First Look at Transformers 4 Optimus Prime Toy

At the New York Comic-Con going on this weekend, Hasbro provided the first public look at a figure from next year's Transformers: Age of Extinction toy line. The leader class Optimus Prime toy does seem to indicate that Hasbro is keeping with their intent to simplify the transformation sequence, similar to the recent waves of Beast Hunters and Generations toys. It also seems to show that the "new" approach to the look of the movie version of the characters is very close to the previous three films. Still one figure is not a pattern so too early to draw concrete conclusions about the movie design approach. Here are the images and description from Hasbro's press release from Hasbro while a gallery of images from the 'Con floor of the toy is here.

  1. It could be just an accessory weapon. But doesn't that kinda look like the star sabre?

    Wtf is this sh*t?!
What is up with that kibble?!........disappointing, absolutely disappointing!

He looks like a medieval/samurai, with a 'robotic' dress, made with his alt mode doors.

    1. I agree, if this is the actual design of Optimus for the movie, Hasbro and Bay have definitely screwed up big time! Just look at all that "back pack kibble".... this is a disgrace!......I was also getting my hopes up for this movie too!

What is worse is that this is a leader class toy?!?! Like i am going to spend $40 on this crap.

    2. Please, wait until we have CGI render of that robot character. Toys isn't the perfect copy and the actual Optimus might still be good one.

While I'll keep in mind that toys not always resemble the movie bots 100%, it still is a leader class toy. That is not reassuring, to say the least!!!

Why the hell are the trucks nose and cab on Optimus' legs and not on his chest???? WTF is up with that? That looks ridiculous! If that is used in the movie, that will suck big time!!! The nose and cab should be his chest, always!!!
Also his helmet and his ´ears´ are way to high, they almost look animal-like. Come to think of it, his head looks like Jazz´s head in the 1st movie! That is kinda cool.
The toy doesn´t have any shoulders, but I think Optimus will have big shouders in the movie. And the ´back pack kibble´ is just to make an easy transformation pausible for the toy. I bet you won´t see that in the movie.
That sword indeed looks like the star sabre. The shield also has a gun in it, that´s cool.
We´ll just have to wait and see the 1st teaser-trailer, but something in me says, we will only see small glimpses of Optimus in the trailer and that Bay wants to keep things very hush till the movie comes out.

Maybe the trucks nose and cab are on his legs, also are for an easy and simple transformation pausible for the toy. In the movie they could still be his chest.

    2. Having wheels in legs and nose and cab on Optimus' chest makes the transforming style too simple. Unicron trilogy has done different job and now AOE does it too.

    3. Martinus Prime10/10/2013 10:06 AM

Then why change it?? Optimus always had the nose and cab as the chest, always. In all iterations of all cartoons and toys! Why change that??? That is just spitting in the faces of all TF fans!
It is indeed a big change like Bay said and wanted, but it is a wrong change if this is actually in the movie!

  5. Dudemus:...before I totally go batty on the robot mode, I would like to see the rear view of the kibble. So far it seems that the simpler approach isn't the right approach. So far. Now the truck mode, if I may add?...is a great interpretation of the actual vehical it looks great. But getting to the simpler approach further, being a collector of such items for decades I have grown very fond of the more intricate transformations. For one: they have more acurate detail and once you figured it out you have a feeling of accomplishment and that what make it fun. The simpler way of transformation is boring and leaves nothing to the imagination. As of right now I just love the fact that Optimus is a leaderclass figure and not a voyager class. Lastly, I hope also that hasbro gets it right this time around and make all of the larger characters leaderclass, midsize voyagers like suv's etc. And the smaller deluxeclass like the cars. And no more leaderclass Bumblebee...please. I'm staying Optimistic, no pun intended.

Then they try to push the grey plastic version here in the US.

    3. Martinus Prime10/10/2013 10:37 AM

Yes, like I mentioned before, that´s ICONIC!!! That is THE ONE THING you can NOT change on Optimus Prime.
What the hell were the designers of this toy thinking?

The general thoughts by many fans and toycollectors, like on TFW2005, are, that this looks very bad.....
Looks like Hasbro only wants to make more money and deliver cheaper and simpleler toys even more than ever.
Everyone over at TFW2005 goes beserk.

But..... the press release says it is STYLED in the new character´s new look of the 4th movie. Maybe it looks alot different in the movie??

      Delete
    4. Dudemus: I certainly hope so, more than likely he will, but it will take me some getting use to Optimus without the windsheilded Chest. We spoke about MikeB's way of taking things a little too far before, but this kind of takes the cake. Now, don't get me wrong. It looks pretty badass especially the alt mode. But l invisioned Optimus with sheilds...

    5. Martinus Prime, you must go to a different TFW2005.

Absolutely no one is going beserk either way about this prime

  7. Six Pipez: will be my autobot identity from now on. I really dont like where Hasbro is going with this "simpler approach." In all my years of collecting.. The simpler approach was left to legend and deluxe class figures. Not what I look for in a leader class. If this is a leader class figure then I need a masterpiece figure please! Lol walking away from the figure though, it looks like optimus has evolved a bit and has a look of a knight/samurai. Now that the figure is revealed.. I hope Bay takes the opportunity to show the new Optimus in all his glory soon.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Dudemus: l had mention before in an earlier blog response, that I believed Optimus with this new truck and all should have a new head sculpt as well. Looks like I got my wish. But I also thought that being that this new alt mode had some similarities to the TFprime, that his transformation would be similar also. But it seems to me by looking at this figure that his arms will not come out of the engine compartment like the Tfprime and the ROTF leaderclass and there on. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

  11. Six Pipez: by no means am I going to defend this figure. As it is honestly one of the worst Optimus leader class toys I have ever seen. But the whole no wind shield thing doesnt really bother me. Especially being a fan of the comics and other TF media, I'm used to seeing him without it from time to time. As long as the design is hot and Peter Cullen is reprising his role then the character has been done justice. Though the change may be a bit drastic from what some of us are used too, I have to say.. I kinda saw it coming. Hasbro has made statements about making "new toys" for the movies validating some design changes in various forms. Serious speaking if the only thing that changed about him was his alt mode... Then his robot mode would still be practically the same toy with a few new kibble pieces here and there. Again... Not to defend this "simpler approach." But this wont change anything for me as a movie goer for this film. Seriously when the vehicles transform and the guns get drawn... I'm not going to be like "Optimus kicked ass but... WHERE ARE THE WINDSHIELDS!?!?!" Lol... To conclude, I agree with you guys. The windshields are iconic for the most part. In the grand scheme of things though, their absence here is minor. Glass breaks when dropped, when something gets thrown at... When the bullets starts flying it isnt the most ideal thing to have guarding the chest. That being said, this is coming from a diehard Optimus Prime fan. All I have to say is... He better not die again.

Don't worry all of you there internacional TF fans that loves alot Optimus prime just got an idea for all you guys to calm down: alright when I looked up on tfw2005 I saw all the pictures and I also got angry, disappointed and sad and all of you guys also for the new optimus prime toy for Transformers: age of extinction but wait it did said Transformers AOE Generation optimus prime so what I'm trying to say here that I'm not sure if Hasbro gonna do this for the toyline of TF4 next year but I think that when say Generation that means a versions of this Generation to change some parts for the charecters that has there own original movie version just like how transformers prime toyline had dark energon that puts charecters a different bodys or colers not only transformers prime but much more transformers toylines that might have these type of stuff but what what I really really trying to tell you alllllll is that Bay himself and Hasbro are teasing us that this optimus might be a FAKE!!!! but not the truck mode the robot mode yes so that's what I think trying to help you all to not worried till we see the really true version of the almighty leader of the Autobots so I only think Bay is just trying to make us explode of excitement! that's what I think so this a generation version that tkes out the true movie parts of prime this is not true just only an opinion mine okay! hope I fixed your problems now Till All Are One by Optimus Prime!

  14. Dudemus: I just came back from viewing the pics of the new Optimus prime figure...I am livid. Are you serious?...he looks as if he's been thrown together. From the front he looks pretty good. But from the side and rear is an eyesore. All this and that hanging and stacked on his back. The rear tires and trailer hitch?...terrible. just tooooo much kibble. I hope for the life of me that this is a prototype for them to work off of to make changes and improvements. If not this is the worst Optimus Prime I've ever seen from hasbro. Simpler is not better and this travesty of an action figure is a pure indication of that. I had said that I'd be Optimistic, don't think I can manage that at this point. Who in the hell signed off on this design?!...no creativity. Simpler leavess too much undone and this is the example... (did I mention that I was a collector) sorry...anyway,...six pipez@...yes, I'd rather have the same old toy with a few new kibble than a brandnew toy with s@#tload of it.

    1. Tff&: this certainly isn't the silent treatment, we seen that...this is not that, this is worse.lol I agree they couldve used the same concept from the Rotf version of Optimus prime with the new truck design and just. Hanged a few things here and there. It seems like they thought too hard to make things so simple. Its a mess. The truck mode is great its beautiful and sleek and if you glance at it, it looks almost real. But the robot mode has a lot to be desired. Maybe if we're lucky (like TF1) we'll get a better leaderclass version for the next movie. The first version was garbage, but then the ROTF version was and still is Iconic in design...lets just hope.

  16. I will go against the grain and say I kinda like the pseudo-samurai Optimus. In some ways it reminds me of the super mode from armada, and in others like the Drift or Banzaitron figure, which were two of my favorites from recent years. Now for the purists, I am betting that we get a rusted cab-over prime that's more g1 at some point, assuming the two are the same.

  17. As far as the transformation, guys...he isn't completely transformed...how do I know?...l was there. His tire frame slides down further and snaps flush against his back, then you take the side rail "which is one piece" flip it up. The crossbar will close in between the wheels and the sleeper sides once done will be at the top of back opened like wings behind his shoulders...ok? So again, these Optimus Prime photos are not of him completely transformed, I hope that info gets

Lol I know this must sting. Hasbro revealed this as if they were all excited about it and got this type of reception about it. Everywhere I have looked, almost everyone hated it. Hopefully they listen to the fan outcry and change this thing. I lucked up and got a TFP first edition Optimus back when they first came out. Looks like it will be the last Optimus I get for awhile. 25. I'd like to offer a unique reply:1)My take and 2)A solution. Before I start, I,too, will miss the iconic windshield pecs our beloved Optimus Prime has had over the years. However, Armada Optimus didn't have them either. I kinda like the new design. It's too late to change the design w/80% of the film being shot - and Bay & Co., ESPECIALLY FOUR FILMS IN at this point, are NOT going to change.

Am I excusing Bay for the drastic changes he's made? NO. Do I like every single thing he's done with our beloved transforming robot franchise? NO. However, the man knows how to craft visually stimulating action sequences, though as well as amazing practical and digital effects.

The Solution? In my opinion, the solution is CREATING WHAT I WANT TO SEE-I draw, design, and create my own Transformers characters and stories. There's also plenty of TF fans like ourselves who do the same-from folks like Randall Ng & Dr. SMOOV with their amazing, humorous recreations of TF characters; Montri Polchai with his amazing digital animations-ESPECIALLY a Badass movie-style Hound character on his youtube channel; Jon3pt0 with his AMAZING Peter Cullen-as Optimus Prime impressions; The guy doing the incredible forthcoming fanfilm THE LAST ENERGON CRYSTAL, and all the many amazing kitbashers, artists, and filmmakers creating amazing contributions to TF lore

I also do video production and I implore each of you-especially those who are pissed off to no end, to use your abilities. We may not have a multi-million dollar budget like Bay does, but we have the interest, talent, and abilities to craft something amazing regardless. At the end of the day, we can bitch & moan incessantly-but what's more tragic: the cinematic alterations of our favorite TF stories-OR the apathy preventing the creation of something to counter what we may not like???? Food for thought.

Thanks, TFLive for all you do.

    Respectfully,

    1. Bay doesnt design the bots or pick alt modes, blame Hasbro. He also doesnt write the scripts, blame the writers. The rest of your post was spot on.

      Delete
    2. David, I know. That does not negate the fact that Bay does have tremendous influence on said things, and even in interviews (check the behind-the-scenes documentaries on the films and even the director commentaries) he's revealed in his own words that he wanted certain design elements on the bots, basically DICTATING to Josh Nizzi and Ben Proctor how to draw them. He's also indicated that he's dictated script & story elements, too. Yes, I know that Ehren Krueger and the other folks share the blame. That doesn't change the fact that people use terms like Bayformers.

I actually like SOME of the things Bay has done, and I do understand that change must occur - where I differ is the "justifications" for some of the changes, I.e., turning Wheeljack into Que, and Bay & Spielberg especially, dictating that Que look like Einstein, because Einstein was, as THEY put it, "a famous inventor". Here's the problem: 1)The HISTORICAL Albert Einstein was pretty much an anti-war person, and, 2)he WAS NOT an inventor, but more of a THEORIST, devising theories like the famous E=MC2 (Theory of Relativity). .Look it up-even though Einstein initially supported the Manhattan Project, he soon opposed it after learning of the long-term devastating effects of atomic weapons-even going so far as writing a letter to Pres. Harry Truman and J. Oppenheimer urging them NOT to use atom bombs on Japan after learning of the effects of the Los Alamos atom bomb tests. Look it up and find out for yourself - also look up all the atom bomb tests afterwards, as well as the 1984 WARNER AMENDMENT. The bottom line is when folks fail to read and research, then it's easy to justify mis- and DISinformation-especially when it's famous directors, film writers, studio execs, and fans of same, making it easy for the aforementioned group to "justify" statements like, "All moviegoers are too stupid to recognize the difference". WRONG! Not THIS moviegoer-I read and seek to find out for myself the truth.

I also used to bash the hell out of the films-and while I still have some issues with them, there are some things I enjoy about them, and even better, I can create my own TF materials, and I can rewatch my G1 boxset. I also have come to a point where I realize the films for what they are: a MICHAEL BAY film.

      Respectfully,

  29. I also am not a fan of this TOY rendition. It's not completely accurate to how the cgi render will look. Now granted the windshield is part of the look of Optimus Prime. How about lips? Nope. However, it turned out not to be as bad as well thought it would. That being said before all the hate starts up wait till you see the cgi model and make the judgement from there. After all it could be worse. Optimus Prime could have a completely disfigured head like Megatron did in the first. Also another thing to take into account is that Michael Bay insists that all the pieces have to fit and transform realistically. Since they decided to change the truck (and I have no idea why aside from sales) the windshield may just not have fit like we would have liked.

But I think we can be certain he does not play a big part in the movie, but maybe I'm wrong.
