Transformers Week 2 Box Office

This week it was Transformers vs Harry Potter for the box office dollar and as expected Harry Potter won. According to CNN, Harry Potter 5 made and estimated $77.4 million over the weekend to Transformers $36 million. As a result, Potter made $140 million in the US and a huge $190.3 for 44 markets in other countries bringing its worldwide gross to $330.3 million. Transformers at the end of week two is sitting on $223 million for the U.S. and $98 for rest of the world with a total of $330 million. So technically Harry passed Transformers in its first week. However, Transformers still have France, Great Britan, Japan and a few other major markets to open in. Nor is the foreign gross estimate up to date.

The numbers are not surprising when its a new franchise vs an established franchise. Nor a surprise when Transformers was released on 4000 screens in the U.S. and piecemeal across the world (with major markets to go) and Harry Potter was released on on 9000 screens in the U.S. and worldwide in all markets.

While I think the 9000 screens is a bit excessive, Transformers decisions makers should note the success of the simultaneous worldwide release and copy it for Transformers II. Really though, considering the number of screens and the history of the Potter films, Transformers more then held its own. Usually in the face of such competition, everyone else gets lost in the crowd but instead had a weekend that most movies brag about. It should also be noted it "only" dropped 49% from the previous weekend. Considering the average film looses about 60-65% percent from one weekend to the next, that's a pretty darn good number. It looks like the race for summer box office champ is still undecided. Harry 5 is the last major film of this class for the summer. How much it drops next weekend might give a clearer picture of who ends up on top. I just want to hear the official news of a sequel.

  1. where are you getting this 9000 number from?

    boxofficemojo says

    transformers 4050 theaters
    harry potter 4285 theaters

  2. I'm afraid our opportunity to "take over" has failed. Too many "Harry" fans to compete with. Even though I saw it again Saturday, I can't do this by myself--or with a date.

  5. I'm crying on the inside because I am a huge fan and have been following all the news about this movie since it was first anounced and told everyone one I know about it and about this website and I still have not seen it and I live in the US. I even bought tickets for my brother and his wife and many of my coworkers have seen it. I cannot go until I get a babysitter and there is not many people my wife and I trust with our 1 year old son. God willing I'll finally get my son a babysitter this weekend and I can at last see it.

  7. dude... if it'll hurt the box office then why post it??? do you not want a sequel to be produced?? obviously not as anything likely t harm the box office takings will jeopardise the studio's desire to develop a #2.

    clown!

with regard to any sequel tho... i wonder if each new 'bot would get a new design/alt mode... or would hey run with bot/alt modes from #1? at least new characters will get introduced so might get good looks at protoform modes in daylight... rather than prime runnin away from prying eyes under the cover of dark, ironhide hiding in trees... and jazz crawling over rooftops.

when prime, ratchet, ironhide and jazz are stood (after bumblebee taken and just before prime says 'roll out')... where the hell are they? it looks to me they are already at hoover dam but prime then 'reads' the glasses and says 'the cube is 230 miles from here'... now i'm assuming the dam isn't 230miles deep... so where the hell are they? it seems t me bay just threw in additional shooting location... with no real purpose... else i've completely missed something. might they be stood at an observatory or something somewhere?

    anyone... any clues? please help
never been able to get .rar files to burn to disc after download anyway.

  8. They were at an observatory that was under renovation. Secluded, and had a connection to "space". (It's where Bumblebee took the kids after turning into the hot Camero--to witness the arrival of the other Autobots. After that they went to the alley for the "introduction".)

  10. I think that Harry Potter made more money also because they released it on 3D on the IMAX and as you know the tickets there are double as a regular theater that's one of my thoughts, I also think that if Transformers would have come out on the IMAX it would have made about $400 million.

  12. "tom, do note that there is a difference between theaters and screens. My local theater had Harry Potter on 5 screens versus Transformers' two."

i do know this, but in that case transformers is on a lot more than 4000 screens.. cause it's at 4050 theaters and multiple screns per theater.. while maybe not as many as HP5... the same numbers should be use.. saying transformers is on 4000 screens (incorrect, 4000 theaters) and then saying HP5 is on 9000 screens.. use the same values for each to make an accurate comparison..

  14. i know this is a TF blog but just need t get somethin off my chest bout a so called 'rival' film. how this has outgrossed transformers i never shall know!!

just got back from seeing HP5... what an absolute waste of time!

more questions posed than answered... and questions that won't be answered in HP6... which probably aint due til 2009 then my guess is HP7 in 2012.

as a stand alone film; not bad but as a chapter in a story/franchise... absolute garbage! no follow-on to HP4; may as well just be called harry potter... as the order of t phoenix play no part whatsoever!! may as well not even be in it! end fight scene (dumbledore/voldemort) quite good but that out and its god-awful (the main action/fight isn;t even harry/voldemort!!!)

why does it need mentioning that hagrid goes t pass a message on to the giants... they don't even get a mention after that! and the relevance of grawp (hagrid's giant brother) is absolutely un-required! yeah he's in it but definately doesn't need to be! money wasted on what could have improved past relevances such as sirius in the fireplace! in hp3 when sirius appears in t fireplace the charcoal forms his face and moves accordingly... which was good! here they just went dead cheapo and just super-imposed his face into the flames!

really wish i'd not seen it!! just even more eager to see transformers now... as i KNOW i aint gonna be let down by it... uk resident so got HP before transformers (?????!) but goin to special screenin this wknd so all shall be relieved come t wknd!!
