Michael Bay Discusses Filming TF4 in Hong Kong

Despite two failed blackmail attempts, Michael Bay has nothing but praise for Hong Kong after completing two weeks of filming in the city. In an interview with South China Morning Post, the director discussed some of the challenges filming in the city and a little bit of the story. Below is the major portions of the interview but you can find the full article, with videos, here.

As for the image, that was created by Jeffrey Marshall of Pixel Rally with inspiration from the Prime renders and the TF4 logo. His work was unintentionally highlighted by Age of Extinction's Sophia Myles in a recent tweet when the hotel she was at used his unofficial Autobot logo to dress up her food delivery.
“Hong Kong is a very visual city,” he said in an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post.

[In regards to the extortion attempts], “In the restaurants, in the hotel, I must have 30 people coming to me saying ‘I’m so sorry’. But it was such a silly incident,” Bay said. He was also surprised how the incidents got looped into international news reported on BBC and CNN.

Filming the fourth Transformers instalment was a big operation involving at least 100 local crew. Bay said a lot of the equipment and at least 10 cars had to be shipped to Hong Kong – including some massive vehicles that were disassembled into smaller parts to fit in an air cargo hold.

Bay said it took him nine months – with a lot of help from the government – to work out the Hong Kong shooting plan. And despite having made three Transformers movies and many big-budget action blockbusters such as Armageddon and Pearl Harbour, it was still a challenge.

“Hong Kong was very hard,” said Bay. “I’ve had difficult locations in my life. But shooting in the market with so many people watching ... it made it very challenging.”

Bay managed to get 30 to 35 minutes of what will be a two hour blockbuster - including a Hong Kong set in Detroit that he blew up: “There was a lot of dynamite.”

Asked if any elements had been changed or adjusted - as in other blockbusters such as the latest Iron Man instalment - to appease regulators of the China film market, now the world’s number two, Bay replied with a definite “no”. Filming in Hong Kong had nothing to do with it either, he said.

“I can still shoot in Texas and people in China are still going to see it,” he said. “You want to do something new and different. I’m tired of shooting in Los Angeles ... I almost shot it out. You need new inspiration. This is the city that I always wanted to shoot.”

But he still declined to reveal the plot, he only said: “We are not destroying Hong Kong.” He said the story started in the US and there was a reason to go to China. Is Hong Kong a great hiding place for the Decepticons? “I can’t tell you how they get here.” Are Autobots rescuing Hong Kong from something? “They are not rescuing Hong Kong but definitely rescuing something.”

Bay and his crew leave Hong Kong today to continue filming at Wulong in Chongqing and on the Great Wall in Beijing.

Great interview! Maybe he didn't have to film in Hong Kong, but I guess he does need to film some scenes in China for pleasing the Chinese market a little bit, besides casting Chinese actors.
But I bet bet we get some awesome looking scenes from the locations they scouted with Wulong and the Great Wall!!

I'm still very glad that we don't get another version like Iron Man 3 and that there are no elements adjusted.

      From the interview above -

“We are not destroying Hong Kong.” He said the story started in the US and there was a reason to go to China. Is Hong Kong a great hiding place for the Decepticons? - Interviewer

“I can’t tell you how they get here.” - Michael Bay

There are TWO ways the Autobots can get to China from already known 'Transformer Equipment':

First, I know Sentinel was the creator and the only Transformer to use them, but maybe they found a way to use the space bridge technique using Sentinel's Pillars?

      Second, The Ark.

  2. Not sure if NEST is still in tact or they are working with the humans, but they could transport them across the Pacific

  3. Jetfire somehow used a SpaceBridge In ROTF.

    1. Dudemus:Jetfire teleported, he has that ability and the Fallen also has the ability to teleport. Wasnt a spacebridge...but what I would like to mention is that according to Dotm, they made it clear that Decepticons were in "Hong Kong&China"

  4. They're either 'rescuing' the Dinobots or a particular weapon. It's probably the same weapon that Optimus, supposedly, says he must leave the Bots to hide.
I also think that the Argosy and the vehicles he's traveling with ARE a second Bot team. I know quite a few want very badly to believe that they're stunticons and ignore the possibility that the team could be Magnus and Hot Rod. However, we DON'T see Optimus in Hong Kong, but we DO see the rest of HIS team. Now, IF the Dinobots are in Hong Kong, along with the weapon, the Bots would need 2 seperate teams. One to deal with the Dinobots and the other to go after the weapon. Who better to deal with the Dinobots, then a team of wreckers and mele warriors?

  5. While I don't think we're going to see Unicron in this movie, I do think they're building up to introducing Unicron and possibly Primus. I also noticed that there is a very slight similarity in this movie to Transformers Prime. I do wonder if Bay is using a little inspiration from that series.

I honestly don't know if we will ever see Unicron. Yesterday my fanboyism struck me and I watched DOTM and the special features again. If characters like Devastator and The Driller were crashing computers... Imagine Unicron. Going in from something a large as 3 city blocks into 2 planet sized Transformers? Ambitious, but maybe more than they'll pay for. A lot of "cheating" would have to take place. Me personally.. I think Optimus may have found something like The Forge of Solus Prime or something and has drawn the interest of a long forgotten Prime. One that doesn't bare title of Prime... Liege Maximo.
