassic park movies and they all have 3 or 4 movies under there belt. Transformers is an awsome franchise and bayformers is far from perfect but obviosly did its job. I'm ready for the next three.

  13. YAY!!!!! I just heard the news on TV and I was thrilled! I was jumping up and down in my living room and just had to come on here to see if it was mentioned... and there it is! I think it is well deserved. I watched the movie for the 6th time yesterday, for the first time not in 3D. The movie theatre was packed! I join the others on here saying that I'll be awaiting the next movie. I don't mind a reboot, but personally I think it can go on with a 4th movie.

I have to agree with you in regards to the quality of the film, but you have to understand that '41 films in the top 50 have been released since 2000, while no film prior to 1977 appears in the chart due to ticket-price inflation' -BOmojo.

To put into perspective, 'Gone with the Wind' has an adjusted domestic gross of $1.6 billion..

I'm sure people realise that the amount grossed simply does not reflect amount of tickets sold. Production companies these days choose to use the figure for the perception of how 'popular' a movie is.

But yes, I must agree unfortunately with the criteria on quality, a film like dotm should not be in the top 10. Then again i also think alice in wonderland & POTC4 dont either..so i just may be biased =P

  16. I'm celebrating this 1 billion mark!

    - 3D help? Yeah! You still need to convince the moviegoer to dish out the extra bucks. Not an easy thing to do after so many bad converted releases.

    - 'Gone with the Wind' has an adjusted domestic gross of $1.6 billion ? Again... Yeah! But those films didnt had TV sets in every houses, multi films releases per week and illegal torrents files to go against.

  17. The worst Michael Bay movie to date crossing $1billion mark only thank to 3D inflated prices costing 40-50% more than regular 2D ones in most countries. Actual number of viewers didn't increase compared to previous movies, but each viewer paid around 50% more to watch it.

  24. And yet Bay and Shia both want out of a big hit movie based on a big hit cartoon. They need to realize they have the best set of movies here and continue making them. they need to make a TF4, TF5, TF6. Don't make Star Wars be the only 6 part most successful set of movies out there. Transformers can win too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Anonymous 8/04/2011 7:04 PM: Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf want to quit the franchise because they know Transformers3 is a mess of a movie. They surely are happy as hell for all the money flowing in their bank accounts thanks to so many dumb people. Worse the movie more the people paying to watch it, just like with Avatar it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Come on now, its ok if you don't like the movie or bay but 7:04pm said nothing nasty and seems to just be excited about the future of transformers movies, so why would you call millions of people all over the world dumb for enjoying these movies, like your so above everyone or something, that kind of talk belongs to the Roger Ebert club over there at rotten tomators , I would think you can have a civil discussion about why you don't like the movies instead of calling people names, it's kind of childish, talk about a new director or new actors or something, i just don't understand why we can't have a civilized discussion about the movie weather or not you liked the movie, it cant be that hard.

  30. I just don't want anyone to reboot TF movies all over unless they can make it equal or way better than it all ready is. I mean yes the characters come in and some get dropped without some way of killing them off on screen than off screen. But the G1 cartoons like that. Some TF autobots and decepticons always came and left when the artists wanted them in and out. So calling the movies a mess is not right. Not perfect, ok. But mess, no! Just saying they could have done better. But was not nor ever will be by true fans a bad trilogy set of movies. I think it should be about a 9 out of 10. The missing 1 is because of all the missing characters that disappeared and came back or just vanished of screen or has the wrong names. I do agree and say I hope they do 4th, 5th, and 6th movie like Star Wars. They don't need to rush making them but I do wish to see them soon. Transformers 1, 2, & 3 were the best CGI films in a long time since for example The Terminators.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I consider 3 parts of movies tobe the weakest films in comparing with original cartoon! Only 1 one is good, but others are bad really, and people watch 3 part only for 3D, which is of course great.. And that fact about 1 billion shows only high prices on 3D cinemas.

    ReplyDelete
  32. films tickets were cheaper in the past, but the quantity of films released was also much smaller, things like "gone with the wind" stayed in the cinema for months and months...I think the transformers movies are pretty much total perfection, you cannot ask for more on any level, people don´t get that the focus cannot be only on the robots because:
a-they are insanely expensive, every fucking second they are on screens costs millions.
It just saddens me, the reaction the world has to this movies, it must be symptomatic of some deep shit, because they trudly are awe-inspiring and espectacular, trudly a saturday morning cartoon brought to life in the most bombastic way possible, IT´S LIKE PORN, HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE PORN, HAS EVERYONE GONE INSANE?!

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Download File.

DOTM is easily the best of the trilogy. The first film is good but focused too much on the humans. You fail yet again troll.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The world reaction saddens you 9:52 am? really? why? I dont understand what you mean, The world just gave the transformers franchise over 1 billion dollars, I hope your not letting the Roger Ebert crowd get to you because they faild and the world prooved that the haters and the so called critics are irrelevent, So I'm just wondering why a solid trans fan feels that way, I mean the franchise is obviosly successful so why so sad?

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Anonymous 8/05/2011 12:47 PM: Transformers3 is the cheapest and worst of the trilogy. It has no continuity nor consistency with the first two either. They rushed a script rewrite when Michael Bay got the ugly face topmodel that can't act to replace Megan Fox for whatever un professional personal reason.
It's absolutely the worst movie by Michael Bay to date, worse than Bad Boys 2 that had some serious issues but was still miles better than the mess that Transformers3 is.
It's really cheap CGI wise because ILM delivered no new CGI models and fighting sequences are short as hell. There is nothing as good as the amazing and long forest battle of Transformers2, nor anything as big as Devastator, nor large scale fighting sequences in Egypt, there is nothing epic on Transformers3. Most Transformers3 movie was made on blue-screen just like Avatar. Few scenes were really filmed in Chicago, and the end result looks lame as hell.
Also it shows that a lot of scenes maybe filmed or at least planned to be filmed were cut, the editing on Transformers3 is awful.
It's the longest of the trilogy and it feels the shortest and just too quick, too many answers left, too many plot holes. And the Rosie Huntington-Whiteley trying to act ruined every single scene, with Michael Bay acting like an idiot forcing her at an cost on viewers.
And Bay and Paramount are getting tons of your money laughing at how dumb you people are at paying more when they do a bad job. The first two movies were excellent, but it's clear that too many idiots all over the world enjoy being ripped off and paying for bad movies instead. Transformers3 is a very bad movie.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ya know you were doing fine there for a while and I even agreed with some of the things you said, But there you go again calling millions of people dumb and idiots for enjoying the movie, I certainly didn't like everything about the movie but i wouldn't call anyone an idiot or dumb because they liked it. Alot of people didn't like the first two exspecially ROTF but you did so are you!!! dumb and a idiot? Oh no never your above everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Anonymous 8/05/2011 7:09 PM: pathetic tactic of yours there. You are a dumb idiot too then. Maybe you are a Paramount employee laughing about how dumb and idiot people are paying for your bad work.
The first two movies were well made, there was a lot of effort put into them and it shows at every level.
Transformers3 is a real mess instead. It's sloppy. It's bad. It's slow, it's cheap. It's flawed as hell.
It's the worst Michael Bay movie to date.
    That is what it is.
And only dumb idiots would want to pay more for a bad product.
James Cameron surely knows something about that since he released that awful Avatar garbage fraud.
After all Michael Bay and Paramount requested James Cameron to become supervisor on Transformers3 for the 3D cameras fraud, and it shows that Cameron taught Bay how to go cheap. Surely long gone are the days in which James Cameron was releasing, filming and producing top-notch movies like Terminator,Terminator2,Aliens.. Those were real movies, expensive, well made, excellent, never seen before.
But then he decided to stop doing the right thing, which would be work hard and instead he went the cheap route with the marketing fraud phase of Avatar. Fool people with marketing babbling and claim what you don't deliver.. that is the basic formula, Michael Bay followed the same route as his new master James Cameron taught him to.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1.16 billion and counting TRANS4ORMERS on the way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The troll is that same idiot who said TF3 would bomb without Megan Fox. Now he is saying Bay fooled everyone which is why it made over a billion worldwide. The movie is a success. You are not. Megan Fox was hot in the first two films, now she doesn't even look like herself. No one except you cared she wasn't in the third one. Megan is not an actress...she is just eye candy. So stop pretending like anyone cares what you think troll.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Anonymous 8/05/2011 10:59 PM: Avatar was a bigger boxoffice success too (but it sold few DVD/BluRay discs) and it was an awful movie, people got fooled by James Cameron claiming what he didn't deliver at all.
And..seriously .. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would be an actress, what?? Really? She can't act a little bit. She got an ugly face, she ruined every single scene and Michael Bay kept forcing her on viewers at any cost, she had zero chemistry with Shia LaBeouf and her character was the opposite of true G1 Carly.
What are you a Paramount marketing employee?

    ReplyDelete
  41. the hater lost all off his credibility when he said transformers 2 was good

    ReplyDelete
  42. He lost all credibility period. But whats worse is he's killing any decent discussion. Might as well not even come on here anymore. He got what he wanted ,all the attention. It always starts the same exact way a few people comment on something positive and this guy instantly replies by calling people idiots, ugly, dumb or your a paramount employee and he just does it over and over and over again. This guy has been here from start to finish with the movie. Either he gets banned or you just completely ignore him or you just stop comming to this site or you just keep fighting with this guy because you can't have a normal discussion at all with everyone being agravated and fighting with this one person. I've already tried to reason with him and said if you dont like the movie thats fine have a civilized discussion about it, he called me dumb an idiot and I am now a paramount employee....So there you go, hopeless

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Anonymous 8/06/2011 3:47 AM: Transformers2 was excellent and very expensive. They went to Egypt for filming the scenes, it shows how much effort Michael Bay put into it. The movie didn't need inflated 3D prices to fool investors and viewers. More people actually watched Transformers2 than Transformers3 so far.
3D ticket prices are 50% higher on average outside US and in the US number of viewers decreased a lot indeed despite inflated 3D ticket prices.

  44. ATTENTION TROLLS:
we don't give a damn what you think!
it is very sad how haters come here and hate. you know what im saying?
the haters probably look up transformers 3, and hate on it in the comments. and theyre just showing that they have no life, so they do this!
sorry trolls, but we won this time! go get fuckin lives!

  45. I liked Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. I would consider it "good". I thought 1 and 3 were even better, but I never thought 2 was bad. Despite dying in the beginning. Not that that was really the same SideWays, but whatever.

Pretty awesome to see the 1 billion mark breached, especially with all the competition it had this summer. Looking forward Transformers 4.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree PRIME, I come hear to talk transformers and celebrate how awsome the future is with this franchise and there is so much to talk about in the transformers universe it just goes on for ever, I love it and can't wait to see what's next, You know something big is comming like TRANS4MERS!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. to the serial troll above, rotf was 'fantastic'!? that film was bloody terrible! If you thought the storyline was crap, just look at the scene with the cgi explosions overlaying over fox's body.

I'm sure that DOTM was a massive disappointment to many,(if they would admit it) after what MB said that 'he's learnt from his mistakes'. I like Empire's article on how they summed the movie up by," Transformers 3, Michael Bay - he lied..."

But there's no need to call people who may perceive the movie as a good film to be 'dumb' or 'idiots'. That's your opinion and you have no right to force your personal judgement on others.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Anonymous 8/07/2011 5:18 AM: re-read what you just wrote there, you are a real hypocrite indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I liked the movie and am glad it made over the Billion mark and it still will be going higher with DVD and Blueray sales, but at the same time don't like the lists they come out with making such a big deal. Great and all, but it isn't a master piece that could compare to other classics that didn't have the high price tags to see it like this one did.

It is like the Olympics. I personally hate how they make a big deal about how many medals a country has made over another. US, Russia, Canada, etc. of course are going to have high medal counts compared to other countries... What they should do is go by the ratio or percentage of that's counties Olympic team. If a country has one athlete and wins a Gold, then they should be reconginized over a country that has 200+ athletes that one has 20 people win a gold.

Yes I know abit off topic, but maybe they could make a list that updates the ticket sales price (just for comparison) to today's prices and see where other movies that aren't on that list would then stand.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Who cares what he said, why do we call people trolls, dumb, idiots or a paramount employee or the new one hypocrite. There is nothing rong with simply having a discussion and stating an opinion. Stating an opinion on weather you love the movie or hate the movie just should not include calling people names. I get agravated with some of the things that people say too but I think I made my point without trashing someone or calling them names.I got a question for everyone, Do you love the TRANSFORMERS universe, I'm assuming you do, so what new director would you like to see, what different direction would you like to see the franchise go in, what different autobots or decepticons would you like to see....Can we discuss? Or trash the hell out of eachother?

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is one happy dumb Paramount employee idiot who loves DOTM and will be seeing it for the 16th time tomorrow. TRANSFORMERS FTW!!!!! Not sure which director I would choose (assuming I had any choice). I'd have to go over my similar genre movies and see which one does it best. I know I'd very much like Steve Jablonsky to continue with the score. I loved what he did for the music. It's beautiful. Beautiful cars are a must too; the director would have to have a good eye for that. Even for the new bots. I have to give Bay props on that. That Italia was damn sexy, and I'm a girl. I'd like to see Mirage (and actually do his invisible thing), and Inferno and some of the other bots, but I'd like to see OP (of course!), Ironhide, Bee, and Ratchet.

  52. Best way to annoy a "Troll" is to ignore them. They are just posting to get some sort of reaction from others. Treat a Troll the same way you would treat a post you have no intrest in, by not replying to it. They will eventually move on to another forum. :)
