The post from his official site:
One month after that was a rumor from IESB.net that claimed Frank Welker might be days away from signing for the roll. Obviously anything from the horse's mouth so to speak is the more reliable source but a lot could have changed in the month and half since that post. Also notice the phrase of "offered any roles" which is much different then auditioned for roles or discussed roles. In other words, the possibility is still open to him being cast. Are you going to do any voices in the upcoming live-action TRANSFORMERS movie?
I am not really sure what's happening with the "Transformer" movie other than my talented friend Peter Cullen has been cast. Presently, I have not been offered any roles. They are doing a new series based on our old shows which neither Peter nor I were cast. I think Corey Burton is playing the new Megatron. He is a wonderful voice talent and a great guy, so it's nice to be replaced by folks you like at any rate.
Happy Holidays!

Considering the relatively small role Megatron plays in the movie, I don't see why not, but if spending $150 million to make a film and probably another $25 million plus to promote it, then I am sure there is pressure to get some A-list stars into the movie in some capacity while not costing a ton of money which voice work would fit the bill nicely. Either way, the movie opens soon, the advertising campaign has to gear up so an announcement has to come in the next few months one way or the other.
I wasn't crazy about the original megatron. I loved the one in beastwars. The only voice that I felt was the most important and couldn't be changed is "optimus - Peter Cullen". His voice is just part of who he is and if they cant use him or somebody similar, like the later version of optimus, then don't do it at all. It's like making a blonde superman.

I agree with the above comment. Cullen was the most essential but give us Welker too!! He's a great talent and is the voice of Megatron plus so many others. He's more talented that Cullen too so if Bay didn't like the old 80's Megatron I'm sure Welker could tweak it and improve upon it. Make all us geeks and nerds happy and cast that S.O.B.
ReplyDeleteP.S. And if Welker is cast the line, "You're an idiot, Starscream" needs to be immediatly added to the script.
Depending on how you read the post, it would seem Welker is saying Burton has been cast as Megatron for the new series, not the film.
ReplyDeleteMeh, we'll get an official announcement soon enough.
i agree with autobot5.. that's the way i read it... i don't think the movie has been decided yet
ReplyDeleteSo what's the new series about? Is it a spin off of G1 or brand new confusing stories like beast wars, energon, or cybertron. I have no clue whats going on in those shows and how or if they even tie back to G1.
ReplyDeleteAgree with the above: "You're an idiot, Starscream" is mandatory if Welker does get cast in the end, lol.
ReplyDeleteHe kinda defeats my hope with that post, but like it was said, there is still a chance. With post production still in the works I'll keep my fingers crossed. He would be a good addition regardless of how little screen time Megatron has.

ReplyDeleteBeast Wars was part of G1 continuity. The others aren't.
terrible that frank was not in the movie. optimus would be nothing without megatron. i was dissappointed frank welker is megatrom as peter is prime. no one can replace them in my book
