Wahlberg: Bay Will Direct Transformers 5

In an interview with Collider to promote Ted 2, Mark Wahlberg indicate he thinks Michael Bay will be back in the director's chair for Transformers 5.
Collider: Do you have any update on the status of Transformers 5? Have you heard anything about what’s going on?
WAHLBERG: I don’t. Just that Akiva [Goldsman] and those guys are starting to write and break stories, and stuff like that. But [Michael] Bay is in Malta shooting Benghazi, and I’m in New Orleans shooting Deepwater. We’ll get together when he gets back.

Do you think he’ll still ultimately direct it?
WAHLBERG: Yes.

Do you know what your schedule will be, after you finish Deepwater Horizon?
WAHLBERG: Pete [Berg] and I are talking about doing another movie, after the first of the year. And (directors) Sean Anders and John Morris are working on something right now, that hopefully we’re going to do in the fall with Paramount. That’s another comedy, more in the vein of Midnight Run meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I just did Daddy’s Home, with Will Ferrell and those guys, and we’ve been talking about doing this thing.
I would be very surprised if Michael Bay turns down the chair. The Transformers franchise is essentially his puppy to do with as he will, something no other Hollywood director except maybe Spielberg and Peter Jackson has had. It is a rare level of power and even rarer level of wealth that doing each film brings him (~$100 million per). That is something that few could turn down as it would be like you saying no to a winning life-changing lottery ticket. Paramount and Hasbro have already bumped Transformers 5 back a year to accommodate Bay's desire to do a smaller scale movie and decompress after Transformers 4 so clearly they want him back. At this point the decision will probably hinge on what the Transformers Writers Room produces and does the resulting scripts interest him enough to continue on. Regardless of his choice to direct, he will always be an executive producer for the Transformers franchise with the influence that title brings on future movies.

  2. It sounds like Mark Wahlberg is going to try to get a role for the film. Personally,I kind of hope they move on from him altogether. I like him as an actor but I don't feel like he's a good fit for the Transformers movies or more accurately the role that he had.

I don't think there's really any question to if Bay will be directing. I don't even understand why he even says he might not. It is a good idea though that he's taking a little time away from it.

Just hoping that with all the new writers on board that maybe we will get a better story

  3. Dammit!! It's bad enough that Michael Bay is coming back to direct, he sucks. He pretty much ruined the movies along with the writers. But I hate how he keeps flip flopping. Says he's done after the 3rd one, comes back for the 4th, says he done after that, and now I have to see him ruin another Transformers movie. God I hate him.

    1. You dislike his movies. You don't know him to hate him. No one forces you to go or to keep track of what he does. That's on you buddy. No one else to blame.

Whether he ruined them or not is a matter of prospective. I don't they think they were great but they weren't god awful either. They were decent. So for me..they weren't ruined. See what I mean by perspective?

  4. Bay needs to go. I want an enjoyable story not one where it's mistake prone and full of plot holes.

    2. You do realize even the cartoons weren't perfect, right? the stories were enjoyable. Not to you but they were to many others. I'm indifferent to him directing another. it could always be worse director's..such as Uwe Boll. Bay looks tons better already, doesn't he?

  8. The transformers movies are the cinematic equivalent of Justin Bieber. They both make a lot of money but everyone (including their biggest fans) knows their awful.

  9. @ 3:08 not everyone thinks they are awful. Grew up watching the Transformers G1. That is a god awful comparison.

Here's the thing. The transformers movies aren't bad. They aren't perfect either but hell neither were the cartoons. That's the power of nostalgia.

In my opinion what is going on is they have been trying to give us both character development and the story. The problem comes in that there are too many characters to develop. Marvel is only managing to develop their characters because their characters can do stand alone movies. Unfortunately,Transformers cannot. It's a group movie. So what happens is trying to mix the two elements together we are getting what some people think are a jumbled mess full of plot holes.

What it comes down to is these supposed hardcore fans are not going to be happy no matter what kind of movie they get so they probably are better served not to see it and let people who are grateful that someone has attempted to make a live action Transformers movie discuss it without trolls and people trying to convince everyone else that the movies are horrible.

If you like it. Awesome. If you don't. That's ok too but just quit crying and spilling the same repeated dribble that you saw someone else say.

  11. I'm actually quite offended at 3:08. How dare you tell me what I do and don't like! How dare you tell me what I know and refuse to acknowledge. I very much enjoy all four transformers movies. They aren't masterpieces but they are very good movies. When your opinions are like that then keep them to yourself, jerk.

  14. you have to wonder why 12 writers are being tested to write a script for TF5 , Bay doesnt know what a script is , why bother ?

    1. Know why they are all rich and famous and you aren't? Because they know what they are doing. So why bother insulting?

  15. I am so tired of the back and forth and people wanting to say the movies aren't good. That Bay is a bad director. The writers did a poor job.

Tell you what. Why don't you all get together. Write your own script. Hunt down the studio. Present your script and prove you can do it better.

Don't just sit there and bitch and cry do something about it or shut the hell up.
