Transformers 4 Crosses $1 Billion in Box Office

The executives at Paramount and Michael Bay are probably very pleased right now as Transformers: Age of Extinction is the first film of 2014 to cross the $1 billion threshold (and 2nd film of the franchise to do so). The landmark was reached mostly due to very strong international sales of $763.8M in sales where $317M was from China alone. Ironically, TF4 achieved a franchise low in the United States with box office sales at $241.2M. The new landmark is to beat Dark of the Moon's $1.12B worldwide total (so another $100 million) but that doesn't really matter as the main goal was reached. No weekend breakdowns as TF4 dropped out of the top 10 in the States. On a somewhat related note, Guardians of the Galaxy (great movie) broke all expectations and came within sniffing distance of TF4's $100M best weekend of 2014 with a US total of $94M.

“Along with the immensely talented and versatile Mark Wahlberg, the great Steven Spielberg as executive producer, and a superb cast, he created a powerful re-launch of this franchise. This tremendous accomplishment – to be the first film of 2014 to earn over $1 billion at the box office – proves once again that Michael is a world-class filmmaker at the top of his game," said Grey, whose studio last week extended and expanded its deal with Bay.

  3. As much as I hate to say it, Bay knows what the hell he's doing. Most filmmakers do not reach the 1B mark once in their career...he has done it twice in a few years...pretty amazing.

  5. I am proud to be a Transformers fan . One of the greatest anyway with 1.272 TFS figures as of yet !!! Yes and Michael Bay knows exactly what he is doing . So The first goal was reached . Peace Of cake . The second task indeed is TF3 surpassing and the 3rd to beat the horrible Iron-Man 3 . This is not difficult but to reach Frozen 50 millions above is tricky and a little difficult ...BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE . Time will tell .

  6. OK he concurred China and other parts of the globe, now he has to get the fire burning back here in the states again.Maybe he will take into space like Guardians of the Galaxy did. I hope so.

    1. Again the Guardians Of The Galaxy crap ? That movie is just plain awful. No matter how much the Disney marketing machine brainwashes people and pays critics !

    2. I've liked GotG just as much as I've enjoyed TF4... what's wrong in liking both Gucci's and trift shop clothing? Or cavior and hamburgers? I liked the 2nd "Purge" movie and Edge of Tomorrow. I've liked How to Train Your Dragon (1 and 2) and few bits from This is The End. I liked stupid Twilight saga and both The Hunger Games incarnations. I even started thinking that LEGO the Movie was/is one of the best surprises in years. There is no reason for calling any movie bad or worse, they are all made for different viewers thus you are not forced to go and watch what you're trying to avoid - for eg. in my case romantic comedies. Sheeess... - P.

  7. Crap? OK, Again I just hope Transformers goes into space, in other words don't give that crybaby crap , OH its too expensive after making all this money in communist China. Meanwhile an unknown movie spends the whole time in space and will probably beat AOE at the box office in the US. Saddens me. Transformers should be number 1 in the US and the world. Period!!

    1. I never understood why they keep repeating that all-space movie is too expensive when George Lucas could send his Jedi right where we want our Con vs Bots fighting just how many years ago...? And look at the budget...

  8. Something left out of this discussion every time is the changing paradigm. Slowly bit surely the era of traditional cinema is passing in the US. I believe transformers is a great example. A lot of people went and saw it within the opening weeks, but the number of people willing to set through a tremendously long movie at a theater are fewer, and less yet the number willing to pay outrageous prices. Especially with the inevitable DVD release on a couple of months behind and home theaters reaching high quality levels at affordable prices. Its not that other parts of the world don't have this tech, bit we are exceptionally spoiled by it and it is changing our movie habits. What they did not make here at the theater will be compensated by DvD sales and digital rental.

  9. I don't believe that for a second, that's just an excuse. How come Avatar made over 700 million in the US, Avengers over 600 million, Dark Knight over 500 million because if its a great movie people will come out in droves, period. I didn't hate any of the Transformers movies. To me the only thing that was great in AOE was LockDown and his lore and mythology, it was awesome. The rest was typical Bay and people thought he was going in a different direction like he said but he did not change his approach, he even went back to Chicago and brought back that dumb goofy doofy Brains. Just dumb.

    1. Did you go see the movie? Oh you did! Then Bay doesn't care what you think of his decisions. He,the studio, the theaters, everyone involved already got your money

    5. yeah they got us in with the dinobots who i bet are not going to be in the next one they will just "dissapear" next up the targetmasters and headmasters..well bay you wont make a billion dollars on that...and they will make the junkions the creators of the transformers just sayin

      Delete
    6. Its simple, really. Avatar was sold to the country as the this massive leap in 3d films and was a "theater experience." As for Avengers and Dark Knight, you need to be honest. Comic book heroes have a far deeper and historic draw than our beloved robots. There are still a few movie going generations around that had no childhood with transformers, but can all relate to Batman ot Iron man. Lastly... Check your calendar. Those movies are all a couple years old. I said "changing paradigm" which is a process. I think we are still a few years out from a complete shift, but going back to Avatar, filmmakers are absolutely going to have to start making "experiences" that cannot be gotten at home if they want to keep things alive.

    7. IN other words we will get better 3D display and maybe 4D / 5D added with time? That's something you can't get at home. Imagine the audience watching a horror movie and feeling heat and smoke from burning forest (just an example). Eating some popcorn in this kind of situation... not so good idea...? XD Game consoles can give you vibrations, why cinema seats can't? Tho I think this kind of experience is not my thing... I just wish all the directors could use the 3D technic better. In TF4 I loved this scene where you can see "dust flakes" swirling as Lockdown takes Prime and Tessa aboard his ship. Same with the drooooooollllling Grimlock and some "waterfall" and falling snow scenes.

  10. 3 times i saw the movie with my friends all of them said that was fucking amazing and open the world of Transformers like a ton !!! The movie will be the movie of the year hate or not hate !

    ReplyDelete
  11. And yes i saw the TF4 movie 3 times but so all the others that spread hate all over the net ! Anyway they must change screen writer not Bay . Bay is the best for Transformers hate it or not :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I just wish the movie's Bay does weren't so goofy. No one can do action sets like Bay, he's the best but the movies are so goofy.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The screenwriter is goofy not Michael Bay . I agree for a new screenwriter jumping the board !

  14. Reason why it didnt make that much in USA simple thing, marketing!!! Look at Batman vs Superman its coming out in 2 years time about a month before transformers 5 and they have already started marketing Batman vs Superman woth that comi con clip and releasing those pictures. Now i for one believe B vs S is going to smash the vox office i actually think its going to be the highest grossing film of all time, they hardly need to market it but they still do! TF needs to market itself much more! Fair enough you got tv clips and posters but seriously give the general public a bit more be more creative, especially if number 5 is coming out a month after Batman vs Superman

    1. I disagree, marketing is part of it but if it was truly a great movie people would have been hanging from the rafters. There is cool scenes and action sets and second to none CGI and special effects but the movie as a hole is just so dumb and goofy , Bay just can't get away from the poor quality movie script. After 4 movies its never going to change, more great action sets and CGI and effects but horrible story and scripts, just too dam goofy

      Delete
    2. I also wish to disagree on this matter. Movie trailers and interviews are more than enough to help you make a decision if you want to go see for eg. Trans4mores in the cinema or not. What else do you need, seriously? I asked pretty much same question earlier: what kind of marketing you people expect? Cause I never saw anything except flyers and tv spots in my country. That's always more than enough for me - plus if you want to know more about the title you're interested in all you need is a review. Or a fan rant on YouTube or something... getting 2nd hand opinion in the era of World Wide Web is not so difficult even in the country side. You've got newspapers as your last resort. Being a cinema lover / going to the cinema does not require a lot of effort from you (except for some money). I dunno why people keep complaining as if "bigger marketing" for TF4 would bring bigger audience. It wouldn't. Crossing out few cursing lines from the script probably would tho. Marketing means nothing, big names like Wahlberg or Tucci mean nothing. All you need is one impressive story to draw people. I can't see how people would even want to see Batman v Superman... I mean, Superman is cool, Batman is great... but mixing them together...? It seriously bothers me. Does not seem right from whatever reason. Sounds even more riddiculous than making a live-action version of Transformers 1986 The Movie or a cross-over of TF and My Little Pony. Tho I would probably pay to see both examples - just cause it has "Transformers" name slapped on it. As for G.I.Joe & TF - nope.

  16. Transformers 5 will be out 2017 NOT 2016 and will be match ONLY Avatar 3 for sort . B Vs S cannot match Transformers anyway with marketing or NOt . Generally i agree :)

  17. Transformers 5 is comfirmed for a June 2016 release, pre production and production begins in 4 months time

  18. Transformers has not a confirmation date yet as i said before . Di Bonaventura says that 2017 is the most approaching time . 2016 is so wrong with so many movies on schedule . Give us link NOT say something without proof from a man that is marked here like Anonymous ! I hear that Tf5 is programmed for 2017 and TF6 for 2020 . That's the most logical dates . These type of a movie is very hard to produce by ILM and Paramount as well as Bay and Co. So be it ;)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's difficult to produce in 2 years? Transformers 1 debuted in 2007 and Rotf in 2009... DOTM went big in 2011... all these movies had better CGI than TF4 - it's not difficult to produce the effect - it's the money issue. They cutted the budget by skipping transformation scenes (Hound and Crosshairs never transformerd ON-SCREEN, and Drift transformed only once! -.-'). Also if you watched this movie several times you probably saw same lazy animation I did - few times the crew animating Megatron and Bumblebee took a day off or just fell asleep while rendering their images ;-/ It was the first time I got disappointed in visual effects. I think that in 5th installment they will kill Hound and Crosshairs just to skip the need of transforming them or something... Lower costs. I wish TF5 = 2016 and TF6 = 2018. After that 2020 = a reboot with Nolan's treatment, please. I want to watch a great TF movie while still young, lol.

  25. just go to TFW2005.com, and scroll down a little ways. But he always says this crap, just put a pile of cash on his desk and he's in. I for one am ready for someone else, after 4 movies Bay's approach is all played out.

  26. Its starting to swirl around now, I'm starting to hear it a lot. People want to know if Michael Bay is going to direct Transformers 5 or not. The problem with him is he's a pain in the ass, he never really says yes but he never really says no. Even in that article you still don't really no what he's going to do. He loves it he loves making us wonder. I can't stand that crap, I want to know so I can get an idea of whats to come. Oh well we are stuck in the muck until he officially announces his plans and god knows when that will be.

    1. In theory that's one wise approach cause he will build tension and make media constantly repeat headlines like "Will M. Bay direct TF5?", "Bay asks for more money to direct TF5" and so on. Every month or so he will keep reminding us that this sequel is going to hit the screen sooner or later. Seems like a good way to spread the word about it and keep people interested in the news. Those with hopes will read everything to see what Bay will or will not change in his TF version of Bayhem. People will keep debating, the title will remain in the spotlight. People's interest will not die and so expect crowds in the cinema in 2016 or 2017. Kids growing above the age rating will come see it, they will bring their parents, etc. Just wait for Bay to end his Bayformers life cicle and see a reboot. I'm waiting for it since 2007.
