Transformers 5 Is Not Part of A New Trilogy

In an interview with IGN, Transformers movie franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonvantura clarified a touch the new about Transformers 5 coming in 2016. The main bit is the plan is to essentially continue as they did with the previous three films as in they are not a planned in advance trilogy but really treat each as a standalone film.
"We're not planning on doing a trilogy," he told Roth. "We're not not planning on doing a trilogy. It's really a one-movie-at-a-time philosophy. It feels a little arrogant. Both [director Michael Bay] and I feel like it's a little arrogant of us to presume success each time. We know our fans are really out there and they're going to come, so we presume a certain amount of success. But all the energy will be thrown into the next movie, if we're lucky enough to get there."

Of course, a lot of studios have been angling their respective franchises for spinoffs -- Disney's Star Wars, for example, or Sony's Spider-Man, Fox's X-Men, etcetera. However, while di Bonaventura and crew have talked about going that route with Transformers, that may not necessarily be the case for future installments, at least for now.

"I think one of the things that people underestimate about the Transformers mythology is how rich it is," he continued. "If you actually look at the bible, if you would, there is an enormous number of characters; there's a helluva lot of storylines, etcetera. Honestly, there's been no discussion of it because we've been in the business of making it bigger and bigger. I think a lot of those spinoffs tend to happen when something's plateaued. We're not at that place yet, hopefully. We're going to find out with the audience."
I think the best comparison are the Star Trek films. Star Trek II, III, IV and clearly a trilogy. Maybe they didn't start that why but by story design and theme they became one. However, the rest of the films in the series clearly are not as each is its own separate thing that might carry over elements but not really connected in any meaningful ways. The first three Transformers films are like that and it seems they will carry that on with the next.

  1. Lorenzo di Bonvantura must be out of mind, really. So Transformers5 is going to feature another all new cast? And not connected to Transformers4 ? Seriously?
A new trilogy starting with Transformers4 now and keeping the new cast for three movies makes sense.
Three disconnected movies and new cast each time... DUMB AND LAME !

    1. He never said anything about a new cast each time. The word "trilogy" generally implies that they have a three-movie plan/storyline laid out from the start and are anticipating each movie to do well enough to warrant sequels. What he is saying is that they're approaching it one movie at a time -- if T4 is successful they will make T5, if T5 is successful they'll make T6, and so on -- rather than just assuming right from the start that each one will make enough money to justify them making another. This strategy is used by almost every studio nowadays.

    2. well i like how marvel is doing it having a story in the background of the single movies...leading up to another one something like that leading to unicron would be cool
