Transformers 1st Unit on Hiatus

Due to Shia LaBeouf's hand injury, 1st unit production is taking a 4 week break to allow the actor time to recover according to TFW2005. The actor crushed his left hand after a car accident on July 27th and will required time to recover from the surgery

2nd unit will continue to film scenes and interstitials the film needs. 1st unit is the primary unit that Bay directs from and works directly with the actors. Generally if you see a movie's lead on screen, chances are its 1st unit work.

I guess Bay's statement that the injury will not cause delays was before the schedule and what was left to shoot was given the once over. Considering Shia's injuries pretty much every scene he is probably had to be re-designed to cover extra use of stuntmen and to either hide his hand or work around the injury.

An example of the level of difficulty is the Barricade scene. Technically not much stunt work was needed but during that scene Shia used his hands constantly to push himself off cars, crawl back, slam against the police cruiser and so forth. With his current injury he simple would not have been able to film that. Instead the scene might be covered in a different way, more distance or close-up with a stuntman doing the bumping into the cars, crawling up the hood and charging from the lot. Problem with that though is it means more behind the head shots, less reaction shots and the like.

Now that is just once scene but carry that out through the entire movie (say something as simple as holding the All Spark) and you get the idea of how a hand injury can complicate things. There is a reason why even when films do the fake injuries (shot shoulder, hurt leg, etc) they tend to leave the hands alone. Considering that it is safe to assume the 2nd film will up the ante across the board, that also ups the complexity of trying to shoot around that hand regardless if the injury is added to the story or not.

Will this delay the movie release next June? I doubt it. Bay started work on the sequel pretty much immediately, working hand in hand with ILM and Digital Domain, giving the entire production a substantial head start. I think there is still about a 3-4 month buffer in the schedule before the threat of film release delay becomes a danger. In the meantime, best wishes to Shia and good luck in the recovery.

  1. You know what would really suck, if like Michael Bay got hurt or something. Transformers would never be the same...

  2. they could just bring down the importance of Sam and...heck...As much i hate to say this, make Megan Fox the lead of the movie. We don't need Sam. lol. He did his part. But theres the problem of BB being dedicated to Sam. *le sigh* Dif. bot take the spotlight this time? Wheeljack? Lambos?

But with Sam in college now, maybe that'll give BB more time to act independently from Sam. So maybe that will work after all.

Give Sam less screen time! lol.

I hate to say this cuz Sam was an interesting character, but I don't want Shia's recklessness (no matter who was really at fault, cuz Shia seems to SOMEHOW always be at the wrong place at the wrong time) to ruin the movie. I want action! Not gimp Sam slowing down the movie.

  3. No. Unfortunately there is no way to give Sam character less screen time. The only way as of now that Bay as is to use more stuntmen and change action sequences involving the character in order to film at any cost. If that's not possible or the results look bad to awful then the only other option is to delay the release date by 6 months and make the sequel a XMas release instead of a Summer one.

  4. I put my faith in them. It's Shia's safety first and foremost - he deserves some time to recover, and I have full confidence that they'll find a way to work around the injury, heck, even work it into the story if they need to. I actually think it would be interesting to focus more on Mikaela, or even the soldiers.

You're doing a wonderful job with the blog. Keep it up! :)

  5. but maybe their already focusing a bit more on mikaelas story.
and no offense megan fox can´t act... maybe she´ll get better with time if she wants too. but shes hot, thats what matters to them and fanboys.
the accident is unfortune, but since shia plays the lead character they´re shooting around him and shias safety is what matters, so hes recovering. he´lll be back in no time.

  6. lol, i agree about mikaela. I mean she even said herself that shes only there to look hot.

and thats all she is really good for.

  7. Well this break could be used to get some VA or VA casting done. I mean it be nice to get some lines in so they can put a teaser out.

  8. Out of curiosity did you questoin where TFW2005 got their info? Sounds like either BS or misunderstanding.

  9. Wow, you guys are faggots. You're worrying more about the movie, rather than Shia's safety? Some jackass female driver, I emphasize that, ran through a red light and t-boned him, that wasn't his fault. Would you guys rather them change the story and make the movie suck, than them change the date of the release? And you call yourselves fans? Lame.

  10. Megan Fox can't act ? I don't think so. There are some scenes where she is directed perfectly by Bay. Probably the best one is when she takes care of Bumblebee and decides to risk her life helping him to fight. There the character of Mikaela gets fully developed in a few seconds. Telling that she can't act it's pretty wrong. Bay was able to direct her perfectly, the character delivers and the sequel it's highly likely to see her role expanded. The corresponding character from the original anime series had a lot more screen time and if the small sized female Autobot is in the sequel then Mikaela is surely going to get more screen time.

  13. lol. I'm a fan of Transformers, not a fan of Shia.

I really don't care if the move the date. I just want the movie to be great. And with Shia getting in trouble here and there, I don't want them to soften up some scenes just cuz Shia can't dish it out anymore. I'm not saying its all his fault, but he is part to blame in every bad encounter he's run into as of now.

Theres a thing called looking both ways while driving. And if he was too drunk, or if he was too busy talking to Lucas, or just being reckless, he is still partly to blame.

And Megan? Her only USEFULNESS was during that scene with bumblebee. But she barely acted. Just looked backwards, and wobbled the driving wheel a little so it looked like she was driving. Wow, she should get an Oscar for that.

  14. JUST AS LONG AS THE DATE DOESN'T CHANGE (Which I doubt it will), OR THE MOVIE DOESN'T GET SCRAPPED.

I KNOW THE STORY WON'T CHANGE AND THEY WILL WRITE THIS IN AS A JOKE (Like in Spiderman 3), AND KEEP THE STORYLINE, PLOT, ACTION SEQUENCES THE SAME.

SO WHAT IF THEY CHANGE THE CAMERA ANGLES OR MAKE THEM FURTHER AWAY. THEN THAT MEANS THAT WE WILL GET TO SEE MORE OF THE TRANSFORMERS. None of this close-up bs where your wondering how the rest of a Transformers changes or what it is trying to do.

    Cheers.

  15. Come on, how can you say this wreck was at all his fault? If you're driving through a green light, and somebody runs a red light and hits you, would you say you're to blame? I don't think so. Even if he was talking to somebody, or being reckless, that doesn't apply to this.

  16. lol "even if". Ya keep talking. It nice to know that the not so bright Shia has not so bright fans too. ;)

I'm sure I mentioned this before, but it was a first or something, then I'd cut him more slack. But he seems to have a knack for getting in trouble. When you say sorry for one thing then get in trouble again, and then do it repeatedly, sympathies begin to run low.

Especially when they are all "while being drunk" situations. (in ref. to the last two occasions he got in trouble)

  17. Come on, he doesn't get in trouble, he gets in shanangins. Being arrested at a Walgreen's is not getting in trouble, getting fined for smoking we he shouldn't have, is not getting in trouble. Trouble is like, hitting another car because you were drunk, punching the cop, and then the cops fines cannabis in the car. That's trouble.
