Toy Fair Confirms Galvatron, More Age of Extinction Dinobots, New Video Game

Toy Fair 2014 continued today in New York. Today provided a look at what Hasbro plans for teens (and adult collectors) that are not going to be quite satisfied with the simplistic transformations introduced yesterday. The reveals do indicate that teen and adult fans will get their chance to enjoy multi-step transformations for Transformers: Age of Extinction characters that is based on what Hasbro learned when doing the Generations/Classic toys from the last few years. From those revealed, it is now officially confirmed that Galvatron is the black and dark grey 2014 Freightliner Argosy and likely the other big bad of the movie (besides Lockdown). In addition five Dinobot characters are now confirmed: Grimlock (T-Rex), Strafe (two-headed pterodactyl), Scorn (spinosaurus), Slash (velociraptor), and Slug (triceratops). So far only Grimlock and Strafe have been spotted in the Super Bowl trailer, hopefully upcoming trailers will tease the other three and apparently all five of them do transform at some point in the movie.

From what I can gather, Hasbro has decided to define their line along two main lines based on age group geared towards. As a result the two main lines are Robots in Disguise (4-8 years) and Generations (8+). In the past Robots in Disguise more or less referred to any Transformers that wasn't part of the Generations line while Generations was a rebrand of the Classics lines that was made up of homages to classic Transformers characters and their most famous alt modes be it from previous toy lines (mostly Generations One) or the comic books. Now that transformation complexity factors into age group designation, RID's sub lines include the very simple transformation toys seen so far so including Rescue Bots, Flip & Change, One-Step Changers, Power Battlers, and Titan figures. Generations now refers to the multi-step transformation sequences (but without the complexity of previous movie lines) and so its sub-lines are Classics (for lack of a label as Hasbro doesn't have one) and Age of Extinction. Basically its just a shifting of sub line names that seems geared towards toy retailers to assist in how they might allocate shelf space than anything that fans should give too much thought about.

Hasbro also held a panel that provided a few more details on their RID and Generation plans. Keeping in mind that Generations is now a combination of classic and AOE toys, Hasbro plans on releasing 54 Gen figures in 2013 with 73 planned for 2014. It seems Generations will continue the size classes we are accustomed to with legends, deluxe, voyager, and leader toys. Here is my breakdown of the new toys lines that will start coming out starting in May and later based on the galleries and info from various panel reports.

Last but not least Hasbro revealed the next video game for the franchise called Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. The announcement trailers is below with Peter Cullen voicing Prime. The footage shows a mix of the Fall of Cybertron characters and alt modes which somehow intersects with Age of Extinction characters under a theme of "Two Worlds. Two Sides. One Goal. Protect Earth." The suggestion is it gives rise to Grimlock vs Grimlock, Prime vs Prime, etc. game play. The game will be released for XBox One, PS4, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. No exact date on when but assume close to the movie. Also turns out that the game is not being made by High Moon Studios who made the previous two games. Instead the developers are Edge of Reality (Mass Effect 3) is doing the console version while Wayforward is doing the tactical RPG version on the 3DS. Hard to tell if the replacement of High Moon is a ding against the company or a caused by a tight production schedule. Game image gallery here. A new press release indicates the game is same gameplay style as previous and set for release on June 24, 2014, just days before the movie's 27th release.

Directly below are links to the Toy Fair display galleries from various websites that is a mix of the new toys with previously announced toys that have or about to hit toy shelves. The links in the breakdown of the various lines are official Hasbro images of the various new toys that have been announced. The videos with each section are thanks to Ryan Yzquierdo's YouTube channel.

  1. the most ugly movie toy line...sorry hasbro this isn't for collectors

  2. I remember back before the first movie came out the outcry about the vehicle mode for Prime not looking like G1, and there being replies about how it wouldn't work for the movie, not possible etc, and now they're doing it...

  5. I think these toys look alright. Galvatron as well. That kind of sucks imo. Don't get me wrong he's a good character just wanted a different villain.

    1. Well, we know he appears, but we don't know if he and Megatron are same or separate.

  6. I wonder if there is some color correcting they still have to do to Grimlock in the movie or if the coloring pattern they have here is just for the toy line only?

  7. It would be pretty cool if they had Sky Byte in it...as well as slapper

    1. Sky Byte would be great in this one but I don't think that the toy showed is even part of the AoE line. Roadbuster is also pictured in this and he's definitely not part of the movie line.

  8. The bottom line is I just have to wait and see if Bay actually changed his approach and right now no body knows. My butt will be in a seat, looking for death matches and a good story. Bays trailers are tricky, what you think might be happening is not even close when you see the movie, not even close to my speculation. So now I take everything with a grain of salt. Just have to wait and see. Its still fun to speculate we cant help ourselves and we are all hoping for the best Transformer movie ever. Let us prey.

  9. There are 2 different grimlocks here. Im still sticking by my thought process that grimlock will be regular sized through most the movie then will roid rage at the end. Too many differences for it just to be different toy classes.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Are you saying you think he's going to get bigger? No way. 2 different Grimlock's...different toy classes I would imagine

    1. His name is Shark Byte. He is a Predacon from Robots In Disguise.

    2. I don't figure he is in the movie though. Probably just part of the toy line.

  12. four of the dinobots look like autobots, either you can see the insignia or they have blue eyes...but the raptor has red so I would assume hes a decepticon dinobot

  13. Wow.....Faith in Hasbro restored for transformers....now fix the star wars line and stop giving us crappy articulation.

  14. Tfcollect: I'm not impressed at all. I mean for the most part, I like the Dinobots, I love the movie line leader prime verses the first edition. But the voyager class and those deluxe class! Horrible. This is the worst. @DUDEMUS: I absolutely thank you, your last post seemed to have been a sort of a pre-warning of what to expect so I'm not that suprised. But they made a terrible mistake. This will be have a turn out like DOTM. Its a shame that the DOTM line looks incredible compared to these.

    1. I can respect your opinion but as a collector also I have to disagree. I am really liking these figures much more than the previous lines. Only one here I am really not liking is Gears and Slash.

Regardless of not liking them I will end up buying them anyways as part of the collection. Which is one of the things Hasbro banks on. Damn you Hasbro. You have predicted collector's all too well.

  15. ABout sizes of the character: if some of you think Galvatron as too small as a toy. Remember that Brawl and Bonecrusher were deluxe class toys, but they were only slightly smaller than Optimus. Starscream was Voyager, but he was taller than Optimus.

    ReplyDelete
  16. if Galvatron is a man made transformer in this, I will be pissed.

    1. there's a big chance that galvatron could be man made, btw check a look at his face:

  17. Tfcollect:look, Galvatron without any doubt shouldve been a leaderclass figure. He's the main antagonist in this film and more than like will be the main character to bang out with Optimus. They did this with the DOTM Megatron, gave us a voyager class. Actually hasbro did even release a leaderclass Optimus for DOTM either and you see how well that went. Galvatron a voyager?...no way buddy. Really take a look at this those deluxe classes. Theyre terrible, and the Character that I had been ampted up about (Hound) I hate it. It looks like large cyberverse figure with advanced articulation. They don't look good, ROTF toyline will become legendary. Hands down the greatest Transformers toyline ever when it comes to detail and paint apps, articulation, movie accuracy.etc. from there the movie line went downhill and is continuing on a downward spiral. They did it, sacrificed detail for simplicity. Not going to sell well in my opinion.

    1. Name and alternate mode are only things we now know about him. Let's wait and we'll see his role in the film.

    2. There's hardly been any Decepticon leader classes lately.

    3. Tfcollect:I agree dante, nor have there been many human alliance decepticons niether. Speaking of which. I haven't seen any in this series unless I've missed something. I really like the series especially "Soundwave" he's was the best one if I do only say so myself...again the Dinobots look really good, but the deluxe class really look cheap and lack creative ingenuity. Showed my son the sight and he was thrown for a loop. He doesn't like them niether and he's 14yrs old. So it goes without saying the target for this series will have a mixed review from children to adult collectors alike. I'm just not impressed at all.

  18. The Dinobots look great, they took it there with dinobots. Buuuuut!...the other characters? I really think Hasbro could've done a much better job creatively on the deluxe class like BB,Slingshot etc. They're just too simplistic, this will not appease to collectors I personally feel like kids will be displeased with these. Again the dinobots:thumbs up. The vehiclebots, voyager, deluxe:thumbs down.

  19. If that's Galvatron, then I'm very disappointed. He looks (even in the movie clip) more like a Con frontline grunt, then he does the fearsome Leader of the Cons.
I do like the Dinobots, alot. Love the Transformers Prime-esque paint scheme of Bee (the 2014 Camaro. Not crazy about the 'old' Camaro).
I like Drift, except for his head. That gold head just looks wrong on him, just the coloring.
I'm still not feeling Crosshairs. Maybe after I see him in the movie I'll warm up to him, or not. Jury is still out on that one.
Have I mentioned that I REALLY don't like Galvatron's look ( he looks more like freaking Cyclonus).
    I WANT Jetstorm.
I don't like the beard on Hound, at all.
I do like and do want Windblade.

    1. I agree with you on Galvatron. If they were insistent on giving him a god awful look they could have at least used his colors.

I keep hoping the cgi wasn't all done and they will slap more paint on him so he's not so plain.

    2. have hope! The first trailer for dark of the moon had sentinel prime as gold and yellow. In the final version, however, he's red! So there's still hope!

    3. Tfcollect:I'm with you on Galvatron. I also believe he shouldve been a leader class and I'm sticking to my guns on that one. Drift just doesn't do it for me nor bumblebee. He looks like the first one just with black by design. Crosshairs? Wow, looks like he was just thrown together. I'm going to wait to see with my own eyes though, but I'm feeling like I really don't think it'll change much. Fingers crossed.

    4. Now that I think if Kre-O toys really are tied in the movie, Galvatron will receive update that make him larger...very much larger (hinted by Factory Battle set). And perhaps a Leader or even Supreme class toy could come of him.

    5. I also agree with tens, I'm just annoyed that galvatron looks the way he is, Megatron in revenge of the fallen looks stronger than Galvatron in age of extinction, Megatron is suppose to be upgraded not fricking down graded, Galvatron doesn't even look that evil, they should have kept horns on galvatron, his robot mode(chest piece) also looks shit as hell..

      Delete
    6. Ok granted Bay has kept Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus (not that he had a lot choice..Cullen is Optimus) I just think it would be nice if he kept some things. Kind of like a nod to fans. Imo the right color on Galvatron would have been a great nod. Trying to stay hopeful that Galvatron is kind just unfinished and will surprise all of us in the movie. I'm not going to call his look shit yet though since we haven't had a great look at the cgi model as of yet.

      Still hating Crosshairs though.

  21. I think Galvatron looks awesome, bitch looks heavyduty and mean. I like the looks of everything. I do agree that the CGI needs to be fine tuned

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dont forget this is MBay, and just because he used Galvatron, doesnt mean he made him a leader. I suspect Galvatron was made by humans from reverse engineering megatron left over scraps. He may not be a "leader" until the end or next movie by Unicron.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Martinus Prime2/17/2014 10:52 AM

I like that we now have Galvatron in the new movie and I'm fine with him being a truck, I'm not that shocked about that, like Nelson from S4TE said we would.
Maybe he is a man made TF. That could explain his reactor in the chest, could be nuclear reactor, like Gypsy Danger from Pacific Rim.

I realy like all the Dinobots, they are awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. The dinobots are going to be so badass in the movie!

Like you the truck doesn't surprise me just wish there was something about Galvatron we could look at and go hey! I remember that! Like in the first movie with the "one shall stand. One shall fall" line.

I more than ever don't want Unicron in the movies! He may be a ferris wheel or something.

Complaints aside I think the movie is looking awesome and anxious to see it

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the Dinobots design look awesome ( but disappointed because that's not the look of what the dinobots should look like or the types of dinosaurs choosen, looks like I'll be skipping this movie too, I mean Grimlock with "horns", really?) I'm hoping there will be movie color metallic grey/silver versions of them, not crazy about the color coded kiddy versions displayed for the Toy Fair. Apparently my guess is that the Dinobots will be fighting a huge Decepticon in the flick & with 3 1/2 of the Dinobots being bipeds (in beast mode, anyway) there's a good chance that they actually be able to MERGE/ COMBINE! Stay tuned .....

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like the horns and ok with the coloring as well. G1 colors would be nice but that's not going to happen. I don't think there will be any combining however I am expecting one or two of them to die.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like Drift, except for his head. The coloring just looks badly out of place. Crosshairs does look thrown together. I'm still not sure how I feel about Crosshairs, as a whole. I still think Bay reusing the Corvette for a new character is just lazy.
I really do like the Dinobots, especially Slug and the Raptor.
I think Hound would look so much better without that ridiculous beard.
Having watched and really liked Transformers Prime, I love that AOE Bee has his Transformers Prime paint scheme.
I just do not like Galvatron being that silver Con. He's better suited for a Con like Cyclonus.

    1. Tfcollect:"Drift"face sculpt imo isn't that bad, I think if they would've stayed true to the movie color scheme it would've looked much better, the black and gold would've been perfect. Hopefully Hasbro will do a repaint later on.

I would indeed be better if Galvatron has some purple in it instead of the blue, but I think his robot mode looks awesome in the teaser.

I also really love how the Dinobots look! I'm okay with them looking a bit more like dragons, it's awesome. This a good and probably original way to bring the Dinobots to the big screen. I'm really excited what story they brought up for their origins. Something Bay thought was silly and couldn't be done.
I'm betting if he went with a normal dinosaur story, that would be less interesting.
I also expect some Dinobots won't make it to the end of the movie and die.

My guess is also they'll be fighting one or more huge Decepticons, that's everbody's guess. What other chance do the Decepticons have against those huge Dinobots.
My guess is the Decepticons have also some kind of huge dragon or maybe a dragon combiner.

  29. Martinus Prime2/17/2014 2:35 PM

I'm hoping the Dinobots do get some of those colors in the movie and don't stay all-over grey.

What I didn't expect, is that do like the cgi movie face of Hound. You see it on one of the toyboxes cardboard.
I didn't think I would say this, bc at first I hated the pole-face of Hound, but the cgi movie face looks badass, even the beard does so!

    1. Tfcollect:I do too. Its like the G2 series, we seen them with beards and all with even more humanoid faces sculpts. It seems that MBay has taken this installment into the second generation of the MBay lore. These new characters have more personality within there faces than the previous 3movies. I'm all for it, the Second Gen of Bayformers. How that sound? Lol

    2. Martinus Prime2/18/2014 2:06 PM

2nd Gen Bayformers sounds good to me too. Lol ;-)
I think we will get a very good reason why we have all these human looking faces. Maybe indeed bc of human made Transformers.

  30. The Dinobots appear like they have some sort of medieval armor, so their like ancient knights I guess?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am figuring Galvatron kills one or two of the dinobots early on and that's what is going to fuel them throughout the rest. I am halfway thinking the dinobots will be in a musuem to start out with as part of some ancient artifacts. Their origin has gotta be badass though!

    ReplyDelete
  32. One point to keep in mind with the whole Galvatron size argument... At some point the dinos are gonna join the bots... There is gonna have to be a big enough threat for them to fight. What if early stunticon type rumors were not completely off? Who says that Motormaster must be their leader? Even of its not something like that, there are too few cons in this first assortment
something is being held back. Some serious trump card..... I hope....

    1. Tfcollect:agree. Well we had seen all these other vehicles throughout the filming of the movie including these little chevy beats (I believe they are called) which I think are drones and possi le the man made decepticons "if that theory is true"but what I haven't seen as of yet is the deluxe "Lockdown" that's what I'm keeping my eyes peeled for. On how they are going to incorporate the cannonface to the action figure. Now for the "Voyagers" the more I look at "Hound"the more I'm beginning to like him, he's growing on me. I just hope this isn't the final paint job, I wanting to see him with the drab green and camoflage like "Ldr Brawl" then I will be absolutely sold. The transformation on display isn't complete his shoulder attachment isn't closed completely and that's what threw me off at first glance. His ammo forarms are hellfire, I'm loving it. "Galvatron is going to be a hard sell for me, no visible truck parts leads me to believe that its all going to be stored on his back. (Shellformer) I'm pray that he gets a leader class, I also think "Hound"should have a leader class too. Now looking at the leader class Optimus Prime vs 1st Edition Optimus Prime? Hands down the leader class on display is the winner here. I hope he has the press release paint apps with the silver instead of that ugly gray. "Slingshot"is also growing on me, but I still believe that they went a little toooo simplistic. Hes alright, but he could've been much better, Drift also. "Bumblebee just downright "SUCK" his robot mode is horrific, I hope his upgrade robot mode is much better. Like TF Movie, his 76'camaro robot mode was awful but his upgrade was hellfire. I like that the alt mode though. "Grimlock" voyager dinomode looks better than the leaderclass in my opinion, both robot modes however are great. Cant wait to get an in hand look and transformation on the Characters that Ifavor the most.

    2. Tfcollect:what would be really great, if later down the line Hasbro will produce a leader version of Optimus Prime Flatnose rusty truck figure.I doubt it but it would be nice.

  36. The question for me is this: are Galvatron and Megatron one and the same? Maybe not in this movie. And in other TF continuities, Galvatron and Megatron are separate characters. Hell, even the G1 cartoon couldn't decide, as a grave marking statue of Megatron was seen in the Decepticon crypt in the episode "Starscream's Ghost."

That said, the first character I thought of when we first saw Galvatron cut a car in half was Megatron.
