Transformers On National Toy Hall of Fame Shortlist (Updated)

The Strong's National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY has revealed that Transformers (in a picture using Metroplex) is one of twelve finalists for the National Toy Hall of Fame. The 12 finalists: bubble wrap, Care Bears, Clue, coloring books, Dungeons & Dragons, Fisher-Price Little People, Nerf, pinball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, swing, Transformers, and Uno.

The criteria for selection includes "Icon-status (the toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered); Longevity (the toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations); Discovery (the toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play); and Innovation (the toy profoundly changed play or toy design)." The museum's Toy Hall of Fame was started in 1998.

The current 59 inductees are: alphabet blocks, Atari 2600 Game System, baby doll, ball, Barbie, bicycle, Big Wheel, blanket, bubbles, Candy Land, cardboard box, checkers, chess, Crayola Crayons, dollhouse, dominoes, Duncan Yo-Yo, Easy-Bake Oven, Erector Set, Etch A Sketch, Frisbee, G.I. Joe, The Game of Life, Hot Wheels, hula hoop, jack-in-the-box, jacks, jigsaw puzzle, jump rope, kite, LEGO, Lincoln Logs, Lionel Trains, little green army men, marbles, Monopoly, Mr. Potato Head, Nintendo Game Boy, Play-Doh, playing cards, puppet, Radio Flyer Wagon, Raggedy Ann and Andy, rocking horse, roller skates, rubber duck, Rubik’s Cube, Scrabble, Silly Putty, skateboard, Slinky, Star Wars action figures, stick, Super Soaker, teddy bear, Tinkertoy, Tonka Trucks, Twister, and View-Master.

There doesn't seem to be a specific number of inductees from year to year but the average appears to be three to four. From a fan boy perspective I of course say Transformers but glad I don't have to do the narrowing down as I would just say "all of them" but if pressed would have to go with the swing, Nerf, coloring books, and pinball. The inductees will be chosen from a selection advisory committee and announced on November 10 at 10:30am.

Update: The Strong Museum of Play announced this years inductees as expected Transformers didn't make it. The chose three were Dungeons & Dragons, Fisher-Price's Little People and the swing.
