Transformers: Age of Extinction Top Movie of 2014

The box office totals are in for the third weekend since Transformers: Age of Extinction's release. The movie is the top movie of all time in China and now it records itself as being the top movie of 2014 with a worldwide gross of $752.3 million with still a dozen or so major markets about to get the movie now that the World Cup is over. The previous record holder, X-Men: Days of Future Past was at $731.4M.

In the States, Transformers 4 continues to loose steam with a weekend total of $16.3 million for a 56% drop from the previous weekends for a US total of $208.8 million that is expected to top out around $255M. Worldwide, the movie remains very strong with a $102M take for a total of $543.5M. Of that $102 take, $20.4 million is from its opening weekend in the UK and $16.2 from opening in Mexico. The movie did drop in China by 52% but still easily outpacing the US with a $25 million weekend for a $262.6 million. While the United States isn't going to provide the expected boost to the $1 billion goal, the huge international success of the movie along with upcoming release dates to go in Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan indicates that the movie will reach the goal and just might surpass Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

    2. Well, first I'll try once.
We have asubscription system in France that allows you to go as often as you can to the movies, you just pay a monthly fee.
So at worst I'll only lose time...

  3. The movie was simply amazing, Lockdown definitely stole the show as the main villain. The ending was best and most exciting cliffhanger of the four movies. For transformers 5 and 6, I hope Michael Bay stays on to direct because other potential good directors such as J.J Abrams and James Cameron are currently working on Star wars and Avatar 2. In terms of characters I would like to see Hot Rod/Smokescreen because it is perfect timing for him to come to earth to lead the Autobots against Galvatron while Optimus Prime is searching for his creators in space. I believe I speak for all us Transformers fans that this is a great opportunity to explore the world of Cybertron and the transformers origins. It would be interesting if Hot Rod/Smokescreen and Cade have a certain rivalry on who is best to lead other Autobots because Cade and Optimus share a common trust and respect whilst Hot/Smokescreen has the desire to become the next Prime. Also I think it would be better if T5 comes out for 2017 and not 2016 because this gives ILM more time to develop the CGI for any space sequences. This series just keeps on getting more and more exciting! Bring on Transformers 5!

    1. and based on what bay has done before, 5 wont include the dinobots and will probably have headmasters and targetmasters next....and the main villian will be black arcahana ...dont expect any bots except prime and bumblebee in the next one......

  4. The rest of the world must have a lot lower standards as far as storytelling, acting, and characterization than the US, which seems crazy to me, but the evidence seems to be there. This movie was an abomination. Easily the worst of the four, and that's definitely saying something. If Michael Bay creates any more of these abortions, then I will not be paying to see them. I will never pay money to see another Bay film. Period. If someone new takes the helm, then I will give Transformers movies another chance. Until then, I'm done.

    1. @Anonymous 7/15/2014 10:26 AM: you are no one. Just a single guy. The sad thing is those that enjoyed the first three movies and waste time reading and trusting people like you that are bashing the franchise for whatever lame reason with your pathetic lies instead of going to the theater and watch the movie. Transformers4 is the best movie of the franchise so far and it deserves its success, people that watched the first three movies should avoid listening to those like you and go in an IMAX 3D theater or the best theater near them to watch it.

    2. Maybe its because outside the USA there is still 7 billion humans who can pay and go watch a film. This is what i hate about this blog its all US based, the comments, the news updates 90% of it is all US related

    4. @Anonymous7/15/2014 10:58 AM And just like me, you are also no one. Just a single guy. So I guess each of our opinions carry the same weight. The "lame reason" I said the things I said about this movie is because its TRUE (which would be the opposite of "pathetic lies"). If you think this movie was "the best movie of the franchise", I would seriously question your ability to evaluate anything. If someone wants to "avoid listening" to me, that is their prerogative (it is their money to waste on a ticket), but at least they can't say that they weren't warned.

Anonymous7/15/2014 2:50 PM "7 billion humans" outside of the US that have disposable income enough to waste money going to a movie? A lot of theaters in Africa, South America, Siberia, the Australian Outback, Tibet, Myanmar, Afghanistan, & Central America are there? I think your numbers are a tad optimistic. Maybe 3 billion people that live in areas with theaters that also have money to waste on a movie. I don't know that actual number and I doubt anyone does, but my point was that those people must have lower standards for the things I mentioned than the US audience. And the box office numbers are proving me right.

      Delete
    5. Obviously the numbers outside the US are going to be greater because of one simple thing, population. You are comparing europe a whole continent to bloody USA, you are c omparing china 1 billion residents comparedto 300 million usa, seriouslyyyyy

      Delete
    6. Maybe I'm not explaining this very well. Alright, let's say that the T4 makes $1 billion worldwide, and that the US accounts for $255 million of that. That's roughly 300 million people accounting for over 26% of the movies sales. The "rest of the world" combined (roughly "7 billion humans") make up the other 74%. That means there are approximately 0.1 tickets sold per capita in the "rest of the world", and in the US it is 0.85 per capita, so 8 times the rest of the world.

All I'm saying is that nearly everyone in the US has money to blow on movie tickets, but has not done so to any great extent with this movie. Most of the rest of the world does not have this luxury, so the people in those areas that do must be going to it frequently, and since I believe it is a terrible movie, I say the "rest of the world must have lower standards...".

    7. Or more spare time to spend...

    8. So you are trying to say that US have more sense and have higher standards compared to the rest of the world? Lol no offense the USA?? Hahaha. I am from the UK and i think the US is great but seriously that is just a silly thing to say.

  5. "...just might surpass" ? or "Transformers 4 will definetely surpass Iron-man 3 or even Frozen" for good ? If not there is no point these movies were lames comparing to this historical monstrosity !

  7. Perhaps it is doing well because of people like Anonymous7/15/2014 7:49 AM who has seen it "6 times!!". It like it is getting a whole mass of new people in, it is just getting the ones that are now old enough to have a job and can afford to see it multiple times.

Personally, I have seen it once and now I am waiting for the Blu-ray to see it again.

Also may not be the story it self that is getting people in, but the marketing of it in China to the Chinese people.

  8. Edit: Like it isn't getting....

  9. i guess ill kill myself now because i preferred 3 over 4 ...everyone is entitled to an opinion positive or negative..it appears based on the box office i am in the minority i just hope they have a better story for 5....i did like the actors better in this one though...i do prefer mark walberg to shia

  10. I could care less what it made in hard to breath in China. I'm sorry but it should have made at least 300 million bare minimum. The fact its only going to make 250 million in the US speaks volumes. I'm sorry but that's sad, time for Bay to go by by.

    1. @Anonymous 7/15/2014 10:42 PM: speaks nothing. It just tells that too many people in the US nowadays have had their brain fried. Too many drugs. Outside US people have a better functioning brain.

  13. That's great that your in love with China and other countries, I'M NOT I care about the numbers here and Bay is all played out, The only thing good about AOE was LockDown, the rest was same goofy doofy crap. Come on man get rid of Brains just so doofy. OH here come those scary cars again ha ha ha ha ha just dumb

  14. It's an interesting thing when Americans who hate the Bayverse TF cry and holler about how the Chinese are so dumb and stupid to absolutely love these movies. Yet, facts have shown that the Chinese have a higher rate of graduating students than the US as well as a higher degree of adapting to basic electronics and developing advanced automated systems. And not just the Chinese but the rest of the world, too. Something to think about.

  15. AOE is moving at a snails pace just to get to 250 million in US. Fell off the cliff, sad

  16. I for one was very infuriated that the protion was soooo heavily based in china and US (as usual) and the bare minimum for the rest of the world, they made all the budget $250 million money back from the product placement deals, without even selling any tickets or merchandise, so i am shocked that they didnt spend more money promoting more all over the world, i guarantee you the movie would have made much more by now

    ReplyDelete
  17. might not even make 250 million in US. It almost seems like Bay completely abandon the true fans in the US, all they care about is China, China, China and WOW!!! did he pay a price here in the states. I thought for sure it would coast to 300 million domestically, that movie came and went at the speed of sound, she's on it's way out.

    1. It's not Bay fault if a large percentage of the population in the US nowadays is using heavy drugs and can't understand and enjoy fast paced sci-fi action movies...
It's people in the US that are out of mind.

  18. There are true fans everywhere on the planet, not just the USA... and I can tell you we went to see the film because of the Transformers, not because of Michael Bay or the fact it was set in the city we live in. Hong Kong residents and Chinese are picking the film to shreds just as much as US critics are for all its faults and plot failures! I tell ya if I could go up the hill and onto the other side of Hong Kong Island and be in the majestic Wushan Valley I'd be doing so every single day! I'll also tell ya that Hong Kong does not have glass houses or ancient ruins in any of its CBD's... we've been left wondering why they dumbed down the city effectively making it look like a US city... when it is nothing like that in real life. Having said that it is still going strong here because people love action films and anything with giant warrior robots (especially the franchised ones like Transformers or Gundam) no matter how bad the plot holes are.

  19. Its a fictitious movie which has been made never expecting to win an oscar.
The majority of people who go to see this dont want a documentary on the countries where its set.
Do something worthwhile with your time, get a degree in cinematography and make your own movie.
Quit slating a film that delivers what it intends, waring robots kicking the crap out each other, with some crude jokes thrown in.

its not a geography lecture its fantasy it doesn't need to be accurate.
The world would be a sadder place had these films not been made.

I would thank bay for stepping up and giving ever kid of the 80's what they spent the 90's craving.

Plot was not a problem. simplistic and sometimes not consistant at all,
but not to the point of pushing me out of the movie.
    .
Characters are great, humour did much better than previously, action is really enoyable,
music works well, dinobots are awesome and get enough screen time...

    1. its not g1 its an attempt to combine all the previous transformers series..comics, games cartoon...my issue is that they arent really consistant with the story i dont mind them taking elements from everything but they really need to plan it out better story wise..so i expect targetmasters and headmasters in the next one..

  25. This is NOT G1 ! Wake up this has elements of G1 but this is not G1 . Transformers are on 4th movie ! Many things will be correct it through the years but i agree slightly that a new scriptwriter from old days might be better for transformers !

One shall stand one shall fall . Surely TF5 will have an upgraded USA audience also for sure ! Transformers gains ground movie by movie !
